11 жыл бұрын

The Southwest Airlines Maintenance and Engineering (M&E) operation runs on a 24-hour schedule. Every few days, the overnight M&E Employees undertake the exciting task of changing an engine. Southwest's engine changes take place at the Maintenance Hangars at DAL, HOU, PHX, MDW, and ATL. However, AMTs must occasionally travel to other Southwest locations to perform onsite engine changes as well. During an engine change, the engine is removed entirely from the aircraft and replaced with another engine. The process can take as few as four and as many as seven hours to complete. Teamwork is crucial; everyone has a job. Like most tasks that AMTs perform, an engine change is an extremely controlled procedure that requires not only skill, but a strict compliance with complex federal regulation. In the past year alone, Southwest AMTs performed 154 engine changes-excluding aircraft retirements.

Almost all airline maintenance runs 24/7 365. There are no weekends or holidays, if it is your day to work you work unless you are taking vacation, personal time, or a sick day. When you first start you will normally work third shift for a LONG time before you are able to get off it.

And if it takes you 14 years to get to dayshift and you get laidoff two years later,..you get to go to another company and start back on Midnights all over again!!

Glenn, A couple of responses. Absolutely this video is edited. But on your first comment, about raising the engine before lowering it. It is not out of order. After attaching the chains they raise it a few inches before moving it out. On the different engine, we shot two nights so we could get all of the shots we needed. Again not trying to mislead, or cheat on the editing just trying to capture everything. We did take one liberty editing that you haven't caught yet. see if you can find it.

As a lifelong Fresno resident, I can tell you there's a metro area of over a million people that's is super excited to finally have Southwest coming in in April after decades of wanting them! Next I hope the add more cities as covid let's up. Denver and Vegas are great but we'd love new cities we don't have at all yet!

I've delivered oil and aircraft parts to different airlines at different airports that were in for maintenance. Sometimes I would get escorted onto the tarmac to deliver to the plane, specifically for wheels with the tires mounted already go. The tires are huge. Even the front tire for an MD-11 is huge. Delivered to JFK airport for that one.

Once the airplane is taken outside is the engine test run and if so for how long and at what power setting? In the Air Force we used to test run jet engines after a replacement for about a half hour. Also the afterburner had to be lit and left on for about 2 minutes.

Hey are u not working right now? I`m asking because I`m 46 and planning on going back to school for aircraft maintenance here in Illinois but I hear alot of things from the older mechanics to study something else. What do u think? I`d like to work in line maintenance. I know it wont be right away to get that position though. I`m worried after I graduate because of my age and being a rookie that no one will hire me. Also I heard from someone else that Chicago isnt a desirable place to work in because of the bad weather and being so expensive to live here that not too many AMT`s want to come here, is that true? It`s good for me because I live in chicago and if the airlines are having trouble getting techs I might end up getting hired and getting a line maintenance position after all.

I'm a 30 year AMT, I wouldn't recommend now getting into the airline industry what-so-ever. It used to be a good job, not anymore. Airlines like SWA want to outsource more AMT jobs overseas or 3rd party hack shops. They treat AMTs like a cost they don't want to pay anymore, witness the nearly 6 years SWA has slow walked a contract for AMT's at SWA. They also harass and threaten those that find maintenance discrepancies. Go into diesel work, they can't fly them to south america or china. At an airline, you'll be working mids, weekends, and holidays until you retire. Just my 2 cents from the inside.
@3John-Bishop
@3John-Bishop 5 жыл бұрын
You can always find work in contract maintenance for about half the top pay at SWA. Not steady though and can be laid off when work is slow. Willing to move?

Engines are limited by hours on wing, or if the periodic boroscope of the compressors, turbine, or hot sections show damage (like FOD, erosion, or cracks in the combustion can), or high oil consumption, lots of reasons they are pulled. SWA has power-by-the-hour, meaning they outsource engine overhaul, no in house engine overhaul.

@dieseltu1035
@dieseltu1035 7 ай бұрын
If nothing goes wrong and an experienced crew , 8 hours is lucky. Normally it should be two turns if you need some extra engine seals or something. Overnight is the norm. Or the pylon has damage or something bad like corrosion , it could sit around for a couple days or a week or longer . It really depends on a lot of factors . But overnight is what they want .
