Thank you for all of the work you do. I've been researching the hell out of TV's the past couple of months after my almost 8 year old Vizio M60-C3 started developing cloudy squares. I didn't want to spend over $1,000 on a 65" since I do have other sets at home but all of your comparisons that included the Hisense U7K made sense to me, especially since I was able to snag one from Best Buy for $730. I just picked it up today since the supply of them was pretty low in my area and if it happens to still be available and go on sale for less during Black Friday then I can actually get a refund for the difference since I am a member of their tech program. So thank you again for all of the in depth comparisons.

Hi Fomo, Happy Thanksgiving! LG G3 OLED vs Sony A80L OLED 83 INCH MODELS. I can't decide on which TV to purchase. I am putting this in my living room that has 20 ft ceilings and only windows that are up about 15-17ft high. The room is brighter in the day but the sunlight never hits the wall where we plan to mount the TV. We as a family only watch TV at night (streaming) and very minimal gaming. We stream and watch movies with the Sonos Arc, Eras 300's and Sonos Sub Gen2. Which model is best in your professional opinion and why ? I feel like I'm splitting hairs on this decision but the only difference for us is that the G3 (83" does not include the MLA technology) is brighter than the Sony A80L. Appreciate the help.

My budget for an 85" TV is about $2500; so a month after buying the Qm8 I returned it and got the Sony X90L 85" for $2200 last night it dropped to $1999. It is a great display with Processing way better than a higher-priced TVs.

Also, isf calibration exists ya know? Calibrators calibrate based on your room's lighting conditions and TV companies calibrate based on the light conditions of the room they use to calibrate the TV. And in the end of the day when you calibrate LG and Sony look almost identical which means it's close to perfect. That's not how it works. Nobody's eyes can measure light, colors better than a colorimeter. So a color that should look a little muted would look colorful without them knowing how the colors actually should look. In return that color would look oversaturated slightly on another scene where the same color should look colorful.

How to know if Sony Judd is correct or not? Put on a B&W movie. That will tell you everything. It should look like a good b&w photograph without any hints of color tinge to the image. Ime, Judd needs correction. A good calibration takes care of that.

There is a reason why sony wants you to not calinrate it because they feel there way is thw correct way with not just numbers but eyes! They do this and this is what vincent has explained about sony doing things differently and how most dont acrually know how to truely calibrate a sony tv. So I agree with him tbh I think sony looks like sony out of the box and I dont touch it. They have a special look and its as good as it gets imo out of the box. They do other things no other makers do also and some go oh no thats not correct when in reality its sony research and comparisons that made them come to the conclusion they have and given that look. As he explained you may be able to get it more accurate to a meter but that doesnt mean that it wont change what sony wanted you to see. Also all of the people saying its sponsored by sony the shootout. Hisense, lg, aamsung and even sharp is there this year. So no this is just sony coming on due to the a95l being released so late and not in many consumers hands yet. They started this out by explaining the release/launch so its just to gibe us more information since the other brands 2023 models have been released for so long and we already know alot about them.

If I may answer your question. In my opinion the A95L is way better if you are truly a movie lover, stream a ton of low bit apps, and only game once in a while. Then the 65" A95L is absolutely the TV to go with! Sony's processing is hands down the best in the industry. But if your more on the gaming side of things then the 77" G3 is better LG has the gaming side on lock down(while I know people always say BIGGER is better it's not true in all cases) I'd prefer the Sony picture more than LG plus long term the Sony will hold up longer than LG.. just my opinion take with it what you will!

Of course you should calibrate it that is wildy unaccurate view. Of course every tv maker will claim they special make it to be most accurate withtheir own view . Reality is that no its not like their reference monitor without calibration as every panel has variances and shifts and then marketing and sales will get involved to ensure sales to common people. Shadow detail is one factor that is bugely imporved and perceived depth just check oug Vincent on hdtv who uses a sony reference monitor to compare with tvs and you can before after calibration and how much closer and better it is after calibration.

@puffman06 99.9% haven't seen it thats why. You put side by side the added depth and detail is stunning. Colours just pop more when they are meant to and scenes make more sense. I say as an owner of a90j 83 inch thought it would be small jump from calibration almost not noticeable it was huge difference. Does help i guess that my calibrater had worked with song engineers and knew how to in the service boost brightness for full field and peak safely and correctly via service menu adjustments. He told me they even admit the tvs are held back as sony engineers are limited as they ver conservative with pushing a panel. So basically engineers are over written by song execs telling them to hold back as they dont want to have burn issues legal. But reality is if you dont anything stupid like news channels on vivid for 24/7 burn isnt an issue especially properly calibrated you can push panel higher. 10-15% full field 20-25% peak brightness. But biggest difference was honestly depth/detail and shadow detail/bear blacks. Remember each panel has variances and only way to fix it is through proper calibration. When tv makers show off their they use vivid the worst picture mode its a deservice to such great tvs not to get most out of them by calibration.

I had the Samsung s95c but took it back because it had serious problems with SDR. Couldn’t get skin tones corrected, the remote is too small, over-saturates red and green etc. My older LG B8 actually looked clearer. Hard to explain that. Not a manufacturer fanboy as I still rock a Samsung LCD tv and a Vizio. Had a Sony Trinitron in the 80s. Will give the Sony a good look. I believe qd oled is the future. I hope Sony has overcome the problems I had with Samsung’s qd oled. If they have I’m getting one. If not, I’ll wait to see what LG does with the new chip and blue production. Either way the consumer wins. Get what looks good to your eyes and enjoy your choice.

Can’t be rolled back indefinitely or at all. 😂 one year. I smell BS! And besides Sony TVs aren’t in a vacuum. This shoot out i guarantee will bring that point home. Still cheaper to buy competitor and calibrate if you wish. IMO unless side by side save your money, the vast majority will never know.

This brings up an important point. People looking at a shootout like this might think wow the LG and Samsung look almost as good as the Sony for much less not taking into account the professional calibration (about $5 hundo) needed for those TVs to keep up. If you think and LG or Samsung out of the box will look that good your living in delusionville.

And if you believe the magical Sony "offset" is going to make every single one of their A95Ls look identical out of the box, you're living in delusionville. They're going to have the same kind of panel variance the other brands have. Of course a Sony rep is going to talk up their TVs as something special that you "can't" get from the other sets out of the box. Yet you're still paying way more for that out of the box feature than what it would cost to get it professionally calibrated, or even learning to do it yourself. There's no arguing that the Sony sets handle crappier content better than both LG and Samsung, but when using actual 4K discs, the difference between the LG and Sony are minimal to the point of not perceptible. That has nothing to do with calibration or "offsets" though and more to do with their image processing.

@Neonmirrorblack

@@TheRealJohnHooper 77'' C9, and I paid $500 to get mine calibrated...by doing it myself, which is about what it would cost to have a professional do it. The difference between what their professional gear (that costs multiple thousands more) vs what I could do is measurable, but not really perceptible for the cost of their gear. Even if I wanted to rely on professional calibration alone, I would still need to get it done every few years...that's just how TVs work. Your day one calibration won't be the same as the panel wears in a year or two. Going to be getting a new 77'' at the start of next year. Right now, it's between the G3 and the A95L, and I wasn't dismissing how good the Sony looks, I was dismissing the PR bullshit, which is exactly what it is. For me it's going to come down to which handles shadow detail better. So far, it's been pretty bad with my B6, C8 and C9. If the Sony can actually handle near black *noticeably* better, I'll likely go with it.
@mikew1080
@mikew1080 10 күн бұрын
@Neonmirrorblack funny that you bring up panel variance. The sample size is large enough to see that all A95Ls are incredibly close. You can actually dial back Bgain to -4, Rgain to -1, all offsets to -1, and be incredibly close to D65 on all of them. Near black is also incredible, especially when looking at the competition. Say what you want, Sony looks great OOTB vs. the competition and takes very little effort to dial in to get that last few percent of performance from it. That's more than I can say for my LG, which all take quite a bit of work out of the box to get looking decent and need a thorough calibration that differs highly from set to set.

IDGAF about creators intent. I want my picture to look clear and vibrant. I bought the TV cuz I want the best picture quality possible. If I wanted creators intent then I would go to the movie theater for 7$ instead of buying a 3k tv. Again, creators intent utterly useless.

Samsungs default presets for me are very reliable compared to a Samsung. That said, what idiot spends top tier tv money and doesnt go into the setting to tweak to their liking. Im not tsking sbout 20pt white corrections but most of the time, change the temp, contrast, colour, disable or enable processing (whatever suits you) live cour or colour space, change, done.

No they are saying that you shouldn't calibrate it! Because they do it there own way and how they feel tv should be seen. They have done this forever now and it's why they sre so good and why people like the sony image. It's also why vincent had explained that most calibrator don't actually know how to correctly calibrate a sony but sony doesn't want you to calibrate it they want you to watch it how they give it to you with that sony look. Tbh I've still yet to see a TV I like more out of the box. You clearly didn't listen to the entire video because they actually don't want you to they believe it then ruins what they tried to do.
