Күн бұрын

This episode was filmed 8th September 2022.
A lovely start to the day from our quiet park up on the hill at Randaberg except for the pesky flies!
We take a short drive into Stavanger for a walk around the town in the rain and then, as the weather clears up, decide to take a cruise up Lysefjord to see the legendary Pulpit Rock.
Our next destination is Bergen but we don’t know how far we will get today or how we go about catching a ferry. We join the queue at Mortavika to board the ferry and hope for the best!
At our overnight park up, Carol cooks Italian meatballs with spaghetti as we hear the sad news of Queen Elisabeth II’s passing.

Merry Christmas! I started watching you all beause it is nice to see my curent home country, Norway, through someone else's eyes, but I will be looking forward to the other adventures to come. I have long been thinking of getting myself a small camping van and touring Europe, I have still never seen much of it.

What I remember from my visits in Stavanger, is that there are a lot of second hand shops there. Quite fun to walk around when the weather is good. And I think the statue is Alexander Kielland. A famous writer.

The statue that stood in the middle of the street: In the old cities, the watchmen were public employees who were supposed to watch over peace and order in the streets, and who were supposed to warn of fire. They kept watch at night in a church tower (tower watchmen), walked certain rounds in the streets and called out the time and direction of the wind, usually while singing so-called vektervers.

The tower you visited, Valbergtårnet, was actually built for the Vekter-service. In English they were known as "watchmen", and they were common in English cities as well, until the 1820's.

6:05 We got one of those statues in Trondheim too. It's a nightwatchman. People like that used to walk around the cities shouting the watchman's verse that included the time every hour. "The clock has beaten the eleventh hour" or something to that effect. They lit the oil lamps, warned people about fires, reported the wind direction, and weather, etc... They where poorly paid but essentially did the job of police, fireman, weatherman, newsman, clock etc all at once. And where essential to the smooth running of the cities back in the day. We did have real police during the day, but these people served that role (among many others) during the night. The service started in the 1270s and gradually ended in the various cities in the late 1800s. In Bergen they ended the service in 1874. I'm not quite sure what the last place with that service was. But yeah, it was a low paying and thankless public office.

@@LifeistooshortCK You're welcome. At least they're being remembered. On rare occasions you'll find people reenacting them, fully dressed as one shouting the watchman's verse etc. But yeah, for the most part it's just those statues all over Norway. I'm pretty sure all the major cities has one. I think that the city watch in Trondheim ended in 1873? Not 100% sure. Anyway, they wore red coats and those hats? (The word hat for what we call "lue" just sounds so wrong, as we do have "hat" too but that's a different type of headwear for us...) Anyway, those hats with those flaps over the ears. That morning stars where their weapons (stick with a spiked metal ball), and they carried a lantern. There's a Norwegian insurance company that uses them in their logo. And they've donated statues like that one to multiple cities around the country as a result. Trondheim got ours when we had our jubilee.

The statue is just a nightwatchman. The part that is missing is his light. :) Also the house you saw is the oldest in that area, the rest of the area is lost because a fire, layin flat everything south-east of that house. (as far as i remember the sign, i can check and translate the sign correctly if you want :) ) Sad to see, you did not take a walk around the Old town, a world heritage part of Stavanger. you acutally parked just a few meter from where it starts. :) Than ou for a great video from my town of birth. :) a tip is to also visit Hafrsfjord, Ullandhaug tower and a lot of hidden gems, in and around Stavanger. :)

We went to the top of Pulpit Rock, (Preikestolen), a pleasant hike, not too strenuous - round trip about two - three hours. I like heights but looking over the edge was more than a little disquieting and I could only do it, lying on my stomach. Straight down 2000ft. There must have been well over 100 people up there when went up. Some were sitting dangling their legs over the edge! Beautiful photography from both of you, as usual. re. their pedestrian crossing, no one looks and no one says thank you.

When you're not moving you might try setting out a small dish of warm water with 2 teaspoons sugar, 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar, and several drops of dishwashing liquid soap mixed together. It attracts the bugs and then they drown. Works very well for gnats. It might work for your flying critters.

We had cruised to the Port of Stavanger on one of those large cruise ships from the port of Southampton also stopping at Bergen, Olden and Geiranger.

Looked like a awesome time on the boat trips. I love boat trips, I’m about to cross to Tasmania from the mainland, it’ll take 12 hours so I sail at night. Loved the trip you’ve been doing. Yes was very sad to hear the queen has died, she was amazing lady.

Really great video and amazing boat trip. Quite incredible. Like Lord of the rings scenery. It's so good to see where you are travelling. I like the music at the end ..sounds different. Also you both reminded me of me and husband when we go off in the camper and the little tiffs we have 😄

Hello You two… Thank you for your lovely wlogs. Just a little information about pedestrians her in Norway; they’ve got the forehand in the traffic before the cars. So it’s the driver of the car’s responsibility to stop and crept the lookout before every pedestrian crossing. Don’t know the word in English, but in Norwegian it is VIKEPLIKT. 😁 Thanks again for your videos. Love them! 🤗🎄🤗

They have just given pedestrians primacy in the UK through changes in our highway code. Most people don’t have a clue about the changes and as a result pedestrians are now in even more dangerous 😁👍

When we toured Norway in our van as we got further north (we went to Nordkapp) the Fly's & mosquitoes became worse, I ended up putting some mosquito netting over the vent's, we have three, one for the fridge, heating and cooling area extractor fan, Which was the worst. This solved the problem. We also had a problem when leaving the windows open and fly sheets down as they remained in-between the fly sheets and window making it difficult closing the window fly & Mosquito free, again we just ended up keeping the windows shut. On a positive note we were lucky to have three days of clear sky's and watched the sun go around the sky without setting, very special moment.

Terrific beginning to Sunday morning & of course Christmas 🎄 day with tea 🍵 & toast 😋 & relaxing viewing..Norway once again shows it's great scenery & how a country should be with a population that's far less than here in the UK.the finale was very well edited to take into account the Queen had passed away. Excellent vlog 👌 Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 to you both 👌

We Norwegians know that cars have to stop at crossings, if they don't they can be fined heavly and even risk loosing their driving lisense. The only crossings people in Norway have to stop at is the ones with lights.

16:16 - talking about pedestrians. They always have the right of way. All cars must stop/yield for them even before they start walking into the crosswalk. There is a £500 fine for not stopping for pedestrians.

Hello you two 👋. Another great vlog. I have not been to Stavanger, but it looked very nice. With a bit of sunshine and without rain it would be perfect of course. I visited Bergen and loved it (even with the heavy rain). Unfortunately, I only had one day. It's such a gorgeous city, don't you agree? I have to come back again. Can't wait to see your impressions of Bergen in the next video. Merry Christmas 🧑‍🎄

Hello Karen & Ken. A few years ago I went to Australia and went to the Outback near Kalgoorlie, boy do they have flies. We were told by a local “Don’t swat the flies and kill them. If you do thousands will turn up for the wake” take care, I’ve been to Norway several times on coach holiday trips, and once with my brother, sister-in-law and my nephew in Easter 2000.it was snowing and without sunglasses our eyes were aching when we went by train from Bergen to Flam.

Hi Carol and Ken, i heard of the Queen's death about 10 mins before it was announced as Lady C told the news first. I'd love to have a bacon sandwich with brown sauce now. Wow book's in the telephone box but why i wonder, surely people don't stand and read a book and taking up space for someone who wants to make a call 📞📖 XX ❤️💙 Have a lovely Christmas day.

What a great trip out to pulpit rock. Could you have landed and walked up there if you had wanted to? We found out about the queens death about an hour before we heard about my brother Mick dying 😩. That looked like a great parkup. Thanks guys. Loved it.

The best way to hike to Pulpit Rock is to drive up to the car park then it’s about an hour and a half from there. I think some cruise boats stop for you to hike as well but that must be a very steep climb. Condolences for the loss of your brother ❤️
