So I bought that brow gel (before any influencers reviewed it), and I did not like it. I kept trying to get it to work, but the gel ends up looking like dandruff in your eyebrows and peels off. The beauty community had problems ever since the beginning of KZfaq days if you define it by only the big most famous influencers. The whole reason the laws for promotions for social media had to be made in the first place was because the first set of influencers never disclosed. Because it wasn't even expected. That's why morphe became as huge as it did and then became bankrupt the day disclosure was taken seriously on KZfaq. But "the beauty community" isn't just the big guys. You have small and medium creators and always has them whether it was 2013 KZfaq or 2023 tiktok and they are passionate about makeup and not money. It's about what you're wanting to focus and what you choose to watch or support.

I really think companies should start investing more in their employees, take THEM on brand trips for education on product launches and give them more hours and better incentives. I’m sorry, but these influencers have tarnished the industry and people are realizing that and they’re not holding that power anymore as to what people will buy. An influencer may be able to sell one product, but a freelance artist can sit that person in a chair and educate them and convince them to buy 10 products. They are the backbones of these companies and need to be treated as such. Personally, I am less likely to buy products from companies that spoil these bratty influencers with packages and trips because it’s just foolish at this point. These people will say anything if the price is right.

I will say about Mikayla’s accent: I had a sort of “hick” accent normal to the area I was raised in. It’s not as much of a deviation from the “standard” US accent as Mikayla’s, but it’s still very much there. I was encouraged by a middle school teacher to try to drop as much of it as I could and adopt a the “standard” accent for a variety of reasons, which I did train myself to do. I obviously don’t know what Mikayla’s true situation is in regard to her accent, but dropping/masking an accent is very much something people do.

I am from a part of Utah that has a strong Utah accent. I trained myself out of it when I moved to Seattle because people who's first language is not English genuinely could not understand me and teachers told me I "sounded untintelligent". However, when I talk on the phone with friends from the state at all my accent completely comes back to the extent that my husband misses a lot of what I'm saying through the accent. So I believe her that it comes and goes sometimes and why someone would want to suppress it.

I don’t even wear makeup, but I used to enjoy watching a couple people just because I liked their personalities. There used to be some true makeup artists on KZfaq who would show us tutorials using their favorite makeup brushes and palettes. I feel like those people got so much pressure to switch things up and try new makeup products or they just wouldn’t get the views. So in a way, it was the consumers who weeded out those talented makeup artists who weren’t pushing new products on us. It was the consumers who wanted their favorite makeup gurus trying new makeup products for them… At this point, there’s not much new under the sun, so if it works, just use it. How many new makeup brushes can you possibly buy that will change your life? We’re just constantly searching for our new holy grail, but is it really that much better than what’s already in the market? Like Bretman said, the beauty community has become all about money and consumerism.

I definitely don't think the Beauty Community is "Done" I think it needs a revamp of new faces with honest and trustworthy people. My Friend Allie is a beauty channel and reviews makeup however even after a few years she is still a very small creator because she refuses to conform and lie just to sell products for brands. She is very honest in her reviews no matter what and unfortunately brands don't like that. More people need to be more like her and I think the Community will bounce back just fine.

how you can spot the sponsors and paid ads also when they don't disclose is they usually say about 4 positive things before 1 slightly negative thing, the 1 negative is supposed to trick you into thinking it's authentic so you'll buy, and the negative thing usually isn't even that negative or anything that would deter ppl from buying

Honestly I do think that the beauty community is on the verge of dying out which I think is kinda relieving because then there would be a lot less drama and scandals but at the same time It genuinely would be sad to see a community that I grew up watching die out. However, I don’t think for a second that the beauty community/influencers will stop no matter how things turn out because these are peoples jobs and passions. Even if the beauty community revives in years/months to come I don’t think I could ever be apart of that ever again and I think a lot of people feel that way as well, its just so tiring trying to believe in the community when MOST (not all) influencers that you really like/liked prove you wrong constantly.

The only thing I can comment on from experience is the accent. I moved from Michigan to Indiana and a thick accent (sounded Canadian) and while I wasn’t “bullied” it was definitely a topic of conversation WHENEVER I said certain words like bacon, car, toast etc. so I too worked hard to talk in a more muted way so my accent wouldn’t keep being a topic of conversation

Aside from Mikayla drama, I believe this is a much bigger problem in the beauty community. The audience doesn’t trust or believe anymore because these problematic influencers caused so much drama, Shane Dawson, Jeffery star, Tati, notice Bretman rock was not wrong. These people don’t know how to take accountability… I’m sick of them all posting a video of them “crying” to apologize. We need fresh faces with great personalities and authenticity to turn this around. Let the girls be girls again and create a safe space for anyone who enjoys makeup. We already have limited options on which hobbies we can enjoy without being criticized. Lets work to create that environment again where we can all enjoy makeup and creativity again. It all starts with our mindset and being on the right side of KZfaq.
