Another part of our mammoth European tour down to Croatia. Calling in at Stelvio Pass in Italy. This is the morning we set off down it, after staying in the hotel at the top. Trouble with engines stuttering, brakes not working, tyre pressures all over the place, then having to watch it topple off it's stand at the bottom! Grrrrr

Great video Richy, I have just replaced the stator, cam chain tensioner, battery, oil, replaced the down pipes and bypassed the cat. I went to start it for the second time and my foot slipped off the main stand and I dropped the bike on the ground... ahhhhhhhhhhh right with you there... Jesus

Watched the whole trip and now watched this and I am amazed that no mirrors got broken when bikes fell over when we went my mate and his vfr 800 vtec has/had a fall of some sort every time and always broke a mirror so when he goes now always takes a spare 😂

I love the tip over protection on my Victory Vision touring bike. It keeps the bike from any damage if you drop it and it is easy to lift up again. Thanks for sharing the video's of the pass. I plan on flying to Europe next summer and rent a bike to ride all the great roads there including the Stelvio Pass.

HI Richy, I have watch this video at least 20 times over the past two years. Noting some of the below comments in my opinion you and your mates are probably the most professional and experienced riders I have seen. As a subscriber to your channel and also a fellow biker, I would challenge those who remark on all abilities as riders to watch your other videos. (be interesting to see their video's) I myself have the greatest respect for you guy's doing this and have taken inspiration from your video's when filming my own biking trips. I myself have a similar trip booked next year including a night at the top of Stelvio. May I ask what time in the morning did you set off? Keep up the good work mate, 10/10 for Wildbad............................................................

Thanks Paul. I guess you can't please everybody. We left around 8am that morning. Was nice to have it so empty, and also was nice to have the foggy weather, as we'd ridden up it the day before in glorious sunshine. It added to the mystery of the pass! Cheers for watching, and for you me kind comment

+Paul Griffiths was going to say exactly the same Paul. I've only just discovered these guys vids and certainly some of the newest ones are just about TV documentary quality. I do wonder if some of these so called expert critics actually ride. I for one hope he keeps making the biking vids that help inspire riders to explore and enjoy these great places.

It's a Drift HD Ghost, with their external mic, routed into my helmet, placed just below my mouth. I have mic setting on the lowest setting. Any higher and it is too loud. Video edited with Sony Vegas Movie Studio.

Hi there, can you let me know what time of year was your ride over the Stelvio, I did it last year in September and it couldn't haver looked more different, there was still snow around at the top. And I dropped my bike on one of the hairpins due to coming to a stop because of a bike coming the other way. Nice video though ignore daft comments

Only 7 years + late on this one :) Early FJRs suffered something that was known as 'Altitude Sickness'. Plenty of info on tinterweb. As the altitude rose the bikes performance would suffer. Yamaha remedied the issue and provided upgraded ECUs even out of warranty.

What happened there? Last time i saw this, someone fiddled with a bike parked on a slight banking. Bike was in neutral with the kickstand down, so it moved a bit forward, causing it to tip over.
@sudolea
@sudolea 9 жыл бұрын
Noone fiddled here. The bike just wasn't in its first gear on a slope. You see the rider losen his front brake, and a split second later, the bike's on the ground because it could move forward. First the bike, then the camera, RichyVida :P

The Italian side of Stelvio is pretty crap to ride. Lousy road surface, and normally way too crowded. The comment about being “cut up” is a constant problem most of the time, especially with riders coming down, using the full width of the road to negotiate the hairpins. It’s no fun when you have to stop mid turn because bikes are coming down three or four abreast. If you ride the Stelvio, leave as early as you can, because once the bikes, cyclists and caravans are on the road, you’re screwed.

Hello, Richy. It happens, I think sometimes we just get tired by the effort of crossing this great and difficult passage, we did it with my wide August 2021 with a full loaded bike and we got very tired at the top as well, bike almost fell over on STOP, check out my video if you like, safe roads.

soft tyres and it rolled off them or from under the bike , and in response to other comments here i am 63 yrs old and did my car and bike mechanics course at 15 to 21 prentiss ship, so my although limited amount of riding time i think my background qualifies me as a valid opinion,

No offense but I would never ride with you. Your cornering is so slow, you have no idea where your tire pressure is and didn't account for the temperature, you don't roll the throttle through the corner, and you dropped the bike twice. None of these things are bad for a beginner... it's expected. We have all been there; but this seems like a rather advanced road for a beginner. Your lucky you made it alive. Not very good judgement.
@RichyVida
@RichyVida 9 жыл бұрын
We're far from beginners, the altitude had screwed the tyre pressures - of which I am fully aware of and check religiously, the altitude had also affected the brake pressures, and the engines. So taking our time coming down one of the most dangerous roads in the world, having already ridden over 4000 miles through Europe before this rendered us quite jaded. No offence but, I wouldn't want you riding anywhere with us if you can't see that we were simply being cautious.
@SchecterMongoose
@SchecterMongoose 9 жыл бұрын
RichyVida We have season and altitude changes where I live as well. It was your throttle control that suggested you were a novice. I can't believe someone with a lot of km of seat time would not roll on through the corners. A cautious person would use proper technique.
@Ozmeister666
@Ozmeister666 9 жыл бұрын
Mongoose Motovlog I wouldn't even call them out on throttle control. In these conditions (cold, snow everywhere etc...) you just cant ride properly. But these low speed falls clearly show a certain lack of control over the bike.
@ExtremeDeathman
@ExtremeDeathman 8 жыл бұрын
+RichyVida I rode the Stelvio on modern and old bikes. The altitude doesn't change your tyre pressure much and your brakes aren't really influenced by it as well. If your brakes didn't work properly on the way down, I'd say fading. Or a bad combnation of brake disc material and brake blocks. Also, your the first one to say the altitude inluences the engine on such modern bikes. You got fuel injection, ECU and V-Tec. The VFR800 is one of the bikes that is least likely to be influenced by altitudes up to 3300m (I know that is above the Stelvio).What I think +Mongoose Motovlog meant was, you're beginners in the Alps. And I have to agree with him. You're cornering technique is absolutely wrong on mountain passes. You cut the corners way too early, and you cut left handed ones which you shouldn't at all. Especially on the Stelvio.But nevertheless, everybody has to learn and I saw seasoned veterans fall on Stelvio. I hope the damage was minimal and you enjoyed the rest of the trip. Your audio and video is quite good and it's nice to see Stelvio in near winter condition.

+Mongoose Motovlog Well, Mr Mongoose, I have just checked out one of you v logs after reading your comments. I thought you must be a pretty good rider and v logger after noting your advice/criticisms here. I'm afraid the reality is that you videos are very poor. Your attitude towards other road users and other people in general if your comments here are anything to go by is appalling. You have a very long way to go to get anywhere near the quality, professionalism and entertainment value of Rich's v logs. You could learn a lot from Rich's friendly and honest approach.
