These twittrers took it as: "my therapist says it's normal to send death threats to JJ Abrams because I'm sad and angry. It's a valid coping mechanism." But this begs the question why were they seeing a therapist in the first place? Possibility 1: they were already in therapy for SW unrelated reasons. In which case I don't believe them that it's a normal reaction and response. Possibility 2: SW is actually responsible for this behavior. Like these people we're all hunky dory, levelheaded and suddenly one movie makes them go berserk. If that's the case these people have been emotionally neglected as children. No sane person goes to a therapist to ask what they're experiencing and the therapist says "well it's anger and sadness. Never heard of them? It's like joy and elation, but opposite."

So one of the big takeaways I got from this story is that there are either a number of therapists operating in the US that need their license revoked, or there's a number of people that need to do better at listening. I'd like to think there aren't mental health professionals out in the world trying to validate having homicidal anger over a movie plot. I would think what their therapist probably said was "a movie scene that reminds you of past abuse can trigger feelings related to that abuse; but any emotions that the movie scene bring up are misplaced and should be directed at the moment from which those emotions are derived." Being upset that a movie didn't go the way you wanted is OK. Sending a movie director threats is not. Saying that the movie is the reason you feel the way you do is also not ok. Your feelings are misplaced. Be mad at whatever abuser you had in your life, but that abuser wasn't JJ Abrams.
