I haven't! But...it's super easy. Using the dried cayenne powder, fill a jar roughly 1/3 full. Fill to within one inch of the top with 80 proof or higher alcohol. Shake faithfully every day (or the powder will turn to cement, lol) for 4-6 weeks. Strain off the liquid. Enjoy!

When making the cayenne infused oil for the pain salve, do you use the whole cayenne pepper or do you use powder, or does it matter which you use?
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 2 жыл бұрын
I normally don't prefer using powders in extractions, especially in oils, but I've found that with cayenne, you get a REALLY powerful infused oil with the powder. The trick is to shake it daily. If you're growing your own cayenne, just use a grinder dedicated to herbs and be sure to clean it well after use. :-)
@anthm429
@anthm429 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Heidi. So for a cayenne infused oil we would use 2 cups of cayenne and 4 cups of oil? (For the 1:2 ratio).
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 2 жыл бұрын
No, just go by the jar size is best. Fill your cayenne about 1/3 to just under a half full in the jar. Then add your olive oil. Use a skewer or shake well to fully incorporate the oil. Then you'll need to top it off as the cayenne will absorb some. It's important to shake it daily because otherwise the cayenne powder gets compacted. Good luck!

How long do you tincture for a topical liniment so it does not burn the skin? And do you strain out the fine powder or leave it in a liniment?
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 2 ай бұрын
I always strain out the powder. For the tincture, there are a lot of variables including the S.H.U. and how much you use, plus the proof of alcohol. I would test it on your skin as the weeks go by.

How do I use to help with pain and pre diabetic
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 11 ай бұрын
You'll need to choose a good Skoville heat rating for your body first, and then decide how you want to use the cayenne---internally or externally or both, then make the preparations you need. There are quite a few options with cayenne, so people will choose what's best for them. :-) For join pains, for example, most people prefer the salve....some with just the heat; and others find some relief by adding cooling herbs/oils to it too. If you're pre-diabetic, be sure to discuss lifestyle changes with your doctor because pre-diabetes may be able to be completely reversed! And that's the best thing.

Does the heat unit impact its medicinal value? I.e. the higher the HU the more concentrated the healing value?
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas Жыл бұрын
To an extent, yes. I feel that the range of heat units is best between 30K and 90K. There's not much reason to go hotter than that, and temporarily burning the skin is a potential issue (as I've found from experience).

Can you please tell me if there are two different types of Cayenne peppers? Thank you. I asked because I bought a packet and it's very spicy; my daughter gave me a packet and the colour is slightly darker and it's not spicy at all!
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 8 күн бұрын
Hey, SkinnyDee! So, the peppers are in the Solanaceae family, and in this family are the Capsicum genus. Within the Capsicum genus, you'll find around 25 different species. Cayenne (Capsicum annuum) has a high amount of the chemical capsaicin, and this is why most herbal preparations for pain relief, soothing nerve pain, etc. are made with this species. The most common range of heat units are between 60K to 90K although there's a larger range than those. So, you'll need to know the species name of the pepper your daughter brought home. And then if you can, see if you can get the heat unit range. Most nurseries don't give you the Skoville heat unit range. You can purchase your cayenne powder from quality herb suppliers, like Starwest or Mountain Rose or Pacific Botanicals---they test the heat units for you so that you'll know what you're getting. If you grow your own, which I also recommend, you'll not really know for sure your heat unit range. But cayenne is just one of those peppers that works!
