Struggling to Improve Your Kicks? It Might Not be What You Think

Check out Grant's KZfaq at / grantstevensma
In this video, Grant discusses how simple fixes can sometimes lead to dramatic improvements in technique, mobility, and power. Too often we stay fixated on a single aspect of performance - often flexibility when it comes to martial arts. This can be a limiting factor, even resulting in limiting beliefs that prevent us from even attempting more technical movements.
There's a high chance that you can kick higher, faster, and more powerfully than you think. And this applies to many other aspects of martial arts and life.

@@grantstevensma I love joe Rogans view on the side kick with a proper chamber but I would like some clarification on if it is easier to defend and block like that as opposite to just shooting it straight out?
@grantstevensma
@grantstevensma 3 жыл бұрын
@@organicenergy5124 I don't think so man, but I would say it's because of a couple of things. 1 - The chamber creates the kick to be executed down a straight line, making it much more difficult to read. We ideally should lift the leg to the height of where the kick will fire out first before the extension, because then less work has to be done. Reason for this is that our eyes are not made well to read distances that are going straight forward, hence having break lights on our cars. Similarly to how a boxer is taught to shoot his punches straight out from his guard on the straightest line possible because if his hands are low and then have to raise to strike, then the opponent is far more likely to see it - it's also slower, because it's less economical. 2 - It's more powerful this way and even if somebody manages to get their hands near the kick, then it is still very likely to penetrate the guard simply because it has more velocity behind it. Hope this helps man

As always with this channel and Grant, the video and informational quality is superb! I'm very happy this was uploaded and we have the answers to the flexibility/technique inquiries. I'm also joyful to hear there will be more content coming with Grant's channel as well. I've been following him since he first appeared on this channel and been hoping for much more. Footwork is so critical when performing anything, especially martial arts kicks. I've done damage by kicking wrong and it took a long time to get the strength and performance back in that knee. Honestly, I've never really returned to the arts after. Perhaps it is past time I look for the beginner video and rewatch it and put the tips to good use. Thanks as always. Stay safe and healthy and have a great evening!

I create centripetal and centrifugal force to jump and kicks harder and cleaber. I also create two spheres of force with my body to complete kicks. Not fancy kicks, they have there purpose tho. First sphere is to create force, it's all limbs moving one leg the stationary. This stationary leg is a post, it's where you intialy place your intention. the kicking leg lifts and the other limbs move in complimenting geometry this is stored energy, it's gonna bounce back. Second sphere is issuing the force, use the kicking leg now, and now the kicking leg gains your intent. The force that would bounce back is bouncing back in a new direction out your kicking leg. The limbs moving is the centrifugal force, the torso's strength and flexibility are the centripetal force. They can compliment eachother. The lighter your kick feels the better. The sensation can be deceiving. This for issuing force. As far as finishing a kick, land it light and naturally. Anywhere really, I'm aggressive and don't like to give up space. But over all the ideas the same. I use kicks for finishing fights. Depends on how much dude can take. If you can get this idea turned into a feeling or instinct kicks come out natural and fast. I don't like to kick high dispute my size. Love these videos

There are many different kinds of kicks but in terms of muscles and strength involvement, basically all of them involve strength in both sides of the leg. If you're quads are overactive and your hamstrings and glutes (the opposing muscles) are weaker in comparison, or just not firing at the correct time (which is just a matter of practice), it's not hard to injure yourself... In short, train ALL your legs. The whole body, really. Your legs are connected to your torso, so a strong trunk will do wonders for most activities involving your limbs.

Depends how you train them man. The best way is the SAID Principle (Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands) Basically performing the activity repetitively develops the necessary muscles to be able to do so more effectively. I don't personally like heavy weight training for martial arts training and prefer calisthenic or gymnastic style conditioning. Even then, those shouldn't take time away from training upon the activity of martial arts itself. - good luck!
