If you or someone you love suffers from depression this is a very important video to watch and share.
Depression is real.
You aren’t alone if you suffer from it and you need to know it is treatable.
You also need to know that despite how you feel right now, you can learn to how to live a very happy and successful life even though you are struggling.
I met a mom and her son at a Q&A I did after a speech recently. The son was very candid about his struggle with depression and even I got a little choked up as I was talking to him.
I shared a concept that has helped my loved ones deal with depression and I want you to listen up and really embrace this idea: there is a difference between what you FEEL and what you push yourself to DO.
The real challenge with depression is that it makes you FEEL like you can’t or don’t want to do what you need to do to heal.
Depression is lying to you.
You can do things that feel hard.
No matter how depressed you feel when you wake up, you CAN push yourself to get out of bed.
No matter how lethargic you’ve become, you CAN push yourself to go for a walk, get to the gym, or show up at spin class.
No matter how much ice cream soothes your sadness, you CAN choose to eat healthier foods.
No matter how much you feel like giving up or there’s no point, you CAN choose to push forward.
And, no matter how alone you feel, that’s a lie, too.
You are not alone and help from a professional or a family member is one phone call away. And you can push yourself to make it, despite how isolated you feel.
Depression lies when it convinces you that you can't.
You are capable. You do have a choice.
It may feel like you don’t, but you always have a choice to push past the lies that depression tells you and take a step forward. As my friend Glennon Doyle Melton says, you can do hard things. And when you understand that depression lies to you I hope a little weight gets lifted and things won’t feel as hard as they have been.
I hope you’ll realize that’s the trap depression set, and now you can free yourself by taking action.
While you might suffer from depression right now, your life does not have to suffer as well. You do not have to listen to the lies. You can choose to get out of bed, get help and live your life, one small push forward at a time.

I’m fascinated by this idea that depression is like a “deep-rest”. It’s a way of our bodies forcing us into a period of deep introspection because the lives we’re living aren’t serving us in the way they should and our souls are bursting to come alive. I have experienced depression and it can be agonisingly painful - but looking at it this way and learning from it can be helpful.

Mel said something that changed my mindset once. She said you should think of working out like you unload the dishwasher...No one wants to do, but we do it anyway. That’s how i think of exercise now...i do it every day even though i don’t like it. Until recently i have begun liking the physical activity! Thanks Mel

Duggy Dugg , you know how I do end my anxiety or depression? Whenever I feel stressed or depressed I go to make congregational prayer in mosque, I feel so peace and relieved that there is one creator of mine who love me and is with me , who fed me and clothed me. And at the end I have to return to him. And sometimes I listen Quran and get relieve of my anxiety. I will give you a link why don't you give it a try.

I LOVE how his mother keeps soothing her son on stage. May be just to be sure that he takes Mel's inputs in right spirit or not to be overwhelmed about being on stage with so many people looking. Shows the solid support system his mom would be in his fight against depression. Much love to them and Mel.

What really pushed me out of that self-destructive spiral is the fact that nobody was going to rescue me. Deep inside, we all have to acknowledge that we´ve been waiting so long for the change to come, instead of creating it. It´s great how the 5 second rule has always an invitation ;)

I'll be honest. I've been utilizing her advice for a bit now and I have a completely new outlook on my life. I view my brain as a tool versus something to be ruled by. I won't lie. There are still days where the doom and dreariness takes over... But when I come to this comments section and read all the fantastic ways everyone else has learned to cope and move forward, it's like hitting a reset button. It's like, fuck yeah, I'm in control. Fuck no I won't let my emotions define me. Emotions are just visitors. Why would I let temporary feelings effect the way I feel about myself to my core? Effect how I move, talk, and navigate the world as I have been doing all of my life? Nope. Not anymore. I may have moments where the depression is so strong that it convinces me otherwise, but I remind myself I am in control. I am the master of my mind, the writer of my story, NOT my sad brain!!!

This is amazing. I suffered from depression for many years before learning to overcome it. Now my nephew who is still a child is dealing with it. He just wrote me a note that said, "I am garbage." 😢 I am going to explain it to him in this way because it's so simple in it's language that even a kid can understand. "Oh there's my brain being sad again, and it's lying to me!"

Hope things are doing better with you nephew. This was the first thing I learned dealing with depression "Don't Believe What You Think". And within it is a gift....it pushes us to look deeper in ourselves and learn who we are and what gifts we have to share with the world. It also teaches us compassion for anyone in pain.

I was depressed because I was surrounded by toxic people who abused me. I don't recall any happy memories of my childhood and teenage years. Both my parents suffered from a mental illness and they had addictions too. I may not feel happy today but I am resilient and I move on with my life. When I tell people I am depressed they avoid me and treat me like I have leprosy.

Loved it, because in this 4 minute video Mel condenses the 2 key elements to beat the vicious spiral of depression. 1) Movement, 2) Ignore how you feel. And the best way to start movement in spite of your feelings (as far as I know) is the 5 second rule. She unwittingly has found a trick to out-wit 6 million years of evolutionary biology. This is a massive feat, and could (hopefully) improve the lives of millions of people, and who knows (?) reduce some health care costs, because movement can not only be good for the mind, it does wonders for overall health: Think obesity, diabetes, heart desease and a host of other illnesses caused by our modern day sedentary lives. Well done Mel!

This is very interesting. It might be difficult to do, but all those that are suffering from depression are doing it already. I suck, 12345 yes I do. Instead, 12345 lets go for a walk etc. I dont think that just the 5 seconds are important, but that you actually do something to change. Walk another way. Since you already doing it down the drain, why not try to do it another way? Same thing. Got nothing to loose, if it does not work everything still sucks and you have lost nothing. Does that make sense? Another trick that you can use, and that I use myself is to get yourself in order. Like this guy here, cut your hair, shave and put on something else. I know I know..but it really helps! Look somewhat neat and feel somewhat better.

I'm definitely not depressed. But most of the time there's no synchronization in between my thoughts and emotions, which are mostly blank. I know I should want to try harder, but there's always the feeling that there's gonna be no point in trying, and I'll end up the same way eitherway. I feel like this ever since a little over a month, when I decided to quit all my hobbies to focus on my examinations as I had been spending way too much time on my hobbies. I used to write a lot of code, and my projects and my progress on them used to be a source of self-esteem for me, and now that I don't, it's all completely different. I don't really feel like I have the strength to do what it takes now. I'm not sad or anything, just quite blank. I've tried to use reward systems and all sorts of study techniques, none of which work for me any longer.

Very nice video. One more suggestion. To feel better reduce negative thoughts. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. When taking a walk, when reading, before sleep etc observe your breath sensations. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Counsellor.

Never have had an issue with depression... but some great advice here. BUT... I gotta say, the dynamic here between this adult and his mother really gives me the willies. WATCH what his mother does while Mel is talking. She refuses to let this young man grow up. (Also possible he has manipulated her into this position. But they have some pretty tangled crap together.) Who has conditioned who here? Lady... glad you love your kid, and want him to do better in life... but when are you going to quit treating him like the helpless little boy you and he seem to believe he is? Sad how parents destroy their children by trying to protect them from THEIR fears, and turn their kids into "helpless victims".

He said to me..(not verbatim, cause it was so long ago I don't remember the words) "you want medication, ok fine I'll give you f$^%^%ing mediation, (proceeds to scribble on a prescription slip furiously then slams the paper down) here, here's your damn medication, I want you to take this, fill it, put it in your medicine cabinet and I don't want you to touch it, I want you to look in the mirror every morning and say "not today, maybe tomorrow, but damn it not today, I 'm not going to feel like this" and I want you to get your f$^%ing shit together cause you got 3 kids that need you". don't you know I was sobbing like a baby but I did exactly what he said and in 6 months I was a completely different person, I know how it feels to be at the lowest there is and I REFUSE to ever feel like that again. I am a powerful positive person today because I got the kick in the ass that I needed. I only wish I remembered that doctors name because I owe him big time and would love to thank him. if I can do it ANYONE can. YOU GOT THIS, ALL OF IT!!!!

WOW. That's a very powerful share. How fortunate to have a doctor willing to give a damn enough to say those kinds of things to you.

Great that this worked for you- but it's important to realize that there is a big difference between chemical depression and depression that is a result of sadness or events. Chemical depression needs more than positive thinking. I think the ideas in this video are extremely helpful for both types, but without meds, some people could never even entertain her suggestions.

I don't know if it would help but try minimalising your surroundings as much as possible. Simplify your life/surroundings. I think 'stuff' has the ability to sap a persons spirit.❤

I overcame depression long time ago but the personality features in me that caused me to get depressed still lingers in me.. I have been getting therapy for a really long time now but one thing I realized is that you should be your own therapist first. You should diagnose yourself first, and the imporatnt thing is you should be able to do that ofcourse. Ofcourse with the help of therapy experience, I'm now able to see myself from afar, from a point of observation. I can see the thinking patterns I have like perfectionism (which is a killer thought) or things like that. They were the habits that got me into depression at the beginning, 7 years ago, and you can't ever delete them from your DNA completely. The thinking patterns or habits are still there. You just should recognize them and they get silent or lose their effect. Things like perfectionism or the habit of overthinking, always blaming others. What I mean is, even if you aren't depressed anymore, some things are still hard to do because, like you say in the video, your inner self-conscious voice tells you that they are. It tells you you can't do this or that thing. I have it in me and I recognize it. Therefore I believe I'm gonna overcome it some time soon.
