"Most Americans don't set foot on greyhound busses or amtrak trains. Which is really kind of a pity; Amtrak isn't the cheapest or fastest way to get where you're going (generally), but if you can afford the time, I personally think the experience is worth it.

And yet, many of us keep getting back on those trains. It’s unfortunate that many of the cars are old and need to be replaced, but I personally would never fly again if Amtrak goes where I need to travel. Also, I have never before seen the Accessible Bedroom given to someone who didn’t need it. You noticed there’s room for a wheelchair? It must have been a sold-out train and it was the only sleeping room or roomette left. The roomettes and bedrooms upstairs have much better views, but I’m told that the lower deck is better for people who suffer from motion sickness. If you make reservations way ahead of time, you can reserve a regular bedroom, and they are all upstairs. Also, the further ahead of time you make reservations, the less expensive the fare is. Sign up for “Amtrak Rewards”; they occasionally have great specials, even BOGO fares. One other thing, let the attendant know of any problems. Really! On one trip, the roomette across from mine had a door problem that the conductor and attendant couldn’t fix. Meanwhile the passengers in the “Family Bedroom”, a much more spacious room, had already gotten off the train and that room was offered to the people in the roomette. They got a more comfortable sleeping room for the remainder of their trip, and this might have been the case for this passenger if he asked (and another room became vacant). For those who can’t, or don’t wish to climb stairs, the attendant will bring your food. Also, the attendant will make up your bed if you ask. I always tip waiters and attendants (although I suppose there might be a rare lazy employee who doesn’t deserve a tip. My sister had that happen one time.)

In the old Soviet trains, we didn't like the rooms next to the toilet. But these were rooms right next to the toilet, not in the toilet itself....

But that is an accessible room with a toilet meant to be easily usable by folks in wheelchairs and with other mobility issues. This is all without getting to final destination. So in simple terms, if you were to traverse from LAX to SF, the total time spent going from LAX and SF would be approximately hour 50 min to 2 hour 50 min. Now let's take HSR being built in California. That line will take 2 hr 40 min for passengers to traverse LA to SF. In simple terms, you aren't really losing any time when you are taking HSR or plane. Even more, a train is more fuel efficient. You cannot electrify airplanes. You can electrify trains. Instead of thousands of cars making countless journey, few train rides will do enough. That's simply too good of a return on fuel output. I think you fail to understand how big countries like China and Japan are. Japan from tip to tip is basically the length of Maine to Florida. Land mass doesn't fucking matter at all when trains, cars, and planes need to travel distances. Japan in length is pretty large. Now let's take a look at China which is the leader of HSR. That fucking country is almost big as US but they developed HSR and most Chinese would take HSR. Look i know you are a fucking fat American who likes their big car, big house, big yard, etc but that's unsustainable. If US keeps living like that, it will only drive itself into debt. Unless you are willing to pay for the entire cost of road you are using, utilities you are using, etc, then US will keep on diving itself into debt. There is a reason why many cities in US are tearing down highways. They destroy economic value in cities. Highways themselves disturb economic exchange. With more walkable cities being planned out and built, a lot of US cities are seeing more revenue growth in those districts. Suburbs are burden to US economies. We only have them because white people didn't want to live with black people anymore. Get your facts straight before spouting nonsense like God engineered the land itself deliberately for cars. @@alnabulsi313 The bathroom is because this as a wheelchair room. It is a private bathroom and due to the small size of the train, they can't put a wall in and have a wheelchair be able to get in.

If you’ve traveled enough places, you’ll see that North America is one of the few most accommodating places to the less privileged including handicapped and some of these modifications unfortunately have to be this way. If you visit most of the other countries places including well developed, their subways are all stairs so if you are on wheelchair? Too bad for you.

@@jfk5402 The thing is, is that Amtrak charges you a premium price, for a less than mediocre experience. Back when it was still a privately operated business, it was a really nice experience. It's government run these days, and they are inept at everthing they get their hands on. Comparing my experience on this train from 25 years ago to 2 years ago, is like night & day. The train cars are so outdated, rundown and overpriced for cabin rooms, that I personally will no longer use Amtrak. It's pretty bad, especially when comparing train travel here versus Japan's. No comparison.

You can ride coach for this trip for less than $300, If you join Amtrak's rewards programs and receive notifications, there can be considerable savings... I have had free trips...

@@JuanSanchezGuerra well it's true the Canadian is more of a vacation trip train now compared to what it used to be decades ago. Without even converting the cost into USD the price per hour on the via train is cheaper based on what solo solo payed.

Canadian railways was privatized in 1995 (or so). it makes huge differences. just look at around world and compare state owned to private owned, almost in any industry, all the same story.

Honestly coach isn’t even THAT bad. I’ve ridden it a few times and it’s not terribly loud. At least at night when it counts. And the seats are super comfortable
