Love your videos! And, I'm so glad you use the panning shot from The Martian as your go-to judder test; it's one of my favorite films and I always notice the terrible motion that my cheap TV produces in that scene. Hoping to go QD-OLED in early 2023 once the next gen TVs are announced and they start discounting this year's sets to move them along.

Great review! Was the ASBL thing in the beginning with the logo detection on S95B set to low, high, or off I didn't catch if you made that part clear or not. Also quick question on the S95B vs A95K when you use custom vs filmmaker are daytime scenes similar looking? At times it feels like certain movies or shows in HDR on the S95B using FMM look much darker with daytime scenes than my A80J on custom, is this related to what you mentioned about the 4,000 nit container in your S95B review.

@Tech with KG: It was off in the user menu on the Samsung S95B. Yes, possibly. The Samsung S95B tonemaps according to Max Mastering Display Luminance metadata, whereas the Sony A80J just ignores that metadata and tonemaps based on real-time scene analysis.

@TechWithKG 2 жыл бұрын
@@hdtvtest @HDTVTest Thank you for your response Vincent that is really impressive on the A95K's part, seeing as one of people's biggest complaints was the ASBL dimming in gaming and sports, this looks to be much improved with the A95K from what your showing thats great news. Also thanks for explaining the tone mapping differences more this makes sense now why Filmmaker Mode on new Dr Strange looks impactful and bright even in daytime scenes but for certain Netflix shows like Stranger Things Season 4 daytime scenes look kind of dull while darker scenes look fine. In circumstances like this where you are getting a darker presentation from the daytime scenes would you ever suggest using movie mode instead & would movie mode act more like the A80J's method? PS: Heres an idea for a video, I think you doing a breakdown for the way tone mapping algorithms work from Sony, LG, & Samsung would make for an excellent video, because there is a lot of confusion from viewers to how this works differently with different TV manufactures.

@@TechWithKG only wanted to reconfirm on calibrated A80J looks 4th Season of Stranger things in Dolby Vision Dark (calibrated too) very impactfull and stunning in daylight scenes too. Great HDR presentation, one of the best I saw on A80J across shows & movies. All in all I cannot help it makes sense to buy SONY A95K or another 2023 or later Sony or other brand QD OLED as Samsung in case movie watching is priority, Sony and other brands looks in many areas of approach more mature & just working (except of gaming :) for sure) . Near black uniformity & some scenes HDR impact of QD Oled, no chrominance overshoot , no white pixel dillusion effect due higher colour peak brightness as well with of angle no tinting is non issue are very strong advantages of QD Oled. Wider colour gamut etc. QD Oled is huge step up.

LG G2 OLED can't even match A90J or A80J from last year
@AFlyingCookieLOL
@AFlyingCookieLOL 2 жыл бұрын
@@RobertK1993 Have 4 different OLEDs, all good performance. A80J and A90J is definitely a step up with the A80J having most of the performance of the A90J with the differences mostly in the highlights which does improve the overall image. It is the overall implementation that matters, not just the panel. The C1 is nice, but certainly not overall or standalone, the G2 does not include a stand so that might be a turn off while the A80J overall is better performer if both are in their suited environment, a dark room. The G2 seems to perform better in HDR and does have some pink tint with a viewing angle slightly better than the a80J which doesn't matter if you are always directly infront of the screen. Sony A80J after calibration is however better with the G2 having some over saturation on some colors. White balance on the A80J is superb :)

I’m glad you had a good experience however my experience was terrible 😞 my A90J has pretty bad “grid” effect in very bright white scenes. Sony customer service asked for a picture but it’s extremely difficult to get a picture off you can only really see it with you’re eyes. Anyway they eventually said there is nothing they can do as it’s part of the panel manufacturing process and they wouldn’t process a swap or return absolutely gutted has definitely soured my taste for Sony after this especially the money I spent on this set overall not a good experience.

It is great to see SONY has finally improved their auto dimming algorithm so much for this year! Last year’s A90J was an overall amazing TV except for the ASBL which kicks in when you have static element in the screen for just around 2 mins. That was a dealbreaker for most gamers, but this year WOW! The A95K won’t get any dimmer after 10 mins displaying of static element as far as I saw from this review, this is enough for most games I think.

@@zongyusu no I think the opposite, gaming is way more prone to burn in than watching TV or movies. So though they may have improved it some, it could still be too much. My cx didn't dim but just barely in hdr games with hud elements for the first year. I eventually had to pick a high APL game and switch it from high to off to see the difference in dimming. It was so little I didn't mind it at all, this is on high setting to. Right around a year of owning it, an update came out and the TV started dimming in hdr games by 50% or more I think. It would only take a few minutes and it was terrible. Dark games became unplayable. I would havevto bring up the TV menu to reset it every 5 minutes. I finally got the service remote and turned all that off.

@ledooni
@ledooni 2 жыл бұрын
Monitor use limited to gaming and 4K resolution and higher. For lower resolutions or when using it for productivity as well the triangular subpixel array is just too distracting to make the upgrades in other aspects worthwhile for PC use. Maybe they figure out a way to make those displays work with a traditional RGB subpixel layout. That would make QD-OLED the sole winner and make WRGB-OLED mid-tier unless LG can improve it very significantly as well.

@@robertlipka9541 traditionally most modern panels have their subpixels arranged as red, green and blue (rgb) "stripes" they are side by side to each other qd oleds change this to be a slightly larger green subpixel on top and the red and blue on the bottom, hence the triangular layout. This can introduce some issues with high contrast elements such as text and looks like it has chromatic aberration or de coloration/fuzziness on the edges, you can check Vincent's video on the issues with the Alienware qd oled monitor for more details or also hardware unboxed review on the qd oled Alienware monitor as well, it is best if you have a visual on it. @@TaimatCR I've been using an AW3423DW as my primary, day to day work and play monitor for almost 4 months now. The sub pixel arrangement is absolutely not an issue unless you part yourself so close to the display that you have to turn your head to see things on the sides of the panel. Many reviewers have noted the same thing. At normal viewing distances, it's just not an issue. Some may indeed have an issue with the 'low' PPI, but that's nothing inherent to this panel and it doesn't look obviously worse pixel density wise from proper viewing distances than my 1440p, 27 inch IPS panel.

Vincent, I have a question about your recommended TML and FFTML HDR settings for PS5/Xbox. I think your advice to have Max Tone Mapped Luminance be the same value as Max Full Frame Tone Mapped Luminance may be limiting the maximum contrast for users, especially for small specular highlights. The "For Better HDR Gaming" PDF says the same thing, that it is usually not the same value with the small window obviously being brighter. I know every manufacturer uses different tone mapping methods, but for my Samsung, setting the MTML to the max setting 10,000 nits and the Full Frame to 1,000 nits on both consoles creates a much better HDR highlight than if both were set to 1,000. The set knows 1,000 is the overall full frame limit, but my LED set can push up to 1,500 nits in small, short windows and increasing the setting gives me that without losing highlight detail. What do you think?

I'm also curious about this. But it depends on the use case, for OLEDs, it's difficult to set a realistic FFTML because most panels are at 150 nits.. I think even on an LG, with best support for HGIG, the clipping point would be the same between FFTML and TML. I think Keep It Classy Tech has shown that it is the same for Sony OLEDS (it clips at 1000 nits I think). Now for LED TVs, I agree, and if you disable Dynamic Tone Mapping, the clipping point are realistic according to the actual 100% and 10% windows brightness of the TV, again on SONY LEDs. It would be nice if someone with an X90J or X95J could try this...In any case, most games don't support HGIG anyway so you would need to have tone mapping on.

That dimming part in the beginning. The ASBL I think it's called is the reason I returned my S95B because I use my TV as a PC monitor and it was dimming a crazy huge amount after a while in KZfaq comment section and forums etc. I use dark web pages on everything, but since it's "static" according to the algorithm and that happens even if you scroll the comment section. It begins to dim. So dim after a while you can barely read the comment. So if I made a comment like this one. When hitting "comment" and posting it. BOOM the brightness come back because the page is updated and reset. It was jarring AF and I can't deal with that crap. OLEDs have that problem. But seemingly Sony has minimal amount of it. That means I might actually get A95L next year instead. Could be slightly brighter and still not have the ASBL as bad as S95B and W-OLED.

Hi Vincent. Love your reviews! I'm in the market for a new OLED panel. I own a Sony A1E and I discovered after I connected an AppleTV that the A1E doesn't seem to talk to the AppleTV correctly. Colors are less saturated and HDR content from assorted apps on AppleTV are neither as contrasty or as saturated as the content that I view through the same Android (versions of the) apps that are native to the Sony panel. I chalk this up to the AppleTV being newer tech than the A1E and so the A1E just doesn't know how to properly decode HDR10 media. I've seen others complain about this issue. Do you know if the A95K solves this problem - either by being able to interface with the AppleTV hardware properly now, or because the AppleTV app is (supposedly) built into the Android interface?

If I watch a news channel with a big station logo and ticker, will ASBL kick in as well, or does the A95K maintain its brightness?
@marcuscole8796
@marcuscole8796 2 жыл бұрын
ASBL always kicks in when there is no noticeable change in APL (avg. picture brightness) on screen. The tv then "thinks" the video/movie is paused and/or in stand-by ... and starts to dim the entire screen. Logos or tickers are not driving this behaviour ... it mostly appears with very dark scenes like in some eposides of "GoT"s last season, "Haunting of Hill House", "Sabrina", etc.
@michaelchristensen9277
@michaelchristensen9277 2 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the reply Marcus. I had an A1E awhile back that dimmed the screen when I would watch CNN, MSNBC, etc. I thought this was ASBL, and it was terrible! Making this a sticking point on whether I decide to try another OLED. From your comments, it seems Sony has refined their ASBL algorithm. Fingers crossed.
@marcuscole8796
@marcuscole8796 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelchristensen9277 My pleasure ... for the A1E you need to know this was Sony's very first OLED tv which made sony being somewhat anxious about getting burn in at that time. Hence they drove the panel much dimmer than LG did with the C7 (also a 2017 OLED tv) and for ABL they decided to have it much more aggressive. In fact the 2017 panels were noticeably more prone to burn in than the 2018 and later models/panels ... so their being cautious wasn't without reason, although they overdid it a bit when looking at the C7 in comparison ;-) For some years now "burn in" is almost a "no issue" for many reasons/"made changes" throughout the past 5 years. You are right, it is also possible to get ASBL to kick in also with news channels or similar content on screen ... the only driver for ASBL getting activated is "not enough brightness changes on screen" ... as said this almost happens with every "long dark scenes" movie or show ... but it is also possible that some news channel do not have enough changes in brightness over time ... so, yes ... the tv might "think" the news channel is "paused" resulting in it starts dimming the screen. I got the same impression, the Sony A95K seems to have a very relaxed ASBL implemented ... probably thanks to the QD-OLED panel in combination with the installed heatspreader. BUT ... e.g. last years Sonys like the A80J and A90J are quite well known for having a sometimes annoying ASBL ... what's even worse: other than with LG OLED tvs you can't deactivate ASBL on these Sony tvs (Sony simply doesn't allow it). So, if you are afraid of getting annoying contact with ASBL threough kicking in on your next tv: either go with the A95K which seems to have a very "relaxed" implementation ... or ... you go for any LG OLED tv, because for LG tvs you can easily buy a service remote for $10 (e.g. on Amazon) and switch off ASBL entirely in the service menu. As I understood from Vincent also the S95B allows deactivating of it's ASBL ... but I would expect it is not as easy (as on LG tvs) to 1. enter the service menu and 2. find and deactivate ASBL then. The reason is: up til now among all other OEMS only LG allowed this and other (even very critical) changes in the service menu ... and also made it very easy to enter the service menu for regular customers. Samsung now seems to be the first other OEM allowing this too.
@michaelchristensen9277
@michaelchristensen9277 2 жыл бұрын
I guess we’ll have to test it ourselves and see if ASBL is tolerable with our viewing habits. As you said, it’s too bad Sony doesn’t allow the user to disable it in any way. But Vincent’s stop sign clip is encouraging. Unfortunately, I’m totally anal retentive with motion integrity, and cannot stomach the Korean brand’s motion processing (i.e. Samsung & LG). So for me, it’s Sony or bust. I’m also keen to Panasonic’s processing, but as an American, I’m S.O.L. on their availability. I’m also coming from a Z9D, which for my money, is the best 65” LED ever made, and is better at mitigating motion stutter over OLED. Tough choices for deciding whether to upgrade!
@marcuscole8796
@marcuscole8796 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelchristensen9277 I just can share my experience with watching "Game of Thrones" season 8 recently ... ASBL was extremely annoying for 3 episodes ... I had to permanently hit the "settings" button twice ... which brought the visibility back but only lasted for about 20 or 30 seconds ... then the whole process started again. It was so annoying I stopped watching the show, got an LG service remote and deactivated ASBL. The difference was "day and night" and I could continue watching the show without any further interruption. Yes, the A95K seems to not have this issue (maybe) ... but regarding picture processing (motion as well) especially the LG G2 improved massively compared to last years G1 (new processor, heat spreader, latest "EX" panel). To get the full picture and being more sure on which tv to place your bet, I'd recommend to view Vincents review and/or visit AVforums homepage and read Phil Hinton's review re the G2 (some important measurements you may also get from Rtings G2 review). As of Phil's review the G2 this year surpasses the A90J (also re video processing) ... and the A95K will get the identical processor as the A90J ... so, no improvements here vs last year. If Sony will still be the no.1 choice afterwards ... that's fine as there is not so much ASBL critical content out there ... but if you watch some of these and the A95K starts dimming ... you will not be pleased for sure and there will be nothing you can do about it ... as I said: it was unbearable for me as the scenes were already extremely dim and having them dimmed further just made them almost disappear entirely.

Cool. Not getting a new TV soon (maybe in the next couple of years), but it's exciting to see these new technologies. That does bring me to an off-topic question: I know Vincent has said in some of his videos that Dolby Vision is better in some games while HDR is better in others, but would you say it's better to keep DV on or keep it off? I know what both do (although not exactly what DV is doing gaming side for non-native titles), but I'm not sure if I should just turn DV off. I still use a TCL R617 from 2018 and when doing HDR on PS5 and Xbox Series X, it will clip at around 4800/5000 nits by tone-mapping, while on Xbox it will clip at around 800 - 1000 in DV, but it also in some games will make colors like blue and red oversaturated in the shadows. Just curious if I should clip up to these insane numbers by tone map with HDR, or make use of Dolby Vision. Since it's an older TV, I cannot make use of HGIG or DTM (although I wouldn't want to use DTM anyways). Edit - Nevermind. I have used DV since it was available, but I believe it's worse, at least on my TV. I turned it off and will keep it off. It may allow for a bit more detail in the brightest highlights (not sure), but the possible crushing of blacks and yet oversaturation of blues and reds in some shadows just look less accurate.

@@bojangbg I fully understand your point of view ... Panasonic tvs are always the most accurate and "cinematic" tvs due to the intensive link Panasonic has to the movie industry and their workflow ... they also respect creators intent the most of all OEMs. Sony is close to it, but I do not like their tone mapping approach (maintaining EOTF by sacrificing bright picture elements) ... and they are using somewhat too much post processing for my taste ... including artificially elevating dark details. Sony produces some of the very best projectors out there (if not the best) which deserves all respect ... but regarding tvs I see them just at the same level with LG ... and even below LG regarding their handling of Dolby Vision implementation ... since 2017 it is just a desaster (they forced Dolby Labs. to introduce the horrible "Low Latency" version of DV) and it took them until 2021 to get DV implemented correctly for the first time. Their UHD-players are no different ... up til now they do not have a HDR/DV detection ... for every single movie you have to decide and manually switch DV on or off ... which is annoying and pathetic in 2022. Besides all that I only wanted to point out a tv is not a monitor (only) ... it's a much more complex product and carries a lot of different properties with different importance depending on the usecase ! Picture quality is the most important property ofc, but as this is a complex and versatile AV entertainment product ... there is much more to it.

Hello Vincent, so for the ps5 hdr calibration I have to go 15 clicks from the lowest up in the first 2 images and as dark as possible on the third image and everything with gradation preferred on? And should I disable VRR for a lower input lag and leave the 120hz mode on for fast shooter games for the lowest input lag possible?

Is there a specific wall mount you guys recommend for this TV? It's not ready for purchase in the UK yet but I want to have everything ready! :D

Any 3rd party wall mount bracket using the VESA mount will do the job. As well you can get rid of the 3 degree tilt-back and the missing height for a soundbar by using a 3rd party table top stand.

Looks like I have to decide between a 65" Sony QD OLEd or a 77" G2 OLED.

I was having that same problem, and I did not want to get a LG G2 but I did and its worth it for the simple fact its a bigger screen. Same price and it will come with 5yr panel warranty. I still think my A90j is better but I wanted a bigger screen and the a95k being the better tv but not for 65inch unless you have a small room for it. Trust me the bigger size is worth it. But next year ill be back with sony if they have a bigger size for QD oled.

Same boat. I'm coming from a 55" so the size increase will be significant for either. I'm really big on the color white though and haven't liked woled whites anytime ive seen them

@@jayhovah5621 Yeah, WOLED white is more like a light gray. I think I need to see them side by side to make up my mind.

I have a question regarding PS5 HDR settings. When playing HGIG compliant games, will the PS5 send the maximum luminance levels to the TV based on the settings and the TV will use this maximum as a baseline for its tone mapping? How does it work for non HGIG compliant games and how do ingame settings impact this? Thanks
@TheEdmaster87
@TheEdmaster87 Жыл бұрын
Non hgig supported games will simply ignore ps5 system hdr calibration, then its up to the game to have hdr sliders to adjust for brightness level. If the game supports hdr and does not have hgig it will usually stikk work with hgig, but the picture and highlights might look dimmer. So not all games look amazing, actually some games look better in SDR.

I almost pulled the trigger on the s95b and was waiting for this review. So glad I was patient, I like the screen uniformity and cleaner look of the Sony. At the start where the cars are passing, the letters on the Sony truck look less blurry in motion, seems the Sony is definitely handling motion better with less artifacts. The brightness difference is not great enough and the build quality seems better on the a95k as well. Can’t wait to pick this up

So you want grey blacks
@michaelnight9162
@michaelnight9162 2 жыл бұрын
@@ArtVandelayOfficial the slight elevation in blacks is no where near as jarring as the aggressive ABL and motion artifacts s95 in my opinion. The Sony also win on gradation which is very important to me. If you run a lot of non 4K content the Sony is up scaling better. Both TVs can’t be beat in picture quality but the complaints about the s95 build quality is a concern

@@ArtVandelayOfficial as mentioned, you have to get really close to the screen to notice this. The problems I have with the s95 is I would notice it’s shortcomings at a comfortable viewing distance. The build quality is a concern my primary concern. So many reports of burn in and screen bending already. The Sony is more consistent and wins in the area that matters to me. I suspect Samsung will come harder with next year’s model
