Swanson makes thirteen different speed squares from seven inch to twelve inch sizes. From basic aluminum to composite plastic. Composite is great when working with vinyl siding etc. won't mark vinyl like aluminum will. One 12" model comes with an additional gauge for stair layout. A magnetic model is great for steel stud work /welding work. A fully metric square is also available. Also a folding composite model that doubles as a bevel. One even comes with a built in bubble level. All come with the "Little Blue Book" manual. I am not affiliated with Swanson... just wanted to add a little more info. Great vid as always Shannon. Thanks for sharing. Good health and long life to you and yours.

40 years ago I saw a speed square at the store .I told my wife if I had one and could learn to use it I could make some money. I purchase it and studied the book. Then I hired a framing carpenter to teach me carpentry as we built a building that I contracted to build for a client. After that we worked together for a year or two until I had learned to frame. That was 40 years ago and I have been in the remodeling business all this time thanks in large part to learning to use that tool.

You can also a speed square to make long rafter cut. You put the speed square at 90° , then mark your pitch, ex 5/12. Then rotated your square to your mark and connect your pivot and 5/12 mark and you will have your long 5/12 layer out to cut

So how do you decide what pitch you make on a roof when you are doing a new start. I see that the run and overhang can change, and I hear the purpose of the roof and type of materials that you have to work from would change the pitch. Perhaps you can suggest a roof overview from on-line medium to memorize a few different roof types, but between simple dimensional and for making buildings from raw or scratch. I just started watching your shed series with the roofing episode and these questions popped-up. I got attacked again in the dreams this morning but it seemed to start off the youtube yesterday off the Chico crypto notification with the Chinese front image and then within the content again off the Chinese police image last evening. Almost every day I am here on this contract at Parexel Baltimore Maryland including something projecting off of Larry(LES) today trying to steal my financial information, but (3) others in this dorm B trying to steal from me and projecting-in my thoughts at least (3) from other dorms projecting in and (3) staff this morning near wakeup all projecting-in with ill intent. Psy and dream warfare which when attached to someone being attacked and killed in the dream you struggle to wake-up and I am just not myself. Year after year of this foreign Infiltration hidden destruction murder tactics and no one to know it is occurring just persons with declining functionality while all these foreign social types keep pushing their dumbed-down agenda and all the True People and those of us struggling to be true being killed both in functional ability but in my case many times assaulted and poisoned by different factions. That's why the partially dumb questions that I would otherwise be more able to research myself. I rely more on audio-visual because when I am trying to do other things then I can either watch or just listen. But if it's in print on the internet that is also good so I can expose myself to other than current conventions toxic housing, but given the physical damage and slower thinking and less of my own visualization I need to do modified techniques for Real Joinery to expedite the work load while still producing something that resembles our Ancestors Abilities and not being forced to be dependent on buying everything. I need insight regarding this whole financial crisis fabrication if you have someone who can suggest a low budget portfolio for a poor layman including metals and krypto-currency both as stocks and tokens to ride out this reset. We are paid on this usbank debit card but I wasn't able to get access to anything on the 23rd before coming in-house and I see on the internet two plus months of problems regarding this bank in this current crisis that like unemployment their is no oversight body to step in and squeeze them to get our money. As it stands now I will be doing this contract getting attacked and no hope of getting paid despite this company has been paid before March potentially. I normally don't reveal when on contract but I definitely felt something under the Larry(Les) presence a little earlier while looking at my account to try to pay for the post office box. My hope is to taylor everything for building from scratch and raw like a real man. I have gotten shit the entire time since back in the 90's for trying to find a true carpenter/joiner/stone worker/mason/ earth worker who can go to any land, feel the land and know how to build from scratch and raw. That is Real to me but in the short term to do anything for myself even under conventions of the social order is some minimal purpose and sense of accomplishment. To last on jobs I was being attacked and potted-out and forced to try to sell their pot just to have that shit job and no one in the market liked all the way back liked me asking to do Real Carpentry. I don't feel there is any Real America(obviously Pre-America) and I have been abducted into a bad multi-level dream life where it is nothing but different social types just chasing fake money getting less self sufficient by the day dumber and more lazy where to muster proper motivation is a chore more controlled by different richass groups.

I think you got off topic there! LOL. The pitch/slope of a roof is determined sometimes by climate ,architecture or need. We can discuss this more in the forum if you like but generally speaking a 4/12 to 6/12 slope is all you need.
