More Details About This Video:
Many times people have cramping in their foot or even in their toes, and they have a hard time getting the cramping out. You can stretch and strengthen them with a towel, and rubber bands or marbles if you have some! Place the rubber bands or marbles on the floor. Pick them up one at a time with your toes, and move them to another pile.
Put a towel on the floor, and try to crumple the towel with your toes. Then you can stretch your toes and foot by placing your foot on the towel. Leave your heel on the floor holding the towel in place, and pull the towel up and over your toes until you feel a stretch. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, and do it three times.

Unfortunately in my case, curling my toes triggers the painful foot cramp. But the towel stretch is very helpful.

So simple, yet so effective. I've dealt with nearly daily foot cramps for years after a hyperextension incident, and this is the first thing I've found useful in terms of therapy and exercises. I just wish I had found this video a few years earlier... thank you!

Toe cramp is one the worst pains I’ve experienced! Only seems to happen when I’m over stretching like on a ladder... horrible when you’ve got over 50kg in your arms 😩

People tend to forget about the muscles in the feet until they are hurting!! You're right, preventative stretching and strengthening is just as important!!

I take magnesium citrate if I think I'm going to cramp up. Some of my massage clients swear by quinine water. The other thing that help if I get foot cramps - I walk it off on a cold hard tile floor. Weird but it works for me especially when my toes are curling up toward me (think Wicked Witch of the East). I don't sleep with heavy covers mashing my toes - I put a shoe box at the foot of the bed to take the weight of sheets and/or blankets.

This actually helped a lot. I’ve been in physical therapy for both of my ankles. now I have cramping at the bottom of my foot but I had no idea why this is the part of the Physical Therapy I forgot to do.

Mine started to cramp and I keep pushing it up because I know if I allow it to be pulled down it’ll be painful. After a while it hardens and I started wiggling it. Now it relaxed 😊

IVE BEEN GETTING THESE THE PAST TWO DAYS ! And it’s only when I’m stretching first thing in the morning and put all my weight on my knees sitting in a “hero pose” I feel the cramp sharp and I immediately turn back around. 2nd worst pain ever !

I suffer from severe cramps all night, every night. I find tight socks work well, but I'll definitely try these exercises. Mostly in my toes but also in hands and lower legs. Starting to think there may be something "more" going on... Stunning headaches out of no where.... no warning, they just hit. Anyway... good advice. Thanks for that...

What's the suggestion if my toes and under my feet cramp up doing the techniques? This is during while trying to use my feet to pick up objects and move them over. I waited about an hour and tried again with same result Thank you

Hello beautiful Dr. Jo, I have been suffering from severe legs, feet and fingers cramps for last many years. I run all the medical tests including neurological test to find the problem. but doctors are failed to diagnose the problem. I have to get up in the middle of night to rub my muscles when I get cramps. I will try the exercise for the toe which you show in this video. But I don’t think this is permanent solution, because we can’t do it at the middle of night when you are fast sleeping and get up on cramps. Please tell us a permanent solution if there are any. Thanks.

I have hammer toes due to pes cavus. Seems like your rubber band exercise would make it worse but the towel pulling exercise looks helpful. Any suggestions?

Strengthening with a band doesn't mean it will make the hammer toes worse. Working the muscles doesn't mean tighter, it means stronger. There is a difference. But if you don't feel comfortable doing them, then hold off on those. Good luck.

Is there a way to stop getting so much foot/toe cramping? Im in my 30s and Ive been doing yoga every day for about 4 months now and I get more foot cramping more then I ever did when I wasnt exercising at all which is sad and equally frustrating lol

mostly behind the left big toe under the foot - cramps occur for several seconds most nights for like 2 months thus far. Read foot cramps at night related to my diabetes. I do excersize and take 3 medicines, simlo, diamicron and metformin.

I will try these exercises I hope it helps. even just a simple stretch, brings on a cramp, I don't know why everything I read online says it is a mild cramp, even my doctor said this. Then he left the office for 22 days and I could not get any help. the office staff seemed to think I was a crying baby. I was told to drink tonic water or orange juice or eat a banana at night before bed. I take OVC leg cramp pills in the hope it helps Exercise helps a bit. so I joined an online chair exercise plan through my insurance. I bought a peddler exercise under the desk type. I have been going for walks and though I still have the cramps most of the time, today's cramps started even earlier at 6 pm it is still in spasms now at 11pm. In the last 23 days the longest I have slept in one session has been 4 1/2 then surprise I was able to go back to bed and sleep another 2 hours hours. Most nights it has been 2 to 3 hours of sleep before the cramp happens, so I am up from whatever time that is mostly around 3 am.

What I learned from my uncle ( he was a athlete), to prevent plantar fasciitis and other nasty foot injuries he did toe towel crunches. LIke you picked up the rubber bands, you just roll up the towel with your toes.

I play football ( I'm usin my people phone cuz mines getting fixed) but I'll be in flats then switch to cleats then back to flats and that's where the Plantar issues come in and mann mannn mannnn feet be feeling like somebody took a sharp knife and slowly cutting my strings in my feet

I just saw two of your videos, Stop Toe Cramps and Turf Toe Stretches. I tend to cramp my big toes on either feet when I am doing ankle pumps and pointing my toes away or doing bird-dog and extending the leg backwards or doing side lying hip abduction or prone hip extension. Would exercises mentioned in these two videos help or should I do something else? Could you please tell me what I need to do to get relief from the toes' cramping? Thanks.

They might help. It really just depends on what is causing the cramping. Sometimes other things like dehydration, low potassium, or anemia might also cause cramping. So if the stretches don't help, it's definitely worth checking in with your doctor.

@@AskDoctorJo Thanks. My bloodwork came normal. Also, no dehydration issue. I have mild arthritis in big toes. If I hold stretch long enough and work thru discomfort, sometimes cramps go away, so, I go by that. Should I continue to do that? Would you recommend any other stretch specifically for this problem? Thanks.

I have cramps shooting up from my right ankle up into my calf area any idea as to why that would be happening? It’s been going on for about two weeks now and as far as I know I have no injury. Often on throughout the day and night depending on the position of my foot and or leg. Thank you

Hi, If I bend my toes and stretch them to the bottom, my feet/toes lock up. Only comes right if I physically bend and hold them pushing upwards. I also have an issue with my knees (left one in particular). It jerks uncontrollably when I get to bed only. Esp when I'm tired and rested. Doctor prescribed Tripololene 25mg to be taken for a full week to kill the spasms, to no avail. I am 44 yrs old and healthy otherwise. My knee now is absolutely painful and hurts more when I sit and bend it to the right. Been suffering these smasms for like a year already or more. Also, if I hold my palms over my knees and bend them (knees), I can hear a crackling sound (like maybe my tissues). Please do kindly advise ❤😙💋

If you're not too busy, could you do a video on how to prevent abdominal cramps from working out (or maybe just respond to this)? Every time I lift at some point in the workout my abs start cramping like crazy (usually starts when I'm sitting up after a bench press) and continues for a good 10 minutes. I drink plenty of water and take potassium supplements. I just don't know what to do. Thank you for your time.

I can do that! Do you just get cramping or do you feel sick at all? Any other symptoms? In the meantime, some back extension exercises might help because you are stretching your abs in the process: www.askdoctorjo.com/content/back-extension-stretches Good luck!

AskDoctorJo Nah I don't feel sick, sometimes I feel like I'm going to throw up but I think that's due to the cramping. The contraction usually starts in the lower region of my abs, once the pain really starts to kick in though it pulls my entire abdominal in.

On occasion I have woken up with extreme cramping and pain in my toes. I've massaged them, tried to move them around creating even more agony! Two weeks ago, I woke up with toe pain and cramping that was making me crazy! I still have no idea what led me to take one of those "heat packs" you insert into your gloves or boots. I put this pack under my toes and put a pair of socks over my feet. Within a minute the cramps and pain were gone!!! I'm going out today to stock up on this handy little heat packs lol

It really just depends on what is causing the cramps in the first place. It can be a few weeks to a month or two.

What warm ups would you suggest before weights and resistant band workouts (Fire hydrant , donkey kicks) - my toes feel like they rip out and cramp up big time .. :/ Unsure if its because I need new trainers or what ... I warm up for 5 to 10 minutes from Yourube video warm ups and workout and I stretch after ... I don't get it - I also do mobility stretches too and foam roll :(

I will be lying down and suddenly I will get a spasm in toe, it locks and my bunion sticks out and it looks deformed. Feels really weird like it's locked and then it releases. Is this what you're talking about here or is mine something else?

Stretching my feet and toes is what sends me into toe cramps. Also, first the last year my job is basically sedentary. I'm some active at home but not much. Any comments ?

Sometimes you just have to be very consistent with the stretching, even if it cramps, to get the muscles to relax.

So I do ballet... I had warmed up, I’m 12 and I had done stretches and when I was doing a sequence I did an attitude hold and I got a horrible pain in my foot ouch it was the worst cramp ever

Hi Doctor Jo: I have had Morton's neuroma on my right foot for a couple of months now. I am trying not to have a cortizone shot but still find my foot/toes to be very painful. Do you have exercises that would help this heal without intervention or shots? Thank you!
