Let's talk about the topical use of St. John's wort, a medicinal herb (Hypericum perforatum). Watch as I strain off the ruby red liquid infused oil from the fresh plant matter I harvested last summer, then we'll make an incredible pink healing salve with the infused oil and some special essential oils that contribute to the effectiveness of the healing salve. We'll discuss a bit of chemistry too! #herbalism #herbalist #salve #essentialoils #heidivillegas #healingharvesthomestead

Hi Heidi, I am becoming more and more interested in herbalism, however I live in the Caribbean and a lot of your wild plants are not native here. I am trying to acquire some at the moment. Do you have any suggests for me who do not have access to these plants?

Yes, it's time! I've got more infusing, too, and these I will leave for a couple more months I think, because I didn't utilize a sunny window for them....they seem weaker this time. But not that batch in the video! It was a beautiful color....

Oh, my goodness!!! I am such an advocate for St.Johns wort Oil. I had always heard and read about how amazing it is for things like minor burns and nerve pain, but it's one thing to hear about it and another entirely to experience it. Not long after I had made my very first batch of this ruby red oil, I spilled boiling coffee all over my hand and wrist (at work)...I used ice and cold packs but the pain was pretty bad all day (I am stubborn and didn't go home)...but when I finally got home I soaked some cloths in St.John's Oil and wrapped them around my hand...I couldn't even believe it!!!....within minutes, the pain had subsided and the burning feeling gone! I continued to use it for the next few days, just to help with healing, but I have never experienced anything like that before. Herbs are just amazing!

Wow! Thank you so much for sharing this! What a difference too. I know the last time I got a bad burn....SJW was the answer, and yes, for me the reduction in pain was amazing too.

Good morning Heidi. Thank you for this easy recipe. I especially like the helpful hint of cleaning up while the St. John's Wort is still in its liquid form, great advice. I am having a very hard time finding dried Arnica. Would using Willow infused oil with the St. John's Wort be a good combination for pain? Comfrey helps heal bones, ligaments and tendons, does St. John's Wort infused oil topically help heal as Comfrey does, or is it a surface pain reliever? Any thoughts on St. John's Wort tincture or salve for cold sores? Thank you.
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 8 ай бұрын
Hi--I know about finding arnica....it's getting more difficult, and it's very expensive. That's the trouble as herbalism explodes in interest, people are not treating the plants well, and sustainability is becoming more and more of an issue. SJW and comfrey do completely different things due to the chemical constituents they contain, unfortunately. SJW more supports surface skin health (within a couple of layers) and the nervous system, including surface nerves and issues; while comfrey is a master at knitting tissue back together and helping to alleviate muscle pains, etc.

@@HeidiVillegas Thank you, Heidi. I will be looking for Arnica seeds. I think I found a company Strictly Medicinal Seed Company and I will research them. Have you tried growing it? I live in a senior community that allows me to garden. I think I have a spot near my St. John's Wort. :0)

When you are melting the beeswax in the oil, does the heat breakdown the benefits in the oil? Thank you
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 8 ай бұрын
No, it's not a high heat, as the water is barely simmering, if at all---it's just warm enough to melt the beeswax slowly. You definitely don't want to "cook" your oil!

It actually does cause photosensitivity when taken internally. I've taken it a few years ago and got severe sunburns.

So, awesome. Heidi, if I use dry St John's worth, is it not good? I don't have fresh, but I really want to do it, but I also don't want to spend my herbs if it won't work. I use St John's worth on a tea for my gout, with celery seed, and it has been so good. 😊

Hello, I was wandering if mixing comfrey and St. John’s wort for nerve and joint pain would be ok to do as one salve together? I have a torn meniscus and I have sciatica and just don’t want to make a ton of different salves. I have heard comfrey is good for healing joints and st.johns wort is good for nerve,and they are both good for minor scrapes and bruises I was wandering if they would be a good pair to use together plus some essential oils… kind of want an all around salve. Thank you!

Is it only the flower that makes it red? I had some dried that I purchased and infused it with almond oil and I was disappointed that it didn't go red
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 8 ай бұрын
The leaves have a bit of the hypericin too, but if you bought dried, it will not turn red. Scientists are still trying to figure out the mystery of St. John's wort and why solvents turn red. Some think it's the hypericin content, but I do believe there is still some retained even when dried...hence the continued contraindications for people on SSRI's and other meds.
