An unstable self image is one hallmark of Borderline Personality Disorder, alongside instability in emotions, relationships, cognitions and behaviors.
This is part 4 of a 5 part series breaking down those areas which define BPD.
Given Borderline Personality Disorder exists on a spectrum, some or none of what is described in this video may apply to you or someone with BPD.
💕As always, please know that my desire to help people on both ends of this disorder, or any other mental health or relationship issue, to understand, to validate and to support you.💕🙏🏻

Hello Dr. Kim 💗. I am religiously watching your videos and I am 64 years old. I have been writing to you about my BPD and that my 26 year old daughter has not spoken to me in over 2 years. I have bookmarked your last video, healing the wounds from your borderline mother. I watched it once, and there is so much really great information in it, especially one sentence where you speak of an older child actually having to separate away from the Borderline mother. Of course, this is exactly what has happened to me. Although my daughter has been in her own therapy since she "abandoned" me, I have kept thinking that a good therapist would want to get us back together, but now I think it very well could have been her therapist that told her to split away from me to get herself better, an upsetting thought. I am in my own therapy, for 7 weeks now and he has been asking me and guiding me about what I believe is all the unthought of cracks in my personality, and it is all in it's infant stages of getting better...BUT... I am completely freaking out because just what does it mean to get better? Under all of this new awakening, I am in complete denial that anything is wrong with me except for my abandonment feelings and how I can hold in one sentence that someone had said to me and pace back and forth with it for days. Can you say that there is a reality to "getting better?" How will I know? I'm not cutting or stealing or other impulsive habits from years ago, but am I really mentally BPD? Don't answer that. Of course I am. Maybe you could make a video about what comes next in a BPD patient who wants to get better...will I be in therapy forever? Right now, thinking about all this has me hyperventilating...I'm so unsure of the future and what it means to get better...as always, thank you for all you are doing... Sincerely, Sheri in Florida

As the daughter of a 70something year old mother with BPD, let me say, I am proud of you! My mother won’t even admit she has a problem and she blames me for everything that is wrong with the relationship p, accuses me of “labeling” or “keeping her sick in my mind” and keeping her away from her grandchildren because she won’t take meds for a mental illness she doesn’t think she has. Admitting it is a big step! I hope you can continue to improve and help your daughter heal from the divisions this unfortunate illness causes, for both of your sakes.

Thank you so much for this, Kim. I've long been aware of the fact that I don't have a discernible self of sense, but to be perfectly honest I always assumed everyone else felt the same way! It was only after talking with a friend who's a psychologist that the existence of this 40-year old hole inside me became clear. The revelation that I *should* exist is both exciting and bothersome, and I have recently started keeping a very simple journal, noting down positive and negative feelings throughout the day. I hope that by paying close enough attention to myself, I'll be able to build something of a personality that's fit for purpose - or at least good enough to see me through to the end of my natural life.

Have you read “the drama of the gifted child?” Could you make a video on that?

Would you pls consider making a video about how differential diagnosis is made between BPD and ASD? This “sense of self” issue is common to both BPD and ASD (especially women on the spectrum who often receive very late ASD diagnoses as adults or get misdiagnosed as having BPD or bipolar instead of ASD). And of course, a person could have both ASD and BPD. To complicate things, a woman with undiagnosed/late diagnosis of ASD could have experienced a very traumatic childhood/anxiety/depression due to moving through the neurotypical world, potentially resulting in PTSD, too. How to tease it all out?

Subscribed! Thank you thank you so so so much! It's so hard to find outlets for borderline personality disorder! I feel their is not much support or acknowledgment as much as "ADD,ADHD,PTSD" & WE NEED TO CHANGE THIS WITHIN THE YEARS COMING! Can I share my story is their anyway to contact you before hand & share my upbringing that caused this "neglect/abandoned & sexual abuse as a child"! & Then share things that effect me day to day with this disorder & problems with trying to explain it to my family but unfortunately being told I'm just normal and everyone has those feelings! Causing me to not be able to share this since!

Hi if anyone is reading this comment then I will be very grateful ? People with BPD lack self respect , so how do they build self respect, does self-validation skill in DBT build self respect? Please reply. Thanks.
