They did have an outline supposedly but Rian Johnson decided to throw it all out. I don't think to give the director some leeway to bring their own touches to expand the content is a bad thing but when that director chooses to throw out the outline and make everything the first part of the trilogy was setting up pointless he should have been sacked on the spot. How no-one at Disney or Lucasfilm realised that it would not only make the first two movies disjointed BUT also make the job of whoever ended up doing the 3rd part's almost impossible is beyond me,. It's not even as if they have been shy about sacking directors they feel are going in the wrong direction so how did Rian Johnson slip through the net. Guess that's maybe where Star Wars does miss Lucas. Kennedy is a top-class producer despite what people like to now claim but I don't get the feeling she lives and breaths the content. They needed someone who could have filled Lucas role of gatekeeper be that JJ seeing as you could say he started the Disney Era or perhaps someone like Dave Filoni seeing as he is almost like Lucas apprentice or just someone else with a love of Star Wars and the grand vision

I couldn't understand why today's film makers do not understand about context. If they think that the 80s movies were not PC enough, then stop making sequels, reboots and other whatnots of past movies. They should start their own PC trilogies. Now, the James Bond franchise is next. EDIT: And I think RJ is a good director but he is an indie director who will not appreciate mainstream franchises. I would be, too. It's totally fair for JJ to be mad at that. Rian Johnson gave the characters no development in TLJ...just killed the mysterious characters off with no backstory and diverted the story to a new place with no meaning or purpose. Aka kill the past and show a broom boi looking up at the stars. It was stupid and it was not Star Wars. I'm probably in the minority that is totally fine with JJ bringing back Palpatine in TROS. You need a threat that both Rey and Ben Solo could unite against, because we all know that needed to happen and Ben needed to turn back to the light side. TROS has many issues, but Palpatine is good in it, and overall it's a decently entertaining movie with way more depth than TLJ.

TLJ was a pandering movie with modern day politics and a modern day leftist push that takes away from what it could have been. It answered none of what the movie before it did and ROS was able to ignore everything that it had done. It’s sad cus that’s not the way I think any of us wanted a sequel trilogy to be, but all we can do is pick up, learn from the past, and ignore all 3 of these movies when they change the cannon 20 years from now.

Lets say force awakens is right in the middle. Typical star wars movie. Johnson pushed the pendulum too far in one direction with his whole unnecessary attempt at reinvention (in the middle of the story for some reason but whatever) and JJ came back and pushed the pendulum allll the way in the other direction and tried to just cram as much fanny stuff into the movie as he could. At the end of the day, neither worked.

the dialogue in that scene was so bizarre. "i'm all the sith..." "well. i'm all the jedi, and i've got super mega jedi powers, pew pew". its like a child wrote it. those two people in that situation wouldnt say those things. they did that because they think the audience is dumb, and also because they did absolutely nothing to setup how the emperor is powerful because he has the power of all sith, and they barely setup rey being able to communicate with all the past jedi, suddenly that becamse she had all their power... because? the script needed it to be....

I didn't even watch the TLJ and won't watch TRoS since TFA disappointed me as an old Gen X official Star Wars fan club member. It was such a wasted opportunity and just like you I was waiting for all original cast members, Lando included to be reunited in one epic scene. Truth be told, I wouldn't mind Disney killing them all off heroically in one epic battle scene or with some dying from their wounds after that battle scene in TFA if Disney wanted to get rid of them to make way for the new Star Wars cast. But nooo, Han and Luke (I heard since I did not watch TLJ) died as fools and RJ did not even kill Leia (again I heard) in the TLJ when Carrie could no longer continue her story arc because she died. What a missed opportunity indeed. And based on what I've heard, RJ seemed to willfully kill Star Wars because he is not a bad director. As an indie director, I wouldn't put it past him since directors like him hate mainstream movies and franchises.

I'm not sure there is much in TLJ that you can build on really. So much of what Johnson ended up doing felt more like a 'Finale' than the middle part. I would hazard a guess in the original outline for the trilogy for example that Palpatine wasn't supposed to return but with Snoke being killed off that there just wasn't a bad guy to hang the movie off, After all, while Kylo Ren is a decent enough character nothing we had seen by the end of TLJ had him as really anything more than second in command material. In hindsight maybe what we needed was two movies focusing on the original cast with Rey, Finn, Poe and Kylo being introduced but not the focus and then and then maybe Johnson's take would have worked setting up a trilogy with the new characters at the forefront with an almost blank slate BUT Johnson doing what he did as the middle part of a trilogy it just left little to work with without going back to the OT and almost retconning many of the things Johnson did

@Pat Bateman it's literally no different than obi wan and Yoda coming from the prequels to buff up Luke in the OT. Each trilogy has a different set of protagonists, which is fine. The fact that one bloodline cross multiple roles throughout all three trilogies isnt a bad thing.

People laughed at the initial jokes with Chewy and the "chess" game. Then the laughs dwindled. No one laughed when Kylo did the leap onto the huge chain then said, "ow!" It was reminiscent of "Last Jedi"-- horribly timed humor during a dramatic scene that cheapens the scene

People keep saying this but its pretty well established an outline was developed at the start. The problem was RJ threw it out and no-one stopped him. Not having every single point mapped out so its basically paint by numbers is a good thing as it gives the writers and director some room to be creative and bring their own sensibility into it but having an outline with key elements locked is key and letting RJ throw all that out made the TFA largely irrelevant and then caused issues for whoever did the 3rd movie (even of RJ had come back and done it I think he would have struggled as it almost seems like his TLJ was written as the final part not the middle part)

I don't feel the first was wasted, the first movie had to feel familiar and it does that well while leaving some good dangling threads to be explored by others. The problem was with TLJ Rian Johnson decided to throw out the outline rather than take the threads and run with them. He was so wrapped up in his own opinion of himself as a genius that he couldn't see that trying to completely subvert expectations not just from the previous movie but the whole star wars universe was going to cause problems. He has mentioned Empire as his inspiration and yes that does subvert expectations but not to the point where it feels completely different to the previous movie and throws everything that was established out of the window. He almost tried to subvert expectations for the sake of it rather than to enhance the content

He-Man ! Everyone in my theater LOVED IT. They clapped during the opening crawl and it got a standing ovation with everyone cheering and clapping at the end. No one I talked to after said they didn’t like it. Literally my whole theater loved it.

the worst part about the characters is how hard they try to force us to feel like they are all friends. we've never seen them do anything together before.... same with c3po, he's been relegated to random droid in the background in the other movies yet now these people are his friends? jj abrams cant do character connection/development at all.
