When we tell people to live within their means it's actually kind of cruel. No one is asking why quality things are out of people's means in the first place. My "bad" financial advice is to live your life. Live your life with joy. Be wise, but trust yourself and trust that you deserve joy.

It's like a narcissistic family. The toxic parents places all the children into certain roles causing dysfunction and chaos in the entire family, pitting everyone against each other. Now instead of getting to the root of the problem, all the siblings blame each other and have hate towards one another. Meanwhile the puppetmasters (the parents) sit back and laugh enjoying the destructions that they created in the first place.

It's always been interesting to me that people will tell a poor person that they don't need another starbucks coffee, but never tell a rich person they don't need another mansion. I remember when the Secretary of Education, Betsy Devos, wanted to slash school funding to already struggling and financially strapped schools, all the while she was on the hunt to purchase her SIXTH yacht. Greed is one helluva drug.

@@77HeIsLove_woot This is soooooo true. When I worked at a big box store, they used to sell huge bags of chicken wings because poor people would buy them and cook a whole meal for their families. They were very economical and people with money were buying steak and prime rib instead. Then came the popularity of "The Food Network" showing fifty different ways to make chicken wings for parties and tailgating. All of a sudden the price of chicken wings skyrocketed and I have never seen them cheap again. Rich people will put a price tag on anything, knowing that we will buy it because of our need to look like we're rich. They will sell you an $80.00 cup of dirt on a Tuesday when it was free the day before.

You are so right about housing vs renting. I am so tired of people, especially black people, reducing those who rent to ‘throwing money away’ and creating this ‘I am savvy with money because I have a house and you’re not because you’re still renting.’ If you have a roof over your head you’re not throwing money away. Also, if home ownership is the key to wealth, why wasn’t my grandfather and grandmother wealthy? Why aren’t my family members wealthy? They all owned or own homes- where is all of this wealth that homeownership provides? Listen, I am a homeowner myself so I am not against it, I am just against this debate about renting vs buying especially amongst African Americans.

If many home owners r real, they will tell u how costly a house can b. They don't speak of the repairs & maintenance that extends the price of renting. Not just that, but every1 doesn't want the responsibility of home ownership, nor does every1 necessarily live n 1 location all of their life. Selling a home is not always as easy as people think. Buying a home is not as affordable n many places as it once was. Most places where homes r under $200K, the average working person doesn't want 2 live. I just let people live & do what's best 4 them.

A fraction of the problem is the prevalent resistance to share within families or communities. If people shared their cars, homes, food, gardens, more people could increase their capacities and rest, play, create, and have much more fun! Even the burial spot is another scam. "Final resting place" is a lie, since most cemeteries get dug up after a few hundred years unless it's one of the lucky ones that becomes a famous historic spot and stays preserved longer. I know they have to get dug up eventually other wise we would be surrounded by nothing but cemeteries, but the fact they charge us a lot for a "final resting place" is just as messed up as everything else we are sold.

I finally starting “paying for my health) and trying to reverse the affects of insulin resistance, Hypothyroidism, imbalanced hormones & high cortisol levels at 26 & I’m slowly starting to results. I agree and don't at the same time. Overall, I believe "living within your means" is GENERALLY a good idea but I absolutely believe it is more difficult to do so when you are poor. Finding general statements that apply to everyone is the problem here like telling everyone to go to college when most people don't have any idea what to do in school. The people that really need to hear "live within your means" are those who only find joy in expensive things and what others have. Like, why can't we enjoy a walk through the park with each other and live in the moment? Those people need to (not be sad) change their mindset and experience joy from other sources.

Also, Dave Ramsey losing everything and becoming a millionaire is like someone becoming a parent at 14/15 yrs old and having a great life at 35. Did it work out? Sure. Would they suggest it to anyone else? Probably not. Same reason he tells others not to go crazy so they don't make the same mistakes as he made.

I'm going to approach this in good fate and just say that some of you significantly underestimate how the intersection of so many forms of systemic oppression in this country harms people. When you talk about people needing to change their mindset and experience joy from other sources, what you are not acknowledging is the fact that having to do this in and of itself is dehumanizing. Why do I need to make my life smaller when somebody else's is boundless with greed ? Asking people to create personal solutions to systemic problems that continue to grow and expand means that they will forever have to continue to adapt to horrible situations. Prescribing personal solutions to systemic issues is not a solution.

@@papertape7911 I was going to edit my original to specify these but I said nothing wrong. What I said may have been taken personal, almost as an attack, rather than as I said it and I'm sorry for not finding the right words for better share my point. 1) Just because I didn't say it, doesn't mean I missed it. She gave perfect examples of the systematic issues around poverty. From buying a used car that required immediate maintenance to buying cheap foods that cause health issues later. There's no reason to reiterate what she already said. I'm a black man from Baltimore City, I'm more well off now than most, but I know this well enough without any more. The only points I cared to share in the moment were the ones mentioned. 2) I'm speaking about a very specific group of people, not all poor people. And I initially pointed out GENERALITIES ARE DIFFICULT. Those who ONLY find joy in [what I would consider somewhat] destructive behavior are my target. Changing the 'only' in that statement is my true point. 3) Dehumanizing is the wrong word. I'd never say to remove your joy/personality/sense of self/etc. (which is dehumanizing). I'm saying EXPAND these. If being poor means you can't expand yourself, experiences and perspectives, you are dehumanizing poor people. 4) Did I say a change in mindset would be easy? No. Most men still can't seek therapy. Changing your mindset to experience joy/love/peace differently is definitely difficult. However, we continue to tell men to go to therapy, so I continue to believe that SOME people should look at other avenues for joy, especially if they already are struggling to survive. This would only benefit them because they could experience that joy more frequently if there is no price-tag. And if they become millionaires, they still can enjoy the same joy the exact same way. 5) Prescribing a non-solution to a systematic issue is worse than a personal solution. I've learned to accept and change things that I can in the moment until the [systemic or not] issue itself can be resolved. That's what I learned in therapy at least. Unless I should stop going to therapy now...

Buying cheap food for 1.5 years really messed up my gut health (distended belly, weight gain, diarrhea) and not going out really depressed me. Still in debt but atleast in healthier and no longer depressed. I do get SAD about being in debt but then your video put things into perspective. Everyone is in debt!!! House, car, credit cards, etc. I hope we can all collectively just stop paying these banks lol let the corporations burn. I'm ready for the governement to bail the people out. Not the corporations.

Thank you for mentioning the part about following the steps on your own terms! I absolutely disliked the idea of only paying off debt without saving anything else over a $1,000 until all of the debt is paid off. If I paid off all of my debt and threw all of my extra savings towards that and an emergency happens immediately after I pay it off, I'd be forced to go back into debt if the emergency cost more than $1,000! I dislike how rigid the steps are. I tried so hard to pay off debt and throw large lump sums at my debt, but life proved to be too unpredictable for me to over-generalize my budget. Dave Ramsey's steps are great for folks that need help with even setting up a budget, and maybe as a conversation starter...but, it's not the end-all-be-all.

I'm able bodied and the closest supermarket is 5 blocks away, but goddamn it's one hell of a trip when you're shopping for the month and have to lug around a cart half your height to get that shit home. something about it is so miserable and depressing. and the supermarket is really small to the point of it being difficult to move through the aisles with a shopping cart from their store. i just stopped going because it's too fucking much. i don't know how to explain why I don't go to that supermarket anymore. i just can't and i don't.

I agree with Dave Ramsey on some things. His advice helped me in budgeting. I sideeye him now, he puts down adults like myself that live with their parents. I work full time and pay my own bills. Due to financial and employment setbacks in the past, it is not financially smart for me to rent to prove I’m grown. There are others like me. He also fired an employee for getting pregnant out of wedlock. That’s sexism and discrimination. But, he comes from a family of real estate agents. That gives him advantages in business. Absolutely! When people see what’s in your cart in the grocery store and you pay with Snap all of a sudden what’s in your cart is scrutinized. Why are you eating shrimp and steak if you’re on food stamps?! Why can’t I eat good food just because I get stamps? So you should eat hot dogs and box Mac and cheese and processed foods only? Many people that get Snap are employed. Yes they are! And sometimes the person that’s looking in your card would qualify for snap. People see it as a handout. That’s a way for our country to help its people but many complain that our government doesn’t help us. It does many of you just don’t get the help when you need it. Great video!

Poor people get exploited all the time. In many ways we don't immediately see. "Food deserts", predatory car loans, and check bounce fees. High interest rates. Its a mess. It's tough thing navigate, but I have found security. Now the middle class is starting to feel the pressure I feel. That doesn't make me happy, but perhaps we'll see some empathy come our way. Politicians are more likely to support them more than the poor, disabled and elderly. I feel fortunate that I'm single. I cannot imagine how much pressure the responsibility of a family puts upon somebody. Terrifying! You all are talking about conditioning, looking at the system as a dysfunctional family, and generational trauma. I've been saying a lot of this for years, and it's so nice to find somebody else who gets that. And there seems to be quite a few of you in the comments. So refreshing! I've spent years in therapy to learn how to manage myself, and how to heal. But also therapy taught me to see family situations for what they are. I think those skills can be applied to the world. It rises you above, so you can look down at the whole picture. We are being manipulated constantly. Doesn't make me better, I'm not perfect. I just possess some skills to interpret my world, when I'm baseline...Anybody can do it.

$1000 actually does cover many emergencies. Think about how many people ask to borrow $50, $200, $500 for an emergency such as their lights being disconnected, food, medicine, a flat tire, or an auto insurance deductible. $1000 is usually enough to keep folks out of payday loan stores, asking family for money, pawn shops, etc. Most of the time my family has asked to borrow money for an “emergency”, it’s been less than $1000.
