@@colinmagnier1232 im my humble opinion, and how i was taught, you should blow out all the air in your lungs. However you should do it as a long consistent breath out, not just let it all out in one short burst. But when you go to take another breath, yes your lungs should be empty.

really wish i had been taught "how to be comfortable in the water" as a kid. in my perspective that's the most important thing.

@@syifaasyazaa2744 the best thing to do is practice getting comfortable floating in a shallow pool before learning how to tread water. Yup just did a full lap earlier, I actually practiced early most in the sea and it was easier to float in saltwater, thanks for all the help, even was able to tread vertically on the pool today though not for very long.

I guess what I’ve been doing is trying to keep my head and SHOULDERS above water and I kept thinking that’s what you were supposed to do and when my shoulders went under water, I felt like I was sinking so I started to panic but this video showed that I’ve been doing it right all along. I definitely still NEED A LOT OF PRACTICE lol

The main problem I’ve experienced with floating on the surface of the water is understanding that what you think of as a straight body is not straight when you are in water. The pelvis needs to be pointed into the air and keeping a semi-tight core helps.

I know the feeling. I've been swimming for 20 years but I can only tread water for a short time. I lack the coordination for the egg beater technique so I use the breaststroke kick which is less efficient.

Comfort is important. Your body movement in water is key, and the more comfortable you are the less tense you are, the easier it will be. Remember, its not about fast or hard, its about efficient. Small/Short and Choppy movements wont displace a lot of water and you will expel a lot of energy that way, longer smooth motions will go a longer way to displace more water and you wont be exhausted in a minute or two.

What's hard isn't breathing, it's really just the movements of the legs. For me personally, it's hard to focus on moving my legs correctly while also syncing my hands and arms AND my breathing. Loved the video nonetheless, it made sense, unlike many.

LavaOreSheep yeah, I definitely understand. It’s having the coordination to move the arms and legs at the same time. However, in my latest video on treading, you can still tread with isolation just the legs or just the arms. Treading is more about floating than actually treading and being perfectly okay with sinking a little bit until you find your internal buoyancy. Once you’ve established that, you just move your arms and legs to feel the water and gently support yourself a little higher. Moving your legs is not where you get your most of the lift from since you will get very tired and it’s not as efficient 🙌🏽🏊🏼‍♂️ -Coach M

Not really because I don’t have much tension in my body. The only time it is tiring is having to move your legs and arms fast to lift your body out of the water as they do in water polo. But to just tread to stay in place you feel the water with slight resistance. The harder you work, the more resistance you create. I am finding myself commenting on every tutorial of yours. Seriously. I'm a beginner and have completed learning freestyle in a month and gaining a little bit of stamina. Now, I want to be able to do breaststroke, swim underwater, come to the surface, flip, and tread. I've been consuming a lot of content for these both on reddit and other KZfaq channels. I've found your content to be the best. You tell many things others simply don't very systematically and it's VERY EASY to just pick up your entire video and practice it in the pool the next day. So, thanks a lot!

Love this video! and it explains the steps really well. Whenever i've asked people before how to tread water the usual response is "it's easy! just move your legs" - which isn't very helpful when you're learning. I love floating like shown in step 1 of finding bouyancy and really comfortable with that. Floating on my back I find difficult at the moment as I tend to panic i'll go underwater when I feel myself turning onto my back and my legs lifting towards the surface, which obviously doesn't help, so I think that just needs practice then I can move onto learning to actually tread water.

Floating on your back is the most easiest way for me. If you practice in the shallow end , you'll learn it. It is the least tiring for me too ..

I've been watching all your videos in the past 6 months. Great tips. I have to laugh about treading water. I have no problem treading water. I don't have to move my legs around, just my arms. I might win a treading contest one day!😂🤣😂🤣 It must be the extra fat I carry!

Hi, we’re you able to get PADI certified? I’m working towards the same goals of getting scuba certified as well. So far, I can do the swimming portion but can’t properly tread water yet. I tried sculling with my hands and arms while doing the egg beater with my legs but for some reason, I can’t stay afloat above water and I keep sinking. Therefore, am I missing something? It’s weird because I can float above water for over 10 mins on my back but can’t tread water yet.

I think the biggest part is to keep air in your lungs which I've never done while treading water but instinctively done while floating on my back.

Been trying it and had some progress, just need to control the fear of drowning so I can be more relaxed when in deep parts.

No need to fear because you know that to prevent drowning just go to a horizontal position and glide (swim) towards the wall. Here what helped me. I would push off on my back from the wall, then, I would reversed my position, like you are doing a sit-up, now I’m swimming on my front, towards the wall. In between this transition, you momentarily do tread water for a brief moment as you roll forward. This is a great exercise/skill to learn. This help you obtain good body control in the water while incorporating treading

Gaining 50 lbs helped a lot. My students like doing the ball float. Even the muscular men usually can float in that position.

Boy was I lucky,, I, m glad I learnt how to relax in the water as a kid in the local community baths. never give a thought, just started to tread without thinking copying our pe teacher,, so, that's the key,, Don, t expect major results,, its a natural development,, just flay your limbs to feel your buoyancy begin working, the rest comes with time,,

I like to scull and alternate between scissor kick and frog kick, drawing me knees up close to my body after each kick. Relaxed, and slow/low energy kicks keep me afloat all day

As you get more comfortable with sculling, the coordination of egg beater and/or breaststroke kick will naturally progress through your practice. Quick question please. I started to learn with some instructors about a month ago. Kicking & the belly up and down exercises seem fine but I still have problems treading as I seem to go down too easily 🥲. I've got a question... The shallowest part of the pool where I go is 1.82 and I'm 1.76... Is this a problem and do you thinki should start with a smaller pool where I can get to stand at any point whilst I learn to tread?. Thanks

I find egg-beater challenging and rather do the Breaststroke kick with Breaststroke arms downwards. How might You recommend transitioning to egg beater + sculling comfortably or is it necessary seeing as I do the Breaststroke one? Is one more efficient than the other?

Nice vid. I'm trying to get my siblings brother and sister to know how to swim, but getting them to know how to tread water would be a better start. When I started learning to tread water i tried a few techniques but I believe I caught on to the frog kick best to stay afloat. I tried the eggbeater but didn't feel that comfortable and started to sink. Also, I want to learn how to float on my back better too. Thanks for the tips. ;)

Very interesting, this breathing technique I do naturally and wanted to see if it was actually a thing I can just float without moving but I am overweight so that probably helps lol

I scull with my hands but I use a scissor type kick. I'm 67 years old and have hip arthritis. The scissor allows me to tread an hour at a time without needing to flex that bad hip outwardly.

Best thing I did was to get comfortable being underwater and learning how long I can stay under without drowning (knowing my lung capacity). Then learning how to swim underwater to the wall when bailing. Once I was comfortable knowing my limits and knowing how to bail, it was easier practicing treading and anything else really

I always knew how to swim in straight line back and forth, it's just staying afloat was a little tricky. I would be able to do it but not for a long time, an I think that was because bad technique and moving a little too fast. Trying to get my best at swimming and all kinds of techniques.

I'm learning to swim and treading water works a little better for me with the flutter kick. I haven't gotten the egg beater kick down yet...👍🏽

conscience if you kick fast, you’re tense, and not relaxed. This will make you sink further! It’s all about finding your buoyancy and feeling the water to sit up higher. Try this Skills in a shallow pool especially just getting comfortable on your back.👍🏼 You’ve got this! -Coach Mandy 🏊🏼‍♂️

Hi Vanessa. I totally understand where you’re coming from lol. It’s actually more about floating than actually treading. Once you find your buoyancy and are comfortable knowing your body will sink and bob up and down the rest is easy to understand. I would advise to spend your time in the cannonball formation demonstrated at the beginning of the video and just be suspended on the water so you feel your natural buoyancy. From there, spend time getting really comfortable floating in all positions - especially on your back. That is the first step before going into full tread mode. Hi! I’m new to your channel and I appreciate this video. I’m not new to swimming but for the life of me I just cannot conquer my fear on deep water (deep end of the pool). I’ve taken deep water swimming lessons but it didn’t help. The threading technique here, can i practice this on shallow water? At least 5 feet of water?

Hi Liv, welcome to the channel! Yes, you can definitely practice treading water in shallow water which is preferred first to get used to the movement. I grew up far out on the Mojave desert, there was never any water to swim in. Town was a long way away. When ever I got to a lake or something as a kid water was for playing in not really learning anything and it was pretty short lived anyway as we wouldn't stay long.

I have always used the scissor kick. The egg beater is too much wobblying. The scissor kick keeps you in a sleek mode, similar to fish. Sleek. Along with your arms and hands cupped in a constant sideways figure 8 motion.

Lori Jondron yes, that is another great alternative shown in one of the older videos on the channel. It looks more like a vertical flutter kick but can be harder for those learning how to stabilize especially for guys who have lower profiles. Glad the scissor kick works! 👏🏼😄 -Coach Mandy

I used to do the T pose in the deep end to help train my lungs to carry more air. It’s not easy because you can’t exhale all or most of your air or you’ll sink because you’re just floating there with no movement at all.

im going to try this after being inspired by a great pool day with my grandkids who can now swim like fishes after a solid year of private lessons. I love the pool, but I use a pool noodle to support my kicking and arms. I have had lessons in the past, but I have never been really comfortable in the water. I hate getting my head wet, but will try harder to overcome it.It's never too late, right?
