Stetson Open Road 6X vs. Royal Deluxe

When I was looking into getting a Stetson I came across a conundrum, and that was what is the difference between the 6X and the Royal Deluxe. I did a little research beforehand but nothing is better than hands on experience. So I have both the 6X and the Royal Deluxe, and I am going to explain the differences that I notice.

Love the Open Road Stetson hats. I went out and bought me 2 Stetsons, one in the Carabu 6x and one in the Royal Deluxe Sage Green, there great !!!!

Great video. Just bought my first Open Road, a 6X Silverbelly. Love the Caribou color. I wish insaw this video first because i feel that the Royal Deluxe may be the way to go for me.

Great way to word it! Both versions of the Open Road are mostly considered more of a "dress hat" now, but the Royal Deluxe would be closer to a fedora, smooth comfortable and soft. The 6x is more like a western hat, little stiffer but will hold up better in the elements as you put it. By the way the Oval refers to the oval shape, there is R or regular oval and L which is Long oval. Size can be affected depending the the shape of your head.

I own both and personally prefer the 6x but the 10x straw version is my favorite open road.

Nice review! Well done. Concise and to the point. No BS. Thanks! I might suggest that if you want that Royal Deluxe to maintain its shape, it is best not to hold it by the crown when you handle it. But it's your lid so you do you.

I tend to handle it like a baby normally. I had to be a little “rough” in the video, as you can imagine. It’s sitting nice and gently in the box now though!

6x is “western felt” whereas the Royal Deluxe is the same type of felt used in dressier hats like the Whippet , Stratoliner, etc.

You helped me decide which hat to get , it’s my first open road hat I’ve been wearing stetson Cowboy hats for the past 28 years due to a band I play in , but I have decided to get the deluxe a more relaxed feel and my head is between a 7 and a 6 7/8 so I think it will work out better not to mention that I like the leather band better than the black band.

I bought the open road in caribou Grey, then the Los Alamos straw for summers, the Yancy Gamblers flat brim in phantom Grey, then last a wool fedora, the Markham in jet black. Got my head covered for all seasons now and have that stetson confidence they say happens when underneath one.. live now in west state Colorado and all hats worn with the country flare in our state.

The Stetson Open Road is so stylish because it's short, concise and neat. It has a very sharp, clean look, as opposed to the big, wavy cowboy hats which I think are too sprawled out and messy looking. A good, classic "Trooper hat" like a Stetson Open Road makes for a very handsome, clean-cut look.

The distinction between Stetson's rabbit and beaver fur felts is the more beaver content the more water resistant the hat becomes. Also beaver felts can be made thinner than rabbit only felts. But except for select expensive models, most modern Stetson hats don't contain any beaver, they are all rabbit. That is good because I collect vintage Stetson hats from the 1950s which were made from beavers that died over 60 years ago. But I don't want today's beavers killed for my hats, so I wouldn't buy a new hat today that contains beaver. The main difference between the hats in this video is Stetson added more of their stiffener chemicals to the 6X Open Road than the Royal Deluxe during the manufacturing process.

As long as you don’t wipe out the beavers, which we are never going to do, I say harvest beavers as well as rabbits. Rabbits are not any less or more expendable than beavers. Animals can serve our needs. We just need to manage the harvest.

@@sheldonberg125 Actually, beavers are an important part of the ecosystem because of the dams they construct. I saw a documentary about ranchers whose land was dried out and couldn't support their cattle. Researchers concluded it was due to earlier generations killing all the beavers. So they reintroduced beavers and that captured the water so that it has come back, including other wild animals. Rabbits can't do that.

@@glassmw9823 Sounds good, but I don't want any living beavers killed to make my hats. First off, beaver hats are way too expensive today. But more importantly, there is no benefit of beaver because I never wear my felt hats in the rain. I have rain hats for when it is raining. Back in the old days hats were inexpensive and people took mass transportation because they didn't have cars, so they went through a lot of hats. The ones that weren't used in the rain can still be like new 100 years later.

yooo! so here’s a story :) this happened yesterday and today! i work for a concert venue in Houston, Tx and an artist named Stephen Sanchez performed an outdoor show yesterday. Sold Out show! it rained and it was cold, but that didn’t stop Stephen Sanchez from wearing a snazzy cowboy while he performed, and he bought it specifically because he was performing in Tx. today i had to back to work to clean up and set up for a private event. and well, i found the hat’s box. it had the plastic and the foam. it was a a black Stetson Open Road Royal Deluxe size 7. it looked soooo amazing, so i had to find out! and well, i’m here now :) but i can’t afford it. thank you still! just in case i “treat yo’ self” one day 🤙🏼 yeehaw

I think the Akubra Campdraft is better. It's the exact same dimensions, nicer felt and less stiff than the cardboard feel of the thin 6x. Also comes open crown, usually in stock and half the price.

You have the best comparison vid on "6x, vs royal deluxe" that I have found. I want to buy one. 30 yrs ago, I regularly wore cowboy hats. I wish to get back in that style, however, more nights out, than working today. My dilemma, like yours between 7 and 7 1/8, Iam a 7 3/8 or 7 1/2. I wish to wear up, or down but prefer a hardier hat. Will the 6x snap up or down if the 7.5 is on the bigger side? Or should I 7 3/8 a royal drluxe?

The regular open road is very stiff, and it would be difficult to shape without steaming it. The royal deluxe you can shape the brim, but lose the rigidity of the regular deluxe.

I can’t tell if you’re calling it the “world deluxe “ or “royal deluxe”? I know it’s called the “Royal Deluxe” because that’s the hat I bought.

It’s a crossover not a cowboy hat, the crown is the cowboy part

Oval R is ""Round Oval" rather than Oval L which is "Long Oval". Long Oval is a longer oval shape, compared to the rounder oval shape. Traditional cowboy hats are available in both.

Yeah all great but Stetson is it so hard to get these hats to Stetson Europe. Well I guess yea. Since there are literally none of these hats available. Wish I could get an open road. Next time I’m in America lol buy one for sure. Once they let un jabbed tourists in.

Back in the day, Akubra used to make 'the Open Road' hats under licence for Stetson for the Down Under market. Today, their 'Campdraft' is the equivalent of the 'Open Road.'

Not true! I have $1500-2500 hats and all the makers say to hold and handle by the crown, not the brim.

This is a clinic on how not to handle a $250 hat. Unless you want your greasy fingerprints all over your beautiful hat...only handle it by the edges. Comfortability...ha ha. Trivia...Royal Deluxe is better quality felt than the six x.

This is a working man’s hat, not a fashion accessory. It’s meant to be worn, outside, in the sun, rain, snow, dust. You don’t have to baby it.
