I rarely comment on videos but felt the need to do so here. I've watched several of your videos and stopped two minutes in on this one to comment and subscribe to your channel. You cover each step and do a great job explaining why you're using the tool and how to properly work each step. Other videos, they just jump right in and don't do nearly as good as you do explaining. Thank you and keep up the great work!

Fixing, assembling and making things all my life, now 69. Used a power drill also as my screwdriver for the last ten or more years. One year ago I picked up a Makita impact driver with two batteries. I like my tools, but I never had a tool that I liked so much or that became so important to me so fast. A bit embarrassed that I stubbornly held onto my old ways for so long. Great video Steve. Lots of good stuff to learn from you.

Yep, if only I'd watched this a week ago before installing some hinges. Oh well, it's a painted door at least so the hole disappeared pretty easily with some filler. As long as no one lays on the bathroom floor to inspect my work I should be good.

I literally was thinking about buying another drill, because my black and decker sucks compared to my ryobi, and I need to to avoid constantly switching between drill bits and driver bits. Lo and behold, my ryobi kit came with an impact driver. I always assumed it was only for more powerful difficult to drive things. I had no idea you could use it for basic screws. Now I don't need another drill!!! You saved me time and money!

I get it now, an impact driver isn't just a handicapped power drill :) You left out 2 amazing details about that DeWalt bit holder: you can grip the "neck" while starting out instead of holding the screw like you were in the video (which can lead to nasty metal splinters) and you can even slip that neck over smaller screws that tend to fly sideways when you push on them so they can't escape! I didn't realise either of those features and am so glad I invested in a slightly more expensive DeWalt one that has that.

I enjoyed your video. BUT......I drill wood with my 1/4" impac. I use drill bits with a hex shank. It works great. I just take my time. I am not comfortable drilling metal with this arrangement but never had an issue with wood. It's no that I don't have a cordless drill, but I leave the impac in the garage and the two cordless drills in the house. If I have a big job, then I use both drills and the impac. For years I only used an 1/2" air operated impac wrench for automotive work. After watching numerous videos I learned how useful a cordless, airless impac wrench was for woodworking. Amazing. Barry

Steve, if you haven't done so already I suggest you approach stores like Home Depot or Menards or possibly a marketing firm and offer your videos for in-store display either with small screens mounted in various departments or possibly a QR Reader sign linking a customer's smart phone to a video link for various departments like paint, sand paper, drill bits, screws etc. A while back I saw your video on staining and thought this could really help save someone from having to make ten trips to the store because you suggest all the things one might need for successful staining, thus they can be reminded of all the things they might need or remember they have before heading home and having to come back.

I recently discovered the joy of using an impact driver! I got a drill/impact combo when the drill I went for was sold out. My wife noticed the combo pack was on sale, so for ten dollars more than the drill alone; I got both! Even still, I had no intention of driving screws with the impact, but got so frustrated with Phillips bit jumping out when the screws were close to tight that I grabbed the impact. After that first screw, I couln't believe what I had been missing! I wish I had gotten one years ago.

Drill Tip... When installing trim work and you need a bigger fastener than a brad, i.e., 4d or 6d finishing nails, just cut the head off of the size nail you're using and chuck it into your drill. This spreads the wood more than removing any so you get a good tight fit without splitting.

Steve you have some very good videos. Being a man I rarely bother to read owners manuals even more so on things I have been using for 50 years The Point: I did read my Porter Cable drill manual On day out of a fit of boredom. I learned that Porter Cable says NOT to tighten the drill bit by squeezing the trigger rather tighten only by hand. The trigger mode may damage the chuck. Keep up the great videos

Like a few I see here I didn't learn anything this go round. But, it was a few years ago you were talking about your impact driver and because of a project coming up and perhaps a sale, maybe it was a few dollars more since I was buying a battery, I don't remember but I bought an impact driver. I too was already married to Ryobi and it's been a dream to use. Being very experienced with driving in screws with a cordless drill I was surprised most at how much better inexperienced employ's did with the impact driver. Even my wife, when we added an addition to our back wood deck, worked like a pro. Great tool.

If anyone watching this is just getting into their 1st drill and/or impact driver, I highly highly recommend getting both in a kit! Buying one or the other with 2 batteries and a charger and then buying the 2nd one later as a bare tool usually cost you so much more $. If you need to wait a little longer to save up money and buy both in the kit, it is SO worth it. Good luck

I have that set. It's great! Definitely do pilot holes when drilling big holes. If you don't have an awl to make a quick divot, a quick tap with a smaller bit or a screwdriver works too. A drill and impact driver is very useful around the house for many things. For my drill, I only use 2 settings: lowest on the clutch and gear 1 for driving screws and highest clutch and gear 2 for drilling.

For those who have a hammer drill, the hammer drill setting will be very useful in hard wood and when driving screws threw knots. I suggest the use of square drive, hex or Torx head. Philips heads are a real pain most of the time and cost the same as the other head configuration.
