In this video I complete the installation of my Solway panels. the installation is not plain sailing and a few things bring out my inner 'Victor Meldrew' but the end result and end finish is good. If you are interested in Solway panels, search: solway camper conversions

Thanks a lot for doing this. Convinced me to stick with ply for my L4H3 and keep solway as just an option for certain corners. Really hoped they’d be better than this. Didn’t occur to me that they just wouldn’t fit!

Didn't occur to me either until after I had spent £1k on them all. thing is, I want them to be brilliant and perfect and would then be worth every penny but unless they have changed in the last two years, they are just not!

Hi, not sure if I would have done , you still have the problem of the tops although cupboards will cover it and yes it was expensive . But each to there own, ay , I personally used 3mm ply and glued a lovely light grey leather effect and hid the screw fixings and it looks great and cost was in the region of £300 . But like I say Each to there own . On another note your vids are very well presented , so well done you 👍👍

Thank you very much for your comments. before buying the Solway panels I was too considering a 3mm ply with a foam layer glued and then a leather or leatherette covering over that. I have seen this on coach built vans both on walls and ceilings, but wifey wanted the Solway. I am happy with the finish now and I'm glad I went for it albeit a few more grey hairs now sprouted from fitting them. On the video front, I still don't like the sound of my own voice but amazing what you can turn out with your sons GoPro!

I love your videos and what ever you do always turns out nice. I'm in Australia and currently working on a new 2021 Sprinter LWB. The cost of the van alone is more than what our first new home was in 1986 therefore I feel it would be sacrilege to skimp out on anything. If you think I'm crazy for paying so much then try buying a 10 year old secondhand van (with 200,000km) less than it's original new price? It's near impossible. Our sprinter came with inner rear door trims on the the bottom half only but not the top half. I just paid $500 dollars (AU) for the 2 top halves so I can have matching top and bottom door trims. I reckon your trims look great and give your van a more professional finish. We (my wife and myself) can't wait for your finished van tour. Thank you for valued instructional videos for they are very helpful.

I feel your pain on that, a 2018 Citroen is selling in the UK for as much if not more than a new one as new are like rocking horse droppings. I wanted a brand new one but could not source one without a 12 month wait list so went for the 2018 you see in the videos. go brand new every time of the pocket will allow... thanks for watching.

It is so difficult. i love them now fitted by Jesus Christ they were hard work to fit. even Gadget John had to admit to lots of fettling, and he is everyone's 'golden boy' right now so probably did not pay much for them so is obliged to be nice about them. The irony is I would buy them again for the next van as I do like the finish they give. If Solway will sell them to me anyway :-)

Great informative video. I’ve been looking at these panels for a L4 H2, so may not be subjected to all the issues you’ve discovered. That offside panel at the window looks a nightmare, wonder what Solway do as some of their builds have windows at that location! 🤔 I’ll need to sit down and watch your footage in build order. I’ve done a L1H1 previously but the larger van will bring its own challenges. Look forward to seeing your progressive footage 👍

You are correct the panels didn’t align on my van. However there is something else you need to be concerned about. I fitted my panels back in 2019 and I have one rear lower door panel that’s gone from beige to a real yellow/beige, it’s very noticeable hope this doesn’t happen to yours but pay attention I have a feeling they may discolour over time. There is a solution but it’s too detailed to write here. Off topic but your video on Air Suspension, I noted your Sumo Spring tip, I ordered them, they arrive tomorrow.

Are you sure it's not upside down? They look better than panels but would be better if they had a more precise fit. Better joints would improve the look as well.

Firstly, I would definitely buy individual panels and not the kit as some are completely hidden so not needed for my build, I would not bother with the wheel arch covers second time around, but I would use them again for the other areas as they look great once fitted. great to me anyway.....

I only got to 4.14. 6mm ply is good for walls in a camper van. Because there's a slight curve, you screw to horizontal ribs, and you'll find its pretty solid. Screws are hidden for the most part by cupboards, furniture, and fittings. It's a flattish surface and looks neat. You can paint or carpet how you like. I'm sorry, but you fitted two 25mm battans, losing 50mm width is bonkers. Sorry, it needs to be said.

I found it quite apt that you use descriptive terms such as "crap" and "rubbish". 😕Fortunately I bought only corner pieces, wheel arch and thresh hold, thank god I didn't go for a full set. All panels required serious re-work and mods to make them fit. The general standard of quality (for want of a better word) reminds me of something out of the former GDR / communist block. With benefit of hindsight and experience I would have opted for ply lining with 4-way stretch carpet and give this crummy stuff a very wide berth,

just tried my solway panels against my walls in my l4h2 thinking they would fit better than yours, but no they dont :( seems like i have to go the wood baton way also like you done, its a bit heartbreaking, i paid nearly £1600 for mine and they said they had been redone to better standards but they are just the same as yours not a very good fit at all :(
@wiltshirecustomcamper7203
@wiltshirecustomcamper7203 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, jimmy from Solway was quite shitty about it on a comment i deleted. i agree that for the money they should fit better, however, like i say in my videos i like the final finish so worth the effort to make them fit. he stated I was fitting mine too low so I can only imagine that the bottom 'shaped' part does not fit over the horizontal rib but actually above it in some way. I think they should really make some fitment videos and can only think that they dont as it would put people off. If I was doing this again I would make the top fit correctly without the batten and then play around with the bottom afterwards, also try starting at the panel behind the sliding door and work backwards to get a flavour for the height according to Solway and see how you get on. hope that helps and good luck!

@@wiltshirecustomcamper7203 thank you i will try working that way back, i do like them i think it gives the finish a professional look, when i seen their vans they looked perfect because i went and collected my panels from them and they showed me around and let me look at their conversions, they obviously have a trick to fit them perfectly what we dont know about haha, if i do it like he says then i dont see why they shaped the bottom part as if it was meant to fit the bottom bar ?

My experience to date with these panels is that the are not a particularly good fit. First thing, the window panels are not really suitable for single glazed van windows despite being told that they would work. That should be re phrased, work after a battle and cutting half of them/launching the rest in the bin. I gave up with the rear door panels and just cut the tops off and carpeted the rest of the doors. I'm doing the same with the side load door. Don't but the full set, just buy the difficult shapes such as top rear , above the side load door and the bulkhead/overhead cab storage these rest are so out that it takes just as long as using plywood but at twice the cost. 6/10. Damn shame.
