Over the weekend, Starlink released the new Starlink Mini dish for just $200 with a $35/month unlimited data plan. But it's only for a handful of countries in Central America - Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador and Columbia.
Yet, in the USA - the only offering is by invitation only to some Residential customers to for $599 for the dish, with a $30/mo 50GB mobile data plan.
Why the different offerings in different markets? Join Chris as his discusses three leading theories..

Colombia is considered South America. We just left there and had switched our account to Colombia. For whatever reason, we just got an email saying our plan price s going up by $20 per month from ~$65 to $85. Meanwhile in Ecuador where we are now prices did not go up and the mini dish isnt yet available for purchase. There are definitely some more changes afoot.

Starlink is competitive with the few local offerings we have for fiber IPs, with better connection than those currenty have. So I'm fine with the regional difference in pricing of Starlink service as long as it is helping continue to build up the infrastructure to give folks in those countries affordable access to Starlink as an IP.

Never going to happen IMO. Or it will be severely limited at that price point. In the States, they need it to be more expensive than terrestrial internet to preserve capacity for the users with no other option than maybe Hughesnet, and it needs to be cheaper than HughesNet to pull those customers away. And surprise, that's basically exactly where it's priced.

I live in Panama and this Starlink mini is a great and more affordable alternative ($35 a month compared to $50 for regular Starlink service with more expensive hardware) especially because not all communities in Panama have fixed-line internet access or even adequate mobile network coverage...especially in remote rural areas with limited connectivity.

It's all the money. If you compare the dollar in those countries to the US and the average income, they are not getting a great deal. And when you look at the cost to build the mini, I have to ask, why are the rest of the systems so expensive. If the cost of service is so low, why is it so high here. And still, no one can answer my question as to how star link will interact with VPN's?

Hosting a VPN? Not possible due to the Carrier Grade NAT.. Now connecting to a VPN hub? Most VPNs have no issue dealing with CGNAT.. I can only think on IPSec/LT2P protocolo that in the past used to be problematic when the public IP is shared as it is with Starlink.

That happens to all industries in America but Americans are not informed. Nearly all new medicines are discovered in America but drugs are sold at 10x, 50x or even 100x higher in America so that Pharma companies can quickly recoup of R&D cost and make good profits. For Rest of World, it is something "good to have" extra so that they can make whatever money they can make in ROW. Drug price for same drug is 50% cheaper in EU, 90% cheaper in China, free in India (because india is allowed to copycat for free), nearly free in Egypt or similar countries. To be fair, ROW do get drugs of same molecules domestically made (not made in US or Canada).

I have the US standard service for $120/month. I also RV about a weel each month from April to October inclusive. As far as I am concerned Musk can keep the mini setup. The $120/month is more than Musk deserves.

@@SPDLTD and your point? Still limited plan. How do you figure $360 for 12 months? You have to have a standard plan or roam plan ($120 or $150/month). The $30 is an add on cost to either plan. Nor can you pause the service. No idea where you are headed with your comparison.

@flipping_for_funds
@flipping_for_funds 14 күн бұрын
@@bradley3549 there are reasons why milk costs more in Alaska and Hawaii. It takes more to get that physical commodity to those locations. It doesn't however cost more to ship Starlink equipment to me or to make that same equipment for me. The increase in price on milk is because of supply and demand and because of the outlying location. The Starlink equipment is made in the same place no matter where it will end up. If they were going to charge more for something, it would make more sense to charge more for the monthly subscription in remote locations but even that would be nonsense because we all are on the face of the Earth with the same satellites orbiting us.

Another hypothesis. Maybe the prices in Developed Countries, such as the US, have be somewhat inflated in order to “subsidised” hardware & plans in the developing world. Starlink Subscribers from Higher Income Countries could absorb these increased costs in a way that those that are in Latin America, as example, can’t. SpaceX wants to grow their customer base so they could be open to a little peter robbing for marketshare
@SPDLTD
@SPDLTD 28 күн бұрын
Or the demand in those undeveloped countries is very low, and thus the satellites sit mostly idle as they cross them, so charging anything is a bonus. Once the sat comes in range of the continental US the load becomes massive.
