We did it for years back in the 80's. We would put 980 clear over martin senior single stage since it laid out nicer than centari. We just used the 980 hardener in the color and never had any issues.

That was a first. Now I have sprayed all current versions. Acrylic enamel, synthetic enamel, and urethane and oil based. Will be adding activated clear to urethane single stage or adding a clearcoat layer to all my single stage jobs now. Will give the customer the option of which.

I did the same about 13 years ago. Build was for "Four n' Rotary" nationals show and shine. Car was a green 86' mazda 323 rolling shell 2 weeks out, converted it to Mitsubishi Lancer evo6 engine and awd, full retrim, rewired, tuned then test driven, stripped and then decided on ppg 2k dg black (single stage, two part direct gloss) to save on time, didn't like it one solid colour, so scuffed then copied the original Mazda bfmr two tone laying gunmetal grey base coat on lower half and around the window surrounds, then one solid coat of ppg high solid 2k clear over top of both colours and a flow coat, drove it there with no hood as it was still baking and it looked immaculate under false lights in the show. The black looked ten miles deep and like it was dripping.. Since then I've done the same to single stages to add depth and gloss to quick and easy paint jobs, like my evo on my channel.

So I work part time at a collision shop after school. I'm in Collision Repair class until August. We use the PPG Shopline products, not for or against it. Well I recently used clear "universal spot hardner" in my epoxy primer cuz it's all we had. As of right now it worked and is getting ready for base. I already base coated the hood and everything worked fine. Only time will tell how long it will last tho. It's kinda funny the things you can get away when it comes to painting.

I have done this several times for an entire car. What I have found is that it almost doesn't matter what you use for a base coat it's simply just a color. I've actually used Rust-Oleum paint as a base coat color and then used actual automotive clear coat. For the clear coat I used Speedokote glamor clear and got almost showroom quality finish out of it. Although I've used Rust-Oleum as a base coat and gloss the best results I had was using rustoleum thinned down and in a satin Sheen and then used the clear coat over it and I got the best results with that.

I was thinking of doing exactly that to parts of my black truck. How much did you thin it and with what. Good old paint thinner or reducer? How long did you let it dry before clear coating. I just don't feel like spending $200 for black auto paint
@webmastersof
@webmastersof Жыл бұрын
@@shantor100 There are many different thinners that you can use to thin the paint however I used acetone. I mixed it four parts paint to three parts of acetone. You can use a gloss rustoleum however I found in my personal experience that a satin Sheen seems to lay flatter and smoother on the vehicle and then you can clear coat over that. I only waited long enough for the paint to get tacky so maybe 20 minutes to a half hour after I sprayed the base coat (Rust-Oleum) I learned this trick from a professional auto body shop near me called lakeside Auto body here in Michigan. I will post the link here for you to see exactly how to mix it to make things easier. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/np-lnbR9qc7Hm5s.html

I'm sorry I thought you wanted to share your knowledge and experience I enjoy your videos and you have inspired me to paint. Maybe I'm starting out like you with a harbor freight gun and a wish to be creative. Maybe one day I could be talented like you. It's a gift you should be proud of. That being said I'm sure you get a bunch of repetitive questions that might anoy you. I'm sorry you felt the need to make fun of the people that watch your videos and look to you for guidance. Bye the way the clear looks amazing over single stage good job.

single coat of clear is gonna be a huge problem later on when it peels off from UV damage, and it's gonna look like shit. I'd rather just have the single stage paint uncoated. At least oxidation can be buffed out with single stage.
