Sprint Faster video contents
In the first video in this series on how to sprint faster I take a look at frequency (stride rate) and overspeed training. We consider how you can develop your leg speed and max velocity running. Various types of "runs" are shown (bursts, max velocity added to max velocity and variable efforts).
I also talk about overspeed and its limitations.
This video is slightly different to the majority of the others on the channel in that it is slightly more research focussed.
Improving sprint speed is a complex subject and I hope that the information that I provide (practical and theoretical) will assist you in your quest for greater speed.

probably the most important aspect is that the athlete develops a strong focus on the feeling. There aren't much athletes/coaches who comprehend the importnce of a strong focus. It requires a highly motivated mental state. That is where the best athletes differs from the average. I don't talk about the motivation you guys probably think. It's more like: focusing more on this like anything else. The brain has to use all it's capacity for this single thing 'sprinting as fast as possible'. No friends, no food, no party, no work, NO pressure, NO deflection. Can you do it?

I agree the athlete needs to have a full on mental focus when sprinting and jumping. I do think, however, that they need to have some positive (sensible) download time which will allow mind and body to regenerate. This will enable them to be fresher for each session. Thanks for passing by.

Great video! As a road marathoner for the past 5 years, I'm always looking for new tips on motivation, getting stronger and preventing dreaded injuries. It seems like yoga and core strength work are a great way to excel! Your post is very inspirational. As a fellow KZfaqr, I love sharing my knowledge and experiences to help other runners. Many thanks and yes, doing YT takes a lot of effort. I just about manage to keep up with a once a week schedule. Pre-conditioning, which involves core and stretches and specific exercises, is indeed crucial for all runners and athletes and is something that we (and I) keep going all the year round. As a group of 15 we very rarely suffer injuries so something must be working! Good luck with your running and with your channel.

This is something that would take quite a bit of time for me to do. I have been asked about training programmes many times before. I may therefore, as I have mentioned in my videos launch channel memberships (for this there would be a small fee) where I can do this on a month by month basis in video format and with potentially links to a programme in the video description.

Mr. Shepherd, so You would not recommend doing overspeed (assistence method) at all? I new the controversy about running downhill, becase it changes the angle, but anything? The kite or bungee rope?

Well, from what I understand it won't really work in terms of its supposed aim - i.e. directly improve speed. However, as I indicate on occasions in my videos it can improve eccentric capability and also have a potentiating effect, which can boost on-flat sprinting. If you see it as having a use for you for these purposes then I would include it from time to time in your training, Hope this helps. Oh, this includes towed methods as well as downhill.

You need to work on your heel recovery through hip (front and back) drills and exercises. Check out this video (see below) and others in the Sprint Drills playlist. You need to also focus on working the hips to achieve the required the positions when sprinting. Focus on lifting and pulling the foot across the body to the front (not just round and round). I like your video's John but you have not understood the secrets of improving cadence. All your athletes have a "stuck in the mud" stride and low cadence . From my research and eork with overspeed I have found it improves the athletes performance about 0,2 over 100 m . There is a biomechanical trick to improving cadence.
