I used to work at a fast food place called A&W and one of the customers asked for diet mountain dew, but my co worker thought it would be funny to give them sugar type. I took the drink out to the customer and I asked if they had diabetes and they said yes. I took the drink back because I knew it was sugar type. I called the person a "f*cking twat", got them a new drink and told my manager what happened. That person was terminated immediately and I was given a "Pat on the back". People are so stupid. Ugh.

Yes that is huge of you. Well done. I do not have type one diabetes but have much experience with it having worked as a cna caretaker and also at a pharmacy that sold pump products. As I understand it a type one takes their current sugar level then enters the amount of carbs/sugar they are going to ingest and then doses the Insulin approapriate to that calculation. It is not easy, but they have machines to help the process. Then they eat and drink. So if they were lied to, then the insulin would not be affective. You could have saved a life NO JOKE. Thank you for taking it serious and doing the right thing.

It's disgusting the amount of times I've read people admit that they give full sugar drinks to people who order diet drinks just because they think someone is doing it for less calories and they think it's funny (which is still a valid reason. It's not anyone's business why someone would order a diet drink). A mistake is one thing, but the fact that some people knowingly and vindictively do that is so repulsive. I hope people learn how dangerous that is, because it really could kill someone.

Yeah. I've even heard problems about people who order a coffee drink with a certain milk type, either due to something like lactose intolerance or a disease that I cannot think of where you have to be hospitalized due to something happening and such and it is disgusting. I actually read a post where someone said they like giving people the non diet version of the ordered drink and such

I know right! My mom has issues digesting cow milk and orders her coffee with soy milk. She always takes a small sip before we leave just to make sure because I'm terrified of someone either purposely or mistakenly giving the wrong one. Thankfully she it wouldn't be fatal as in some cases, but it still would be dangerous.

My daughter is allergic to pickles. She went into McDonalds and told them to hold the pickles on her sandwich. When she got her order it had pickles on it. She told them they had to make a new sandwich because she was so severely allergic to them she would get sick on that sandwich. They took the sandwich back and gave her "another" sandwich. She ate it and her throat started swelling up. They didn't make her a new one they just took the pickles off the old one and gave it back to her. She was very lucky she had only eaten 2 bites of it because the throat swelling didn't last long. But her husband came unglued on the McDonalds staff. My daughter had also just recovered from a stroke. (she's 30) It didn't go well that day for McDonalds. lol

Patrick bumpus at my local McDonald’s you get paid a little more than peanuts and they don’t hire anyone under the age of 18. I know most of them do but not all of them. And most pay around $12/hr to start.

I think this happened because many people fake being allergic to pickles, I of course think that absolutely can not happen, it's ridiculous this could ever even happen, but I know many parents say their child is allergic and therefore can't have pickles, which is wrong. And because the line works almost on autopilot, they forget a zillion times in a day they had to execute a different kind of burger. I really think they should have a worker dedicated working solely diet foods. I can see the cashiers and line workers getting frustrated because someone forgets what they needed to do, and cutting corners because of that. You definitely should sue, maybe then people could realize they are playing a serious matter and the people actually allergic can then be heard and taken seriously

Just for future notice for anyone who can't have sugar - whenever you order any "risky drinks" take a blood sugar test strip and test it before you try to drink it to prevent issues from people being unable to follow instructions. Its hassle that shouldn't be necessary but its far better than any attacks.

In the US we call this a form letter. Basically a prepared letter that everyone with a complaint receives with just the name and a few details added by a secretary. Also in the US, if you had the soda cup and could prove they had given you sugared Coke, McDonalds could have been forced to pay your medical bills related to their mistake, plus a large amount for your pain and suffering. Those settlements are sometimes in the millions!

I understand why people use the patented excuse of “allergies” when ordering something a particular way from the menu. No one wants to spend 20 minutes at the register explaining what symptoms they get which could be anything from rash, diarrhea, vomiting, glucose issues, fainting, migraines or anaphylactic shock and what other health issues they’re dealing with. Then they have to answer questions from a stranger who has questions about it and suggestions about the diagnosis or how to treat it. People just want their food and not have to give a free seminar. Is that too much to ask?
@abbigailcarr2725
@abbigailcarr2725 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah like when I ask for things I have to tell people im allergic to wheat for them to understand that the food cannot have any particles of wheat or flour on it, that you can’t just take the croutons out of the salad and give it back to me, bc people don’t understand celiac disease and if they ask then I have to explain what an autoimmune condition is and I just want my damn food without the staff deliberately sabotaging me by giving me a regular hamburger bun bc they think I asked for the gf one bc I’m on a diet

Applebee's almost killed me once. I am severely alergic to peanuts and tree nuts and I ordered a salad and specifically told them like I always do that I will pretty much die if nuts get in my food. The person who made my salad thought it would be funny to put a few almonds in the bottom of the to go box hidden under all of the salad and I did not notice them until I had almost eaten half the salad and gotten some of the almonds and imiediatly went into anaphylactic shock. We didn't sue them. We didn't blame the franchise. All I asked was that their all staff in the reastruant did classes on the importance of allergy awareness.

My bf can't because his meter uses the cassettes and dipping it in juice would break the machine. We were literally talking about how convenient it would be for accuchek or another company to make a meter or thing specifically for testing if juice had sugar. Even if it didn't say exactly how much, for example 'no sugar','low sugar', 'med sugar', 'high sugar'.

In my opinion, the reason why people would sue for mistakes like that if it was them is because they know the 'sorry' letters they get mean nothing and the business just carries on as normal but if they was to lose lots and lots of money due to a law suit, the senior bosses notice such money losses and take action. Years ago you knew when someone apologised for a mistake they made, their apology was very sincere and they would take steps to make sure it never happened again. Today, the only way mistakes are stopped is if the company loses money due to a law suit.

This situation was absolutely not taken as seriously as it should’ve been. I think we should compare it to all of the times that people were given fried in a nut free oil. ch fries that were supposed to be with no nuts and yet they were actually boiled in a nut boiled in a oil that had not seen him and the child or adult had a reaction to that which nearly killed them. This situation here is very similar to that and in those situations there was a full-blown or should I say many full-blown legal action is taken. And so should this one too, I do not have this condition, But understand what whe went through. Because of cancer, my potassium drops all of the time and the pain is is unbearable along with having to retrain my muscles to work again. No one should have to go through that because of the mistake of someone behind the counter. I truly do believe it needs to be addressed just as the mistake with putting or should and then gradient that people are allergic to and ended up having a very bad allergic reaction. All this lady got was a simple we’re sorry do you want us to send you a voucher will try to do better next time. There should’ve been a legal case there she had to pay a lot of legal for years and a lot of hospital fees and was not able to work for a short amount of time they didn’t want much more than they think they did to her a simple sorry isn’t enough. But for that letter I hope that they actually did follow up as I personally know most restaurant managers laugh it off and send a “apology” letter or email. They say often they will follow up with staff but don’t me as a crew “bottom” of the chain lol I follow up more with the people I work with who mess up.

Great job that you actually contacted them, and it’s surprising for me that they really responded👍🏼, also some words weren’t that fitting. But I find it funny that they say, that they have this little thing on the lid to press down, so it’s clear if it’s Diet Coke or not, because I always order a Diet Coke( out of health reasons as well) and I almost never have the lid pressed in. But as you sad, with time you learn to taste the difference.So I think they have to work on that lid thing , although I can understand that the service people are standing under a lot of pressure and stress, so little things sometimes are just not done, because everything has to happen so quickly and it’s mostly pretty hectic. But things like this shouldn’t happen.

I have a sugar reaction it’s like a allergic. I have alway been able to tell the difference in tastes of cokes. In my city they recently stopped serving Diet Coke in the drive but if we tell them my condition they are usually pretty good and will go to the dine in part of the restraunt to get it. But unfortunately someone wasn’t so kind and lied to my father and gave us normal coke that leaded to an automated reaction. I no longer go threw the drive threw and go into the restaurant to fill my own drink.

I am nurse and I was working at McD during my school years. Lot of coworkers just didnt care about normal coke, diet and zero. But lot of them just did a mistake because of rush in the restaurant. I allways make sure i give ppl diet coke or special meal if they need them. Also lot of times happend that coworkers were in hurry and just switch cups or just put cup for my customer away so I dont know if its diet coke anymore or just regular coke. I allways start to make another drink and managers were so pissed because I waste the products. I have lot of troubles just because I wanna be sure I will not kill anyone.

Just feel like I need to let people know this.. if you have diabetes you CAN have carbs. I have type 1 diabetes and use insulin, so I can have carbs if I want it. But I don't drink anything with sugar in it though because it's hard to find the perfect dose of insulin for that. :)

Type 1 diabetic on a insulin pump. With left side nerve damage and I have gastroparesis my insulin pump beeps all the time at night if it’s tangled and if I eat before I go to bed I pay dearly for it with severe stomach pain the type of pain I feel is like if your diving into water and you belly flop smacking the water with your belly Times that by 3 and that’s the pain I get. I’m not on a feeding tube and cannot even imagine how that would be like. Mc Donald’s do not agree with me either. I ate One burger and it cost me 2 days in the hospital due to a slight blockage in my intestines. I feel like I hit a very unlucky lottery. Gastroparesis usually hit women but sometimes men gets it too. Stay strong and your a inspiration to me. I hope there’s a cure one day. I’m hoping my insurance approves the pacemaker in my stomach the success rate is not that good but I’m hoping it helps somewhat. Stay strong and never give up some days is a good day and some are bad.

I'm type 1 diabetic and I could have regular coke if I wanted to but my blood sugars would go super high and all that so I always get diet coke and I always double check with mcdonalds to make sure its diet and they always say it is even if it isant .. Thank god I can tell the difference now and I always make a big deal out of the mistake when I realize they gave me regular coke instead of diet because the teens working at mcdonalds could care less about if its diet or not but they don't realize that something so small can put someone at risk like you and me ... I'm so glad you shared this story :)

I’m type 1 diabetic aswell, I eat many many many carbs a day but just do my insulin with everything I ear&every 2 hours regardless of food. I have to be careful with pizza though. Carbs and protein can clash when eaten and cause insulin to work quicker, or slower in some cases depending on how much you eat, split your insulin in half. So say you have 10 units, 10mins before you eat do 5 units and an hour after that do the other 5, helps so much doing that for me!!

Ah no! I have to have the full fat versions of drinks now. As the sweetener aspartame gives me extremely bad migraines where I'm in bed for a week throwing up. I too have been caught out at restaurants where they have give me diet when I constantly was asking that it was the full fat. As well as at a McDonald's. I don't understand how they can't just follow an easy instruction!

if one has a chronic disease that could cause death by the simplest mistake of diet coke then i don't really comprehend why one would go to a place like mcdonalds ( which is already poison even to healthy people ) in the first place. seems like way too big a gamble. even if it wasn't scum of the earth doing it on purpose, there is ALWAYS human error even when the utmost precaution and attention is given.

My partner and I went through the drive through of a McDonald's just the other day. I ordered a regular Dr. Pepper, but I was given a diet. Now, this has happened on more than one occasion, so my partner has taken to checking my drinks to make sure they aren't diet before I start drinking them. It's a good thing he did, otherwise we would have spent the night in the emergency room instead of out with friends. I have a severe allergy to aspartame, which is found in most diet sodas.

Im a type 1 diabetic,you CAN have carbs and actually do need them as if you dont your blood sugar would fall dangerously low..its a case of a good balance with diet and insulin..old school and diabetes is NO sugar but tht is no longer the case..you can eat anything and everything in moderation and if you do decide you want a treat then you take extra insulin to cover it 😊 (type 1 for 33 years)

Something you could do is have them tag your order as an allergy (I know it's not but where I was the best way to keep people from cross contaminating) Tell them the allergy is high carbs or something so they'll treat your order with more care, and while saying this stress that your drink must be diet. If they flag your order anyone else who handles your food and drink will know they need to take extra steps to be careful. When I would take orders (I didnt work at McDonalds idk how they did it but I did work in a drive thru) I would get the drinks as people asked for them and if possible I would leave the drinks on the machine so the person who ends up grabbing them knows exactly what they are handing to the guests at the window. I would also pour out drinks (when I was the one handing them out) if I wasnt sure what was in them especially when someone ordered a diet drink. The lid and button technique would work in theory but I've had occasions where someone grabs a regular coke when it's supposed to be diet and then clicks the button on the lid cuz they don't care (yeah I've had to explain to people, why handing someone a sugary drink when they ask for diet isn't okay many times because they thought it was stupid.) or aren't paying attention. I've had instances where I wasnt paying attention and couldn't recall what drink I grabbed and also pour it out then. There are so many reasons people can't have carbs from things as little as preference to things as big as your situation. The people in that drive thru need better training and need to be informed of how serious it is when guests ask for a diet drink (not everyone tells you that it's important until after you mess up too so treat every diet drink like its life or death.) The allergy thing might not work if the staff is incompetent.

I'm really sorry for your condition, which I guess must be quite despairing to say the least. However I think it would be more safe if you ordered a bottle of water whenever you eat out (especially in places like McDonald's where drinks aren't bottled and you can't be sure whether they've served you the correct thing). It's just a piece of advice. I hope you don't feel upset for this. Wish you the best.
