We’re staying at a Shukubo, which is a lodging inside a temple. Sanrakuso is located in the mountains of Mt Daisen in Shimane prefecture. We’ll experience Shojin Ryori, which is a type of vegetarian cuisine traditionally served at Japanese Buddhist temples.
We also wake up to a session of meditation called Zazen, as well as a vegetarian breakfast served to us by the chief priest of the temple.

We "accidentally" went to a Buddhist vegetarian restaurant in Nikko once. It was one of the finest meals we ever had. It was very similar to yours. It was where we were introduced to Yuba. Yuba is amazing. It came a number of ways. When we arrived it was about 7.30. Back then we had no idea that in small towns like Nikko many restaurants are closed by 7.30. Our family turned up and they were so friendly and accommodating. They re-opened just for us and we had our first buddhist vegetarian meal. It was amazing. Your video brought back so many happy memories. Thank you.

As a vegetarian, I will say that those meals looked absolutely amazing! I love how they use as much as they can of the vegetables so there is no waste. The snowy view out the window was so pretty. The first time I visited Japan with a group of other American students we spent two days on Koyasan in Wakayama. I can't remember all the food details but I do fondly remember eating a variety of textures and colors of tofu. The monks and student monks (high school) were awesome and we even got to play them in a softball game. Happy memories.

Staying at the temple and shojin ryori must have been a truly incredible experience. As far as I know, "Shojin Ryori" means something like "eat like the monks". Probably my greatest dream would come true if I too could have this experience.

Literally everything in this video is my favorite: the peace, tranquility, and remote beauty of Sanrakuso at the foot of Mt. Daisen; Zazen; and Shojin Ryori. Before I became ill, I'd scheduled a long hike through the Nihon Arupusu (Japanese Alps) which went from one Buddhist temple to another. It was _very_ disappointing to give up my dream trip, but now you've allowed me to have a taste of it through you. Thank you once again, Shinichi and Satoshi, for sharing an amazing experience I could not have otherwise. ❤️❤️

That dinner and breakfast look absolutely delicious, thank you so much for sharing this experience with us! Even if you’re not vegetarian or vegan, I highly recommend anyone visiting Japan in the future to try Shojin Ryori cuisine! I got to try so many different seasonal ingredients, textures and flavours which I would have missed out on otherwise. It introduced me to a lot of traditional Japanese foods and dishes such as a variety of tsukemono pickled vegetables, yuba tofu skin, sesame tofu and nasu dengaku which is grilled eggplant with sweet miso sauce. I enjoyed nasu dengaku so much, I frequently re-create the dish at home now. Even if you can’t stay overnight at a Shukubo temple lodging, Shigetsu restaurant inside the grounds of Tenryu-ji temple in Kyoto is a very accessible place for you to try a delicious Shojin Ryori meal! 😊

This takes me back to a time when I got to eat at a small inn in a mountainous region in Japan! The woman who ran the inn cooked a variety of dishes for us that looked very similar to some of the dishes you all ate here! One thing she cooked was tempura "weeds" from her garden! Some of them looked like the seri, so maybe there was some of that in there that she just called "weeds," but I do think some were just run of the mill garden overgrowth that she 100% cooked up for us... There were also beans that looked like those in the takiawase you two ate, prepared in what appears to be a similar way by my memory, as well as some takikomi gohan that looked a lot like the daisen takikomi gohan you two ate... So. Much. Great. Food - lots of it that you don't necessarily see being featured by foreigners in Japan. Thanks for taking us to places like this! I'm so glad this channel exists! Thanks for sharing great food and interesting places

Excellent visual recording of Daisen Shōjin Ryōri/Japanese Buddhist based vegetarian cuisine at Sanrakusō. Perhaps researching and inquiring about the ingredients and techniques from the chefs as well as finding a more precise, appropriate vocabulary to describe the flavours, textures, aroma, etc. may be more helpful than such comments as interesting, delicious, Oishī. Great introduction to a very specific regional Japanese cuisine.
