Love it. Glad you talked me out of the Premier a few years ago. Everyone’s different, but I have really come to favor the regular Stratoliner in caribou. Good with a suit for daily work, but just informal enough to use on casual occasions too. I removed the pin but will reinstall it for any extra-dressy occasions. I have and love the Stetson Whippet, Stetson Bogie Beaver, and Akubra Stylemaster - but I’m wearing the Strat every day, it works for every occasion. An exception will probably be for very hot weather, will switch to Panama.

Great video! I saw Venus when I took Buddy out a little while ago. Then I spent a half hour whistling to a bird 🪶in the trees 🌳🌿that likes to whistle to me when I’m out with Buddy really late. Best thing ever. 👍☮️🌞🎸🚵‍♀️🐾💕

Awesome video. I have about 10 or so Strats and Open Roads, and I prefer not to get into what is the “better” fur. The deluxe ORs are a definitely softer fur than the 6Xs, but both feel great to me. I wear mine for style, and I love both equally, and I also love the Strats. Overall, the Stratoliner fits my head better. Like you say, big-headed people might have issues with the fit of the Open Road. I do see inconsistencies between the firmness of felt between Stratoliners that I cannot pinpoint.

Thanks for the rundown. It has changed my mind on the Stratoliner Premier. I like the high crown with a cattleman crease but he 2.5" brim is too small. I had found a Stroliner Premier in 7 3/4 that I was going to size down to 7 1/2. I will most likely go with another Open Road Royal Deluxe. I have steamed my Open Road RD and StratolIner and they seem to take steam OK.

Yeah, it’s a crap shoot, they’re hot and cold, just be careful, steam a little as possible, only when necessary

I am one of those who contact you to buy one. Stetson Stratoliner is a hat that has amazed me since I was little, but you can only buy it in the US and I'm from Europe. The second problem I have is precisely the great variety there is. Premier, Special edition, open road... even on the website there is another type of fedora stratoliner (Pure Stratoliner) with a pin that says 1865 instead of the famous plane, and I no longer know which one I want 😭😭😭 Please check your email! I am very interested in buying one of them and you are my only hope 😉

Kevin, first I got trapped in the rain in my royal deluxe open road… and the brim will curl up when it dries a little more than I wanted, and secondly I would LOVE to see your thoughts and review of a Stetson/filson eagle ranch hat which is basically a distressed open road with a three inch brim.

I collect vintage Stetson hats from the 1950s and have quite a few Open Roads from that period. Back then Stetson had some standardized levels. Number 1 quality was the lowest, then 3x which had beaver, then Royal Deluxe which was applied to better fedora type hats, then 7x clear beaver quality, and then One-Hundred which was top of the line 100% beaver. The levels changed over time, but that is the basic scheme. The Stetson hats with names like Open Road, Stratoliner, and Whippet were used with the lower end 3x versions for name appeal. Once you got the same hat that used better felt and cost more Stetson dropped the name. So the Royal Deluxe, 7x, or One-Hundred versions of the Open Road weren't called Open Roads. Most of them came with wind trolleys, they can all be shaped easily by hand, and the brim can be worn up or down. Originally, the Stratoliner was the lowest end Open Road, some with a slightly shorter brim. Some or all didn't have a liner. It's name stems from it being pliable and it came squeezed in a special silver hat box that was thin so it could fit in the overhead bin. Stetson also put a decorative Stratoliner pin on the hat band. It was an early form of products marketing each other. The reason I really like 1950s hats is because they have a higher crown, look better, and don't touch your scalp. I don't understand why Kevin is disrespecting them so much. Once you get a 2 3/4 inch brim too short a crown is unbalanced.

I dont think he means disrespect to the high crown. He just wants people to know that its an authentic, high crown hat so don't order it unless that's what you want. My guess is that people are surprised by how high it is when it arrives in the mail and he's sick of hearing about it lol

Collect and wear what you like. Not everyone wants a 5 inch high crown and have the look of a 40's gangster. Don't disparage others tastes in fedora's.

@@dkstott29 Funny how you turned a comment about me liking higher crowns into me disparaging "others tastes in fedora's". Sure sounds like you are trying to disparage higher crowns by labeling them as "40's gangster" when the truth is Stetson made higher crowns in the old days and everybody, not just the gangsters, wore higher crowns. Either you are in your 80s or you have gotten your stereotypes from movies. Turns out higher crowns use the air pocket to regulate the cold and the heat while dispersing moisture. The shorter the crown the less the effect. Crown height isn't just for style. By the 1960s most people had gotten vehicles and stopped using public transportation. It was also the advent of lower rooflines so crowns were shortened to better fit in 1960s cars. Plus everything in the 1960s went short from hair, to inseams, to miniskirts, and hat crowns and brims.

@@drwisdom1 I have nothing against higher crowns in hats. But it's not a style that I or others choose to wear. The majority of new hat wearers want the lower crown. Stetson and other hat manufacturers understand what the currrent public wants. It's very similar to wide newsboys caps. Only a select few want or wear them. Kevin will confirm that the trend is for slimmer and slimmer caps .

@@dkstott29 The proper crown height isn't based on trending styles. For balance if the brim is wider the crown needs to be taller and shorter when the brim is smaller. The other controlling factor is face shape. People with rounder faces look better with shorter crowns while people with longer faces look better with taller crowns. I always get manual transmissions. Where I used to live my dealership didn't stock any and I had to always order my car. My salesman said they didn't stock them because nobody buys them. We moved across the country so changed dealerships. They had quite a few manuals on the lot so I comment to my salesman that is nice. He says they are their fastest sellers, sell for a premium. and they try to get as many as VW will give them. Turns out my old dealership threw away sales because they didn't stock manuals, not because the public wouldn't buy manuals.

Kevin, thanks for this. I wonder if you could do a video looking at the differences in Stetson's brown colors? I don't have a shop near enough to check them out in person, and it's impossible to tell from product photos whether I should be getting cognac, walnut, cordova, or chocolate!

A regular STRATOLINER will not go from teardrop to cattleman. It’s too shallow. Not unless it’s the premier STRATOLINER which comes open w no shape, that’s a totally different hat , it’ll work with a premier strat but not the regular teardrop ones. It’s impossible. Cattleman requires the most depth, u need a special deep, blocky crown to handle a decent cattleman

I want to ask a question: So, I have an old 100% wool hat from my grandfather, I think it's a Bollman hat, It only says Trail Boss on the inside but I can't really find much information on the hat. It's very very worn, but still in good shape, though the brim needs to be reshaped. I was wondering if there is ANY information on this type of hat as I can't seem to find too many of them, and if it can really be reshaped, as I've never reshaped an old wool hat, or any hat for that matter. Thank you.

They’re available if a shop orders them but they’re not on the website anymore. Stetson got hit hard by the pandemic, they’re just not shipping much yet. Wait until fall and you might see a shop w some, but it might be some time before you do.

Light rain could make it lose its shape a tiny bit, as for steaming, I’ve never steamed one. As a rule, Steam as little as possible, or not at all, don’t take. Chance unless it’s needed, or vital to steam it, I don’t paint my guitars or restore them, I will modify them sometimes but I’ll let a pro tech do it..the only thing I do is change strings, or tubes in my amp, maybe I’ll adjust the truss rod, that’s as far as I’ll go

Nobody has any now, since the pandemic began Stetson stopped shipping (2-3 years of no hats) They cost about $260 for premier and $210 for regular stratoliners but there’s nothing now, they’re unavailable, probably until next September

Kevin - Hey! I am considering buying for 2023 the “Pure Stratoliner”. Couple questions. Are they true to size? Does “phantom grey” in your experience go with khaki and black? Can you crush them? With their pure beaver can you wear them in the rain or snow? Lastly, are you going to get them at JJ’s anytime soon? Would much rather give you the business. Thank you as always my friend!

Not coming to jjs soon, definitely no for rain,big no. Open roads and stratoliners make bad rain hats, expect the brim to get wavy, I’d avoid rain. They run true to size ..in general. but they all run differently, each hat runs a bit differently, some run large , some don’t.. no way to control that,but in general they run true to size,yes. Not at all crushable, that’s not a crushable hat, it’s kind of thin and light, but not at all crushable.

What are the benefits of the Stetson Pure Beaver line over a regular Stratoliner? Is the Pure Beaver worth 2x the cost of a regular Stratoliner? Would the Pure Beaver hold up better in the rain? I'm just not sure whether the benefits are diminishing returns or truly worth the cost.

I’m sure it will fail just as easily in the rain, these hats are not meant for rain. They never claimed to, and they are not going to hold up in the rain. I’d suggest so,e thing by Akubra, or a Thick western hat like Skyline,Shasta,etc.. none of the stratoliners will do well in rain at all. The answer is no. It will feel softer,more velvety in finish..the performance won’t change.. it’s dress felt, not western felt. I’d strongly suggest avoiding rain in any stratoliner, Temple,Open Road,Whippet or any of that stuff. Buy a Rain hat or use one of your old hats for rain, the pure beaver Strat will not handle rain.

@HATS & GUITARS Honestly, I'm not even worried about the rain. I'm worried about high humidity/foggy days or even perspiration. You know how it is NYC, when the city can just be a cloud of fog. Is that enough humidity to ruin one of these hats? I really like the style, fit, look, colors, and price of the Stratoliners, but if you're saying the Pure Beaver is basically the same construction at 2x the price with colors I'm not particularly fond of, then what's the point? It just sounds like there is hardly much practical benefit, only clout to gain. Also, thank you for always taking the time to reply to comments and answer questions. I definitely want to gain as much knowledge as possible without going through the experience of wasting money to gain it. Your channel has helped a ton with that.

I grew up on a large cattle ranch. My entire family were ranchers and wore only Stetson and resistol cowboy hats every day. Go with the stiffer hat, they're much tougher, and can take rain and steam for shaping. I'm very familiar with felt hats and straws. Hats that are too soft are regarded as much lower quality to actual cowboys who wear them daily for work and dress

I have a friend who works for Hatco-Stetson. He told me that the Premier Stratoliner has been discontinued. He's hoping that the 2023 catalog will have an open fedora to replace it.

A lot of hats are discontinued and not in the catalog, but hat shops can still order them if they want to, as long as they order enough.. there are a lot of older models like that..hats that are still in ships that aren’t in the catalog..like the Selby, the Chatham,the premiere.. so,e shops order them every year for decades, Hatco will still supply them if you order them, but they don’t stock them

Kevin, is Stetson still making the Saxon? They don’t even have it on the official Stetson site.

Yes, they still make the Saxon (2” brim) and the Selby,(1 7/8” brim without pinches) but it’s not a catalog hat, it’s only available to shops if they order them. We can order it,and they’ll make them up for us.. but it’s considered an old style, like the Selby. Or the Chatham, which is a whippet with a raw edge, no binding. These are hats that are not in the line but shop owners can still order a run of them.

I will watch again, but it seems like the quality of most of these hats do not lend themselves to the weather or steaming I do not see a hat that would hold up to any real life wear or have hats just become just a fashion references to hats of days gone by that could be used and abused. just curious
