STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER! 5 Reasons You SHOULD NOT GET A Staffy! Staffies are not for everyone, they are incredible dog breed, one of my favourites in fact, but that doesn't not mean everyone should get a staffordshire bull terrier, and in today's video I explain why!

I've had Staffies for over 30 years, I currently have my 3rd Staff Tia, who's almost 4 and wouldn't have any other breed, to me there isn't a more honest, trustworthy, loyal and more loving dog in the world, in saying that, any breed is only as good as their owner, there is NO such thing as a bad dog just had owners, it's not what's on the hook end of the lead but on the handle end of the lead that counts

An Irish Red Setter, then a sheepdog, then a staff. My father had a sort of lurcher when I was very young but he lived at my grandparents as my parents had only been able to rent an attic room divided into two. Years later we moved to a ground floor flat with gardens but sadly Diddy had passed by then. My grandmother also had a quite large spaniel. Then later a miniature poodle (highly intelligent). My mother and stepfather had a curly haired largish dog which may have been a x with a poodle, and was very protective. A man reached into the van to grab my mum once when she opened it to get out. The dog leapt at him and chased him down the street until called back. Another time when very unusually they could not take her out with them (she went to their work with them and most other places) they had to leave her home. They returned a couple of hours later to find a downstairs window forced open but nothing missing. A policeman came just to make notes (they did so then) and remarked that they knew the colour of the burglar and pointed to a bit of denim and lump of black skin on the floor which my parents hadn't seen. After Suzie passed away my stepfather homed a large, lively lurcher who had been too much her owners to handle. On one occasion she saved my sheepdog when a Swan was about to attack her when she was swimming in a pond (nowhere near the Swan. It went quite a way toward her before we realised it was going to attack her). The lurcher, Becky, saw what was going on and quickly swum to chase the dangerous bird away and swim with my dog back to shore. Didn't try to hurt it but chased it away. Her demeanour alone was "you leave my friend alone!". Our neighbour had a cat that was as protective as any dog towards his kittens. He and my father's female cat mated and were more like husband and wife. One evening my father was standing out on the front path to exercise the little kittens but keep an eye on them. A full size poodle pushed the gate open and went to go for the kits. Their father was seen to leap two walls of about 3.5ft, like a steeplechase horse, and set about the dog which was huge in comparison. It ran out and it was so funny after that, every time its owner came past with it the dog would reach next doors gate then turn at a 45deg angle to the kerb, well away from our gate, walk past watching all the white, then once past our gate it would do another 45deg angle so it was walking alongside the front walls again. My father kept one of the kittens who became very loyal to me in particular even though my dad fed him. My husband and I lived there for a while and when I went to give birth and was away for a week, he waited outside the front for three days and nights. My dad had to take his food and water out as he would not go in for so long. Then when I stepped out of the car with a screaming bundle the poor boy ran off terrified, and refused to come in for another three days and nights. When he did he looked at me as if hurt and betrayed. My father's first female cat came camping with us, and in a rubber dinghy with an outboard motor. No lead. We just carried her and watched her all the time. The one time she went missing my father found her atop the frame tent watching us and most of the other champers searching for her. Lol. We were sure that her early life adventures were the reason she was ultra clever - for a moggy. Bad blood and mental illness seem to be much less readily inherited by at least domesticated animals. Imo 99% of the time their temperaments is due to handing. All they need is love and the basics. Same as a child really.

I don't suppose you have ever had a breed like a labrador so your claims are totally invalid. I've seen Staffies and their behaviour, half the time the owners think they have some sort of authority on a lead when they walk them in public. No, don't give us the old "what a loving wonderful breed" crap, review the figures for dog attacks and see how many were Staffies.

I got a 4 years Staffy like 1 year ago and I cannot complain about him. At the beginning, I was a little bit scared because his previous owner didn't give him any kind of positive affective filter. Instead, he received a bad attention. To a certain extent, he was practically abandoned and for this reason, I started taking care of him. I carried him home, gave him food, and bathed him. Now he is really happy and enjoys playing all the time. He is trying to recover all these years over the mistreatment he got...

I'm here because one adopted me 6 months ago. After months of trying to locate owner, I am keeping her, and she is chipped, fixed ect. Didnt even know she was purebred until this morning when her DNA results came back. She is the best dog I never knew I needed or wanted. And she doesnt bother my 18 year old cat. The seperation anxiety makes sense because she was into everything and destroyed so many toys and pillows when I kept her outside over the summer. Now that she is more of an indoor dog, that has all but stopped. She follows me and my 12 year old around all the time, and has loved anyone that comes to the home. Will keep learning so I can take care of her the best I can, cause she sure as hell is the best thing of 2020 that happened in my life. Lol

Heartbreaking. I am genuinely sorry to read this as 19 years is such a long time. Almost two decades. He must have had wonderful genes and you must have done everything right for him to live to such an age. The eldest they usually reach is around 14 and not always until then. A vet told me between 8 and 10 years of age. I am sure he is still with you. I know mine is with me as are my earlier fur babies and I will be with them again. My former mother in law told me that when she was in bed at night she would feel the weight of hers Jumping up beside her and settling down even after she had another dog. I believed her. When we love a pet they are a huge part of our lives. We are all of their lives and when they are that loyal they would lay their lives down to protect us, and do so without thinking for a moment. How many people do we know who would do that without stopping to think? They see us as their reason for living and that is another reason to look after and love them as best we can.

Just found ya channel and watched this vid....good onya mate. I'll be checking out some more. I have a 3 and a half year old male...I was a total recluse for 5 years before I got him. In the past I've been a manager for the RSPCA in Australia and also worked as a professional dog trainer. (funny name for it though, you'll understand it isn't the dogs I was training) I have what they tell me is severe PTSD. I got him as a pup and trained him up as a companion dog. Forcing me out of my home knowing he needed to be socialized for his own good. I don't watch television so I didn't realize that folk with PTSD can now have service dogs....but getting out a little I soon heard about it and realized my dog fit all the criteria. Usually costs $75,000 in Oz to train up such dogs but my boy was accepted no problem. He is now a registered PTSD service dog and has really changed my life. I had always had Red Heelers before but after losing the last one I decided I would change breeds and chose the Stafford. What an amazing breed. I am totally in love with them. My boy is just a wonderful dog. Wanders through the sheep and chickens, goats , ducks and turkeys at my place and doesn't bat an eye. They sure have a sense of humor and just won't leave my side. That smile. My super special service staffy. :-) I doubt there is another Staffy in the country that is a service dog. They usually train up Labrador Retrievers out here for the most part. But he's perfect for it. Awesome nature they have. I'm a convert. lol

But alerts to anyone outside the property. Probably the sweetest dog Ive ever met. Though in the 80s I had a staff cross called Caya, she was a lovely little personality. I had 7 happy years with her....until one day somebody took her from my garden. One of the worst experiences Ive gone through, not knowing what they did to her. Thank you for your channel. I am new here and I am researching the breed. I am in NZ and two weeks ago I have adopted a rescue puppy who was 10 weeks old when I adopted her. 💖 The shelter people thought initially that she was a bearded collie x NZ huntaway. Given that I have an older huntaway x border collie x labrador boy, I figured she would be a good buddy for him. However, as she is growing, a number of us believe that she is, in fact, a staffy, possibly mixed with labrador. LOL 😂 she's not what I "signed up for", but I absolutely love her! 😍 I have had dogs for many years, including a part pit bull rescue, and another terrier breed rescue, so I am not at all fazed with Jazz. 💖 I found your description very helpful, and it rings true. My dogs are indoors/outdoors as they desire, and they sleep inside. I look forward to seeing more of your videos as Jazz and I grow together. She's 3 months old now, and super Intelligent and strong! 😊 At some stage I will get her dna done, so I can be certain of her background. She and her siblings were dumped in a box, in a farm shed. 😕

I have had 5 staffies and they are the most gentle, loving dogs ever ! Never had an aggressive one or a destructive one. They are loyal to one person only but love everyone. They are fine around other animals as long as they are socialized properly. Basically it all comes down to the owner... if you're a mongrel owner you will have a mongrel dog. I agree with some of what you say but not all of it. Yes you are rubbishing the breed, it is not the breed, it is the owner. I will always own a stafford until the day I die. They are and always will be the best dog ever!

*sitting with my staffy watching this video* Btw she is barely trained and is the sweetest and best behaved doggo i have ever seen.She is very good with the family we have had her for a year now. She fits into my family so perfectly even with my 4 year old sister she still behaves and is basically an oversized, whiny teddy bear. I can confirm though that we did have a few issues when we got her as a puppy because she definitely destroyed many of our belongings but this issue was solved with a few puppy classes. She definitely is energetic but she still sleeps majority of the time but it has never bothered us if we need to take her to the park or for walks or just play with her at home. Just a heads up for anyone getting a staffy majority of them do end up with separation anxiety, mine is left home alone for up to 6 hours and she is fine but gets very attached to usually me when we arrive home. And they can sometimes be a little bit annoying because they do tend to pick a favourite person and follow them around the house. Thanks for reading! :)

I've always grown up around EBT's and SBT's and we now have our own SBT. One point I would raise is be prepared for alot of misconception with them. We regularly have people crossing the street, grabbing their children (even though they have a dog themselves) or just plain leaving the area when we take ours out. It can be a bit disheartening as they're such a lovely breed.

Absolutely. I admit I was one of those people who had picked up on the negative rep from media and none dog people who always slated the breed. I ended up with a 14 month old red one in 2009 and after being the person who would cross the road if saw one coming my way, I hated myself when the same thing happened to me though I understand it cos I did it in the past (to be honest maybe it was the person's on the other end of the lead I was avoiding?) it took me a few weeks to totally relax and flip my impressions of the breed. I'm happy to say that my dog is still here just shy of 14. He has Cushing's disease now but is still happy and the love of my life. I will always go for a staffie from now on. I hope to re home one as and when, and for the rest of my dog owning life. The best breed and such a personality. OK mine isn't bothered by other dogs and is happy in an aloof way in their company but it's humans he really wants to be around. Just be sure to socialise and to be thick skinned when you encounter un educated and judgmental people, and you will. Definitely worth putting up with these type of people. The best thing to get over it is to treat everyone as someone who is scared of dogs and then you won't be upset when someone is being judgemental toward you and your dog. You quickly learn it's OK.
@jakewhite3505
@jakewhite3505 3 жыл бұрын
@@lennycook206 when you mention the other person on the end of the lead that's a good point. Unfortunately staffys still used by (for want of a better word) chavs as a status symbol but hopefully the quality of breeding and the increase in cost will whittle that out soon. They're a lovely breed and as you say love human contact, ours is literally part of our family.

Thanks for the talk. So important to know the characteristics of the dog your planning to have. My son has a staffordshire, I so look forward to looking after him. Fantastic points, great advice. Thanks for spreading the good and honest word about these great dogs. Yes, I'm biased! But, I think it's worth mentioning that even with the best upbringing and training, there's the potential that a Staffy might fight other dogs. This could be its companions at home, or a random dog down the park. Even if it's in self-defence, it could be very serious. Smart ownership should avoid this problem, but the potential is there and should be addressed.

I rarely see a video like this that I agree with everything that's said. Being a staffy owner for the last 25+ years and helping others understand them from what I knew before I got my first one and learned after I got one I agree 100% with everything said here. Thank you for not being opinionated, sharing 100% honest and true information. In my opinion the most important with a staffy is your #3, they truly are happiest when their owner is with them 24/7. Staffy's are an amazing breed and companion if you put the time in and love them like a dog should be. They are unfortunately not for everyone, as this video honestly shares.

LOVE MY STAFFY (HAD A FEW NOW) :-) they are also very chatty, mine talks alllll the time, they are loving and think they are"lap dogs" when my last ol'girl passed at 13 , with in 3 weeks I started looking for another one, because my lfe was and is no life without a staff in it, :-) I couldn't find a rescue so I went to a breeder and purchased another one, nothing like coming home to that happy face :-) we where lucky, we got her just as lock down hit in Australia, so we got lots of hands on and missed the distructive stage, she gets left in the house at 9months old when we head off to work, she waits on her mat until we get home ( ONLY 4HOURS) , she is also a great little watch dog....but probably LICK anyone to death if they dare come in :-) :-)

We have a rescued Staffy and love her to pieces! One thought is that they make great family members for active retired folks. I am very recently retired and my husband and I have all the time, attention, exercise and stimulation to offer Molly that working people may not be able to give. However, they’re known as nanny dogs and are great to have around families with babies and kids - talk about exercise and stimulation!! Gotta love this breed!!

Love your channel! QUESTION: I have growned up with a pure breed American Staff. I know the breed quite well. I now live in Australia and need to visit my dad and mum almost every year in France. I want to own a staffy however I am concerned about separation anxiety when I am in Europe for 3-4 weeks. My plan is to have my staffy socialises with my 2-3 groups of friends so she (It will be a female) is used to them and feel a bit at home. It is going to be a challenge but I reckon it is possible as long as the dog stay with my responsible friends. I love animals very much but I wonder if it is not too long being away from the owners for this breed. The friends I have picked have children and will take her for a walk twice a day. But none if them will be able to keep her for that long so she will have to stay with 2-3 different families for the 3-4 weeks period. What do you think? My children scream everyday for a dog but I have said no so far as I am concerned the dog will not cope very well. Has someone been in my situation? Thanks 🙏 for any wise advise and no judgement :).

Hi will just watched your video and wondered if you do training for problem dogs (and owners). We rehomed a staffy when she was no longer wanted by a breeder and she is the most wonderful dog i have ever owned but as soon as she see's another dog it's like she wants to attack them. The couple of times she has got away from me she runs upto them giving it loads of mouth but no actual biting. My local dog therapist is stumped and so are we. I would love to socialise her with other dogs but 8 months on it's still no better. We have to drive into the country 12 miles a day just to walk her safely. Any advice greatly appreciated.
