As an American, I find this video and the comments here quite shocking. Apparently "homelessness" is a relatively new thing in Singapore and people there seem genuinely concerned about these poor people. People living in the streets has been a problem here in America ever since the 1980's when Reagan was President. Today there are MANY 1000's of people living on the streets of American Cities and they are treated badly everywhere. Instead of wanting to help these homeless people, everyone is more concerned that they don't settle into their neighborhood. So the police often just keep them on the move from one place to the next. As an American, this video and these comments are a very good reflection on Singapore for me. What a beautiful place !!!

we aren't that perfect singapore's got stuff america doesn't(eg. state sponsored healthcare, mandated rigorous education), america's got stuff singapore doesn't(eg. freedom of speech, rights to own firearms) homelessness is still a problem here since the 60s, it's just dropped so drastically that it's negligible today also not everyone's worrying about the homeless, most have too much on their plate to care about them can't deny it's a good place to live in tho

There's a difference in meaning. Homeless simply means anyone without a home, as the word suggests. It can include those living in temporary housing or shelters, as well as those living in the streets. Rough sleeping strictly means you're sleeping in the streets.

For example, it's like I have work that is three hours away from my home so I choose to sleep on a park bench as the commute takes too long. It's different from being homeless as they choose to sleep outside. They work too, and they aren't using budget motels or anything because it's just sleep, they need to save money, and they can go home on weekends.

I would be happy to pay a little more taxes so social services can be provided. We don't have to offer luxurious accommodation. But if we can afford some privacy and independence and mental assistance/counseling, more social workers I think will go a long way to slowly chip away at the issue.

Having just social service personnel go around and talk to these homeless people is not enough. We need to provide a bed/sleep mat with a meal, cleaning facilities and maybe a first aid station (where a social worker(s) can be there as well to discuss ways forward). I don't see a problem making some of our community center halls (maybe from 9:30pm to 6:30am and serve a dual function as a temp shelter and for other community activities)or void decks to make actual infrastructure and support for these people to get back on their feet or reorganise themselves.

@@scbchong6964 Did I say its the govt fault? Or anyone's fault? Govt I believe is the main entity that can lead such an initiative because it requires a wide field of interdepartmental/disciplinary planning. Most Singapore charities don't have the broad skillset or authority (eg help from the police and social manpower to gather and initially direct the homeless) to develop such social infrastructure even with monetary support. Look not everyone can succeed in this world, misfortune (eg health issues, social abuse, bad habits/gambling/drinking/drugs, bankruptcy, unemployment long list etc) happens quite often some self inflicted some indirect. Whatever is the case, they are down and out and we should help them recover if they are willing to remotivate themselves. Oh I have approach many rough sleepers not only in Singapore but in the UK. Everyone can drop a few dollars to them but the next day you see them return, because giving them money/help this way actually make them latch on and continue begging and sleeping rough. They have no means to improve their lives or even know how to. And yes I have help in soup kitchens as a helper before, including gathering hand me down clothes to help, its only for a few days, but I gave me some exposure on their plight. I have had many family arguments and have spent days wondering overnight, so I know how some families feel in which a place to cool down and talk is always good to clear your mind. When it comes to family arguments some people just don't want to talk about their dirty laundry to their friends, but may talk to a social worker in confidence. Our social infrastructure, needs to improve and give the needy the chance to regenerate their lives, this should be included the help and not just the immediate issues of a place to go away from the elements of rough sleeping.

It's not a new situation. In fact, the homeless / rough sleepers are all around if you care to look. Instead of hoping that the govt will reach out to them someday, I rather people take matters into their own hands and offer these people jackets / blanket after a full day of rain. It doesn't matter if they made some poor decisions along the way -- Nobody deserves to sleep out in a chilly, rainy 16C night with just a cardboard / thin blanket. Do something, instead of merely averting your eyes when you see them. What does it matter if you pay more taxes to help them tmr, if they freeze to death today?

@@godsamazinggrace5331 You make a very good point from your jest. I think many of us don't know the true cost (namely time and resources) of being socially responsible to actually help. It actually takes a significant infrastructure to make an ideal happen (ie to return a homeless individual to normality, a bed to return to, a place to get cleaned, some social core (people to talk with mutual respect to share and discuss ways forward), if still young < 65y say to re-motivate the person to contribute as a volunteer (initially) to earn his keep and perhaps to full or partial employment. For those older, then we (namely the Gahman and charity) need to ensure basic health and accommodation can be provided (could be just a bed, access to basic facilities and enough to eat, even a dorm place is S$250-300 pm to service an individual so the cost can build up to really help them) with of course some access to human interaction. Most of us think ... alamak just give few dollars to a homeless bagger solves his problem, remember that few dollars can only perhaps help him/her to the next meal (then he/she will be back to bagging and back to square 1 and their lives will never change). And with the pandemic, more people are going to be trapped in homelessness.

Singapore is hardly a perfect country. People need to broaden their horizons and accept the fact. Instead of focusing on the flaws of other countries and bashing on them. Why not initially welcome those flaws into Singapore as they already exists here and work on them. Singapore is the same as any, the innate desire to progress as a nation. You expect the government to scope in on the various tenets that are categorized as potential harm, that progress will only stretch out longer and thinner. gst increase, petrol price increase etc... are the requirements of growth. The reason on why they increased are because citizens are demanding more welfare. As anything, it is undeniably quid pro quo. You demand more, the country demands more. Simple ideal to grasp. You could argue that the demands for the increase of welfare are fictitious, and yet I see complaining and talking amongst their cliques about what the nation can do for better welfare. They do not directly ask for them but words do have certain influence and they travel. People are constantly desiring for Sg to be a utopia and being inherently different from other countries. but how? the existing problems are the same, the ideal that our nation is built upon are also the same compared to others. How can ppl expect differently in a uniform world. Why poverty in a (____) country? is definitely ignorant to ask after expressing "politically correct answer", the juxtaposition between those two sentences is definitely not laudable. Poverty is required however shamed. Sg ppl of any age desire for more money and higher paid jobs, sure go ahead. But at the expense of other unfortunate ppl. it is inevitable. Your minuscule facet of a perfect ideal is non existent. Do not use the country's method of enhancing your welfare and in return spit on their faces on how we have poverty. Reflect on yourself and ask yourself why your desires conflict with your perfect ideal of a world and then come back to this issue to further assess your viewpoint.

The foreign worker part in this video says they get up at 1am but obviously our public transport doesn't go 24hrs so if they sleep at their dorms who knows what time they have to leave to get here and a cab is out of the qtn. So they stay near workplace to sleep before their overnight shift starts. They want more sleep time vs comfort of sleepin at dorm. Construction site I'm not sure if it's cost effective to always build a dorm beside a site so maybe that's why they don't do it and sometimes because work location the workers stay far. As for locals, help is always given when you ask from the authorities.

Malaysian living standard is now ahead of Singapore esp Penang, KL n Johore. They take up jobs in Singapore and live in landed properties with big cars. Do they need our empathy? Do focus on Singaporeans social problems (Which Singapore government restrict reporting to create a fake all is good and well in Singapore)

I am not saying we should sugar coat the poverty issue. I am also not trying to be politically correct because my upbringing is not to be a dishonest person, a liar, someone intellectually dishonest. We should not let the world perceive poverty in sg maybe they are just enjoying the breeze. In a nutshell, we should just say, "Knn! This is Boh Bian one mah! Whats the issue? Go go! Nothing to see here. Go away!" Should we blame them so that they cannot blame others?
