Tonight we're creating a very simple scenic base, the kind that just serves as a "decorated display stand" for our model. No storytelling, no real context, just a piece of groundwork for those situations when you don't want to put your model on a plain wooden base or on your shelf.
And I'm going to learn quite a few things in the process, which I'll try to implement in the next piece of terrain!

So this experience led me to purchasing the FAQ Dioramas book from AK, because I felt like I'm overcomplicating even the most basic things which in turn kept distracting me from important stuff like composition etc. Well, after reading a few chapters I can say pretty much everything can be done in a more straightforward way, so I hope the next vignette will look much better!

Painting the diorama before you add all the foliage can give you a nice map of what to do next, especially for puddles and tufts of grass.

It’s technically pattern-welded steel, not Damascus steel. I’m not going to tell you to call it pattern-welded because i understand that it makes it seem way cooler if you call it Damascus steel, but there is a big difference between real Damascus steel which they can no longer make and pattern-welded steel which is just forge-welding a billet of different steels to give you a certain look. The bands in Damascus steel consist of carbon nanotubes and cemenite nanowires which are part of it not the reason why Damascus steel was so strong. Conversely the bands in pattern-welded steel are purely cosmetic. At the end of the day idc what you call it as long as you know what the difference is :)

I do model railroading and I bought a video where they show you how to process dry leaves. First, when the leaves are in the blender, add water, like half full. Then dump your leaves into an old shirt and squeeze out the water. Then place the damp clump of leaves on a cooking sheet, spread the leaves out and bake for several minutes until the leaves are dry. Finally, use a sifter like a wire mesh strainer, and sift out the final “dry leaf” texture. It will be in a perfectly small scale for your dioramas :)

People always come back with "i can't do this!!" But you can. Everyone was new to the hobby at one time. Patience, practice, and layers. Martin's way of weathering has reinforced how i do things. And also made me do other things i didn't think about. You young guys just getting started, don't be overwhelmed and don't think you cant do these things. All these great modelers have certain things in common, wanting to get better, patience and layers, using references, and not afraid to make mistakes. Only way to get better is to get out there and start building and painting and weathering.

Honestly, that grass looks like the texture you get from course grass on ground that has poor drainage. It looks very convincing as a country road rather than the manicured grass that looks like a moorland idyll with a tank glued to it. It was definitely not a disaster.

Here’s a technique I’ve learned from another modern KZfaq you might have heard of called Andy’s Hobby Headquarters. Anyway the technique is: have a space pair of rubber tracks so you can press it down into the mold (and I believe you let it dry with the tracks in there) and than your peel the rubber tracks off and it leaves a really nice track impression

Your thumbnail made me think that you should make an entire diorama in black and white as if it were a photograph in 3d. I've never seen it done before and I think it could have a great effect. Love the vids, keep it up!

You should do an amphibious tank! That would be really interesting to see how you would texture water damage/weathering. Also another suggestion, I would love to see you work on an Object 279! I know its a prototype but it still would be really cool!

I have one Object 279 fully built up and customized with sheet metal cladding, PE, metal tracks and everything... all that's left is to paint it!

When applying static grass I often found you can just pinch a teeny tiny bit between thumb and forefinger, roll it back and forth a little in your hand to get the strands facing all the same way. Dab the short end of your bundle into the glue on the ground a few times, depositing pinches of grass as you go. Then, so it looks more natural, you can use some small scissors and trim the shape. It takes a little while but you can get into a rythem and cover a whole field that way.

What I used to do with grass before I got a good static grass applicator was using a vacuum cleaner to make the static grass stand upright more. The first applicator I has didn't have enough strength to make the fibres stand up well enough but the vacuum cleaner worked quite well..as long as you don't get it to close.

If you haven't seen him already, I really recommend Luke Towan if you need tips for doing dioramas or for using things like hot wire cutters and static grass applicators. Would be really cool to see you do a bigger chunk of the area around the tank! Also this looks amazing Uncle, you gotta stop being so hard on yourself man!

Tip from railway modelling - you can layer different lengths of static grass by fixing each layer with hairspray - it's not just for chipping....!!

Was thinking about it, and one thing you could do to make it pop a bit more is to lengthen your bases a bit and have the tank further back. Do not center your tank. It is the same in photography, rarely in a good photo of a vehicle is the subject in the center, if you have a gap in front of your main subject it gives it the feeling of moving forward or distance. Another 2 inches on that base would have made a difference.

Texturing the styrene before cutting is a lot more easier. And with razor saw or metal brush, a final pass with Scotch brite will remove most bits which didn't come off. Static grass applicator is a must. Woodland Scenics has the heavy duty Static King, but also a cheap plastic can, which seems to work for small project. The transformer fly swatter are also good for small grass. I use up to 12 mm grass, and for that the Static King is a lot more successful.

Use a saw or a bread knife for cutting insulation foam 👍.......also use PVA glue and water to spread your air dry clay around 👍

Northwest Shortline is a very well known model train part company over here in the US. That tool is most likely designed for cutting brass sheets or for cutting model track rails.
