Fran Drescher doesn’t get the credit for being a comic actor on par with Lucille Ball. She is so damn talented!

I'm so confused by the accusation of that op-ed that the show doesnt portray jewish women as as sexy as gentile women. The fact everyone drools over Fran is one of the most reoccurring jokes

The Nanny is a show you can rewatch repeatedly, it's always got something witty to notice

The relationship (if you can call it that, which I believe you can) between Fran and Maxwell's first wife is so sweet. She loves those kids like her own, but is never so jealous as to want them to forget their mother who passed. Maxwell will ALWAYS love her, and he loves Fran too. She gives the two her blessing from the afterlife because Fran is a great person who will make her family happy.

I never minded that The Nanny followed most of the typical will-they-won't-they sitcom beats. As you said, it wasn't meant to be innovative, it was just supposed to be a fun show, and it sure was. I kind of see it as a fairytale for and from the 90s (Drescher once called her vision a 'Sound of Music for the 90s'), and fat jokes and people-who-need-therapy-are-all-kooks jokes aside, I feel like it aged better than Friends.

The nanny should get same popularity as Seinfeld , friends , fresh prince of Bel air . They got so many funny characters and Fran and Charles had very good chemistry and also Daniel Davis and Lauren Lane.

Fran is an ICON - her role in the strikes are just as inspiring as her acting career. She’s been stubborn and passionate and I love that about her.

The outfits in this show were great. Not just Fran's.

I always thought Niles and CC actually did make sense to me romantically because most of the time, it felt like the remarks and jokes was friendly most of the time, i mean, they both had moments where it stepped over the line, and with the wealth and class differences, i see how it would have been downplayed into insulting, but i don’t know, i always thought it worked better than most.

Much like Golden Girls, this is comfort tv. I can put any episode on and enjoy it.

I thought I knew everything about this show, but the fact that Niles is Niles' last name shook me to my core.

As a fat person, Sylvia’s jokes never bothered me. The jokes weren’t always about her being fat but more about her love of food and it being so absurd. Donating a cake you licked the icing off of? Lol come on!

The Nanny (and Fran Drescher) is an American staple! So many Jewish writers, comics and actors struggled so that it could be possible for a girl like Fran to become America's darling. Now Fran is the president of SAG-AFTRA and many studio executives worst nightmare, but she'll always be this gorgeous, gregarious Goddess from Queens to me. Still can't believe Daniel Davis is from Arkansas. ❤❤❤❤

I think The Nanny being made of contradictions is what makes it such a beloved show for queer people. Many of us grow up having to learn the rules of gender and sexuality from the outside, we have to learn these things to fit in at first for survival and then as a kind power we uniquely hold. It also helps Fran Drescher is such a steadfast queer ally, I'm sure I'm not the only queer 90's kid who saw themselves in The Nanny to some degree even if we didn't understand what it was we saw.

Representation by just letting people be who they are and do the things they would normally do is major.

Fun fact: Does anyone remembers that movie "The Beautician and the Beast"? Fran played a character similar to the Nanny, so in Spanish, the film was retitled "La niñera y el presidente" (The Nanny and the President).

There is a moment in this show that has stuck in my mind forever. It was late in the run so Fran and Mr Sheffield were together and the same with Niles and CC. For reasons I don’t remember Fran was talking to a psychic and her predictions were coming true. The one Fran and Niles were worried about was one where Mr Sheffield would end up in bed with a “leggy blonde.” But when Niles ended up in in a bed with Sheffield for reasons I don’t remember he exclaims, “I was the leggy blonde!” It still makes me laugh. This show holds an inexplicable place in my heart. Maybe as a kid I appreciated the class dynamic. Who’s to say. Now I appreciate Fran Dresher for other reasons. To quote DS9, she’s more than a hero; she’s a union man.

So many great memories watching this show with my sister. Even though this show was definitely silly at times, there was something about it that felt so real. It really felt like a window into another world, I will always love Fran, the Nanny we all need, haha

Daniel Davis one of the few american actors who could convincingly act british. In fact so well it didn't even register to me at first that he was born in Arkansas.

This really does feel the funniest time to do this considering what good old Fran has been up to these past few months.

I was raised on The Nanny, it was such a great show. I think her fashion was so formative for me, all bold colors and slightly eccentric prints. I definitely think this show is why I love those things. Also the back-and-forth quips between Niles and CC definitely influenced my humor. But then again I also watched Frasier growing up xD

The appendectomy scene is one of the best moments in TV history. "Bucking for a raise?" Ahhhhh love Niles.

I adored this show growing up, watched it every week. It was really great to have a funny, female, Jewish lead actor to look up to and I think Fran Drescher is so incredibly sharp. And the theme song STILL SLAPS.

This is one of few sitcoms where I feel that every single element worked. The cast were all spotless, the writing was excellent, the humor and acting of such humor was top-notch. Plus it's one of few shows that got the will-they-won't-they trope right, because both relationships had an actual payoff. The supporting cast were all great too, especially Sylvia and Yetta. One of my favorite shows to this day!

As a British person, it is rather amusing that for a prim and proper posh English gentleman they gave him the surname Sheffield. Edit : this show was not on TV in the UK.

I'm Russian, so I had My Wonderful Nanny (Моя прекрасная няня) when I was very little, and I remember loving it so much, I still remember every word of the opening theme (which was also animated like the original), I remember the wedding episode very vividly and how happy I was. Russian nanny Vika was actually made to be Ukrainian, from Mariupol, and she moved to Moscow at 15. It makes my heart break how much everything has changed since 2004 when the 1st season came out. To keep the butler's British sense of humor the writers made it so our Niles, named Konstantin, used to work in the British Embassy. We had many celebrity cameos as well, even our own 7th season with original scripts. They even showed Vika's father in the flesh. I've been waiting for so long for you to do this retrospective, thank you so much Jose! I'm always amazed at how much of the original script the writers try to save in the adapted version. For example, I was on the floor when I realized that Russian 'Married with Children' adaptation kept the episode about Al's trans friend almost fully intact, with little to no changes!

One of my favourites from the 90's. Yoy wanted to see what Fran was wearing, the snarky lines Niles would throw at C.C and all the hilarious shenanigans. And it is such a comforting series 😊

I'm so excited for this. So many aspects of Fran Fine's character reminds me of my mother, who was another bold working class girl from the outer boroughs (except Italian and from the Bronx, tho she raised me in Queens)

I think the appeal of Niles and CC can only be appreciated if you like characters to be in relationships that are interesting instead of relationships that are aspirational or even realistic. It’s interesting to see characters who dislike each other but are also drawn to each other, and like being around one another as much as they hate it. Characters who are both opposites in some regards but alike in others, which creates this push and pull as their growing tension forces them to confront their fundamental differences and learn how to get over them. Their brand of enemies to lovers is incredibly popular in romance and fandom spaces (the exact fans with the most influence over a show like The Nanny). And it still is! A lot of typical sitcom tropes are still very popular in those spaces today, though theyre treated with an affectionate nod to how cheesy and overdone they can be It’s not meant to be realistic, but very much leaning into the drama and entertainment factor lol

Wow I can’t believe you did it. This was my family’s favorite show growing up. We all had separate favorite tv shows we loved more, but this is the one we could put on and could satisfy everyone. It was basically our digital campfire. We used up whole blank tape of to record a Nanny marathon, commercials and all, and we just watched that thing over and over again.

This was my most wanted and awaited José retrospective and it did not disappoint. The Nanny is my all time favorite sitcom, I watched the reruns of it almost obsessively as a teen and always love coming back to it. As someone who grew up Jewish, I definitely saw a lot of my family in the Fines, and I feel the show had a whole lot of heart.

I hated how they changed Max's sister in later seasons, but I also get what they were trying to convey. She was far more endearing in her debut episode

I went to Catholic school during elementary, so there was no bus for me to take. I would often get up, lazily pull on my uniform, skip breakfast because I was too sleepy to be hungry, then trudge my way down to my mom's room where either Dark Shadows or The Nanny would be on. There was usually just enough time to catch the full episode before my mom would herd me into the car to get to school. I loved Angelique's period costume and sausage curls (in fact, I think her death scene sparked my enduring love of flowy, teal chiffon dresses ...), but Fran was an icon, and The Nanny was always more upbeat and peppy for my tired self. I have several distinct memories of draping myself over clean baskets of laundry yet to be folded and watching the theme dong while humming along, trying not to fall asleep half tucked into a makeshift bed of soft towels and sweaters that smelled fresh and clean, perking up slowly as I laughed at the antics on screen. I have such a fondness for the show. And while I have no inclination for motherhood or caregiving, Fran was unapologetically proud of her femininity in a way that didn't feel overbearing or diminutive. I didn't think about it then, but it is indisputable her brazen fashion, honest emotions, and bold personality helped combat all the subliminal woman-hating and self-loathing instilled by Catholicism. I mean, not enough that I didn't have to go through years of therapy, but enough that I could at least outwardly challenge the shame laid thick onto all parts of womanhood, even while internally struggling to define what type of woman I wanted to be. I still haven't figured it out yet, but I at least came to reconcile my love of fashion, crafting, cozy cups of tea, and soft things doesn't have to contradict my love of playing video games, building computers, woodworking, and traipsing around in the dirt. And of course, I was also poor growing up. Still am, actually. Which, going to a private school, made me and my sisters the odd ones out. I grew up feeling an invisible wall between my peers and myself, and I never learned how to smash through that. But at the very least, it was a rare treat to see a "lower" class woman playing the leading role, and not written entirely to be the butt of the joke. The out-of-touch elites were played for laughs as often as Fran's crassness, and I appreciated that so much.

Niles and Fran's friendship was for some reason such a nice thing to have in the show. It reminded me of me and my best friend, two sassy straights gossiping

This show will always hold a special place in my heart. Not only is it hilarious and so well done it was also the first thing my freshman college roommate and I bonded over. One of the cable channels would run marathons one Saturday a month so we would curl up and binge it together. Sad I lost touch with her because we had so much fun watching it.

I always loved the Nanny. It was a part of my childhood and I remember watching the shows final. I know the to shows are very different, but I can't help but think of the Nanny as the 90's equivalent of I Love Lucy and can't help but see similarities in he comedy and certain elements between the two shows.

One of my favorite shows growing up and even now. Fran Drescher is a brilliant comedienne. “The Nanny” really is a spiritual successor to “I Love Lucy”, which is one of the highest compliments I can give it.

This was such a great retrospective. I watched The Nanny all the time back when it was on Nick at Nite. The humor was so good and the chemistry with the cast was really solid too. I'm glad that you brought up the running gag with Fran's mother. I hate fat jokes in general, but that gag always felt weird to me because the character never actually looked fat to begin with. She just liked to eat a lot. Some gags certainly haven't aged well, but the comedy does still generally work well. I kind of liked it when Fran and Maxwell finally got together. While the issues behind the scene does further explain it, there's only so much you can do with characters constantly pining for each other with will they/won't they drama. They arguably spent too long teasing the relationship before they could actually become a couple and get married. It's hard to say if having them get married sooner would have helped the show last longer, especially when I think TV exclusives tend to prefer teasing relationships rather than actually having to write relationships. Six seasons was still a good run and I remember being pretty happy with the finale itself. Boy Meets World and The Nanny were the two sitcoms I had hoped that you'd eventually do retrospectives on when I first discovered your channel, so I'm really happy that you did. I'm sure that I'll enjoy any future sitcom retrospectives too.

I watched The Beautician and the Beast bc of the nanny. The dogs relate to me. Almost teared up. Also, the show reminded me of a cousin since she was a nanny in a similar situation. Sadly, died from cancer during the whole covid situation.

My own dog lived to be almost 20 and I 100% felt the end of the Chester poem. It really does come too soon.

The Nanny is the only sitcom I can watch repeteadly anytime anywhere and still have a good time no matter what episode is on... Aside from that animated special and the spin-off episode.

When the strike started and I think, it was revealed that Fran Drescher was the leading role for the union, many were surprised. After seeing this retrospective which talks about what a power-woman she is, I am no longer surprised. She really ran her own then and now!

I grew up watching this show with my father. It had so many re-runs on German TV that I would rewatch the show several times. In the end, I could even memorize whole conversations. I should really watch this with my husband and see if he would enjoy it.

My brother was a writer for The Nanny. He created the character of Yetta specifically for Anne Morgan Gilbert. The SAG AFTRA strike has been settled but there are a number of actors who are not happy with the terms.

This show looks so delightful and just watching the retrospective was comforting even though there is no nostalgia for me. There may be in the future once I watch it! In the interviews Fran Drescher is so charismatic as well that I couldn’t help but smile, too and that speech at the strike really turned me into a fan, having never watched anything she was in at this moment.
