I appreciate your videos! In 1956, when I took 8th grade Home-Ec, I was introduced to potato peelers, cutting boards, and measuring cups and spoons. When I got home from school and told Mama about them, she rolled her eyes. She had never heard of such. She used knives for cutting up potatoes or whatever, and kept everything in her hands to do the job and never cut her hands. When it’s time to measure something, out comes the coffee cup or the teaspoon and tablespoon from the silverware drawer. Her cakes, etc., were delicious! Weeks later, when we were shown how to sew an apron, my teacher gave us a list of supplies to get. When Mama saw the list, she said what in the world are straight pins?!?! She made our clothes and never, ever had a straight pin! She got out the silverware to place on top of the pattern (made from paper bags or newspaper) and placed that on top of the fabric and cut out whatever she was making, Like Mama, I use a knife to cut up everything, but I am modern and use measuring cups and spoons, straight pins, purchased patterns, but mostly I buy readymade clothes. Oh, I forgot to tell you that the sewing list had a hemming gauge on the list, and again, Mama rolled her eyes!

Pat fountain, Im going through the old videos trying to catch up… I read your comment and I have to say it needs to go into a history book! Its wonderful! I quilt and made my living doing upholstery draperies etc. point being, when I quit working I took up quilting and just kind of always did my thing. I made do or just kind of did it, without thinking about it. Then I learned about the “quilt police” lol Hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Start with diced celery and onion with the butter. When it’s cooked, add potato chunks, cover with water. Cook till soft. Then add a can of evaporated milk or whole milk. Best potato soup EVER! You can blend it if you like it smooth, or leave chunky.

Omg’sh, I was just watching one of your old videos that popped up, and I haven’t ever had stewed potatoes before, but I’ve heard ppl on here talking about them, so I’ve wondered! Lol I can confirm that no one that I’ve ever seen has cooked them this way and called them anything different either, well maybe boiled potatoes, but we’d drain off the juice..lol I do make my potato soup this way though. I start by covering the potatoes with water, and a stick of butter..lol Oh, finely diced onions too. Then I add half & half, and salt/pepper to taste, and mash just a few. I like my potato soup simple, because I want it to taste like my mom’s and Grandma’s did.:) But I’m definitely trying your stewed potatoes now, Leslie!! Yum! Thanks so much for solving this lifelong dilemma for me.:) lol God Bless!!🙏🏼🌻👍

Now I’m going to have to make some of these. Love me some stewed potatoes! BTW... I do t like vegetable peelers either. Always use a knife...Something I’ve done is maybe even peel the potatoes a little thicker than you need to. Take the peels and toss them in a little oil and bake them. A great snack! You could even dollop them with bacon, sour cream and cheese like potato skins.

To me they are called boiled potatoes or plain potatoes. But that is what I thought you meant by stewed potatoes. I solved the problem of the peeling by not peeling them at all! I see no reason to throw the peelings out. I do not have pigs or a compost pile so I would not have any use for them. I did however see in the comments where it was suggested to bake the peelings and I admit that does sound rather tasty.

I make something similar, but called Dutch Potatoes. I use a fry pan. Melt my butter and cook a bit of diced onion (as little or as much as you want). Add your potatoes covered with water and cook till soft and most of the water is gone. Or you can keep cooking till the potatoes are browned a bit.

We add a thickened. In the amount of potatoes she used we would put about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of self rising cornmeal into a cup of cold water and mix well, then pour into potatoes and stir for a minute or so. Let them come back to a boil for just long enough to start thickening then remove from heat.
