10 ай бұрынJames Gurney demonstrates the step-by-step process of painting two restorations of the dinosaur Spinosaurus under the direction of Dr. Paul Sereno of the University of Chicago.
Dr. Sereno's scientific paper in Nature Magazine is called "Spinosaurus is Not an Aquatic Dinosaur." Sereno's team developed a CT-based skeletal restoration of Spinosaurus and examined its hydrodynamic properties. They found that the digital model of Spinosaurus performed very poorly in water, supporting the alternative "semi-aquatic hypothesis." In an interview, Sereno said, "I don't think it was a good swimmer nor capable of full submergence behavior."

Indeed. I do traditional paleoart sculptures with epoxy and I'm always prone to rework something if isn't ok, even when it's already painted or even months after it's finished. We have to give our best, specially if it's a commission

Great insight, they say that both James Whistler and Valentin Serov used to repeatedly obliterate their daily effort on a painting, eventually reworking it a hundred times.

The correction made on the pose at the 4:00 min mark really gave a new perspective on how there can always be made improvements no matter the stage on which the painting is. Also, I have never thought of using maquettes this way before. Thank you, Mr Guney.

A lesser artist (such as myself) would never be brave enough to paint over a fully rendered subject to make an adjustment! Bravo, love your methodical process!

If a artist on the level of James Gurney can spend as much time and effort doing preliminary work on a piece, only to see after finishing the painting that it is still unsatisfactory, and changes are needed, is a lesson not to be missed.

This reminds us of Tintoretto, who made small wax models of figures to help with scale and lighting in his paintings. We think these videos will become an important record for future artists!

I remembered being really pissed as a child when Spinosaurus turned out to be a glorified crocodile. So this was cool news for me, at least my younger self. Absolutely stunning work from the master of paleo art himself.

Mr. Gurney, I was introduced to your work through Dinotopia as a small boy. I absolutely loved it and the rest of the series. All of your work is outstanding, but seeing you paint dinosaurs is always a special treat for me. My mom is an art teacher, so seeing an artist show their process is someone we share. I hope people can enjoy and be inspired by your work for a very long time to come.

I had a CD with Dinotopia games on it as a child and since then dinotopia has always been in the back of my mind. The ship wreck, the discovery of the island, the sky backs, and the art. I've always wanted to go to the world you created.

My guess would be that you wouldn't call it brave to paint over the finished piece to adjust pose for a better final result. You simply know what quality you need to achieve and how to achieve it. Impressive!

I would love if you made a video about your thumbnailing process, what goes into it, and how you got to a point where it (seems to be) so effortless for you. This whole video is impressive but the thumbnailing at the start stood out the most too me since that is something I would be spending ages on to do a single composition that good, and you seemed to pump out a bunch of them easily.

I love seeing your process for a finished painting!! Is the final work in gouache? Also, what was the white pen you used in the studies? It was great seeing you make that correction towards the end. I find it hard to correct in gouache/watercolor but you made it look easy. Beautiful painting! ❤

Thanks! The finished painting was in oil, chosen to ease blending, but gouache would work too. The white pen was a gel pen.

We were at Disney world yesterday, and the conversation came up: why hasn’t any theme park picked up Dinotopia as a major attraction by now? With the technology that’s available now it would be pretty awesome to visit Dinotopia! The possibilities are countless. We figured the copyright was locked up somehow. Just curious

Another Spinosaurus masterpiece. Interesting, I wish that was out on DVD like some of my few recent favorite ones which featured Horned Dinosaurs & Tyrant Dinosaurs. 0:14-0:15 That other Skeleton along with the Spinosaurus, is that a Suchomimus? It sure looks like Suchomimus The Crocodile Mimic because it’s spiny sail on its back is smaller compared to the 6 FT taller spines & it’s huge body is both a little bit smaller & half the size of it’s Larger relative Spinosaurus.

For the revisions you made it looked like you were using a picture of a 3d model for reference. Was the 3d model provided by the author of the paper?

Yes, the team that worked with Paul Sereno modeled the dinosaur in 3D to better understand its likely behavior on land and in water.

I'm reading Dinotopia right now and am completely in love with the world you created. There are so many fantasy worlds out there but yours stands out, not only for the dinosaurs but for being an actual Utopia wich is such a breath of fresh air. Is it okay if I create paintings set in this world too?
