Hello and welcome to Sunset Seekers! My name is Mike and I hope that you find this video informative and helpful, especially if you are having difficulty learning how to back your rig in to the RV site. I want to first encourage you by saying that you are not alone! I have attempted to give you some helpful tips and tricks I have learned from personal experience that I hope will make you more confident the next time that you find yourself facing the dreaded back-in spot at your next campground!
Pulling in tight on the spot, turning your wheel to the left, being careful not to jackknife, straightening and repositioning, and taking your time are some of the things covered in How to Back in a 5th wheel.
Furrion Back-up Camera: amzn.to/3DTDfpy
A good backup camera can make the difference in helping you to back in your rig at the campsite, storage facility, or parking lot, and many RV's are being manufactured with a mount that is pre-wired for this back-up camera: amzn.to/3DTDfpy
There is also a slightly smaller and less expensive version of this camera: amzn.to/3jMVPru

How to Back in a 5th Wheel (Demonstration for backing all types of trailers) can be used for:
How to back an RV
how to back a travel trailer
how to back a camper
how to back a 5th wheel
backing an RV
backing a travel trailer
backing a camper
backing an RV
Demonstrations In How to Back a 5th Wheel Trailer include:
Blind-Side Backing
Strong-Side Backing
How to back a trailer into campsite on the passengers side.
How to back a RV into a drive on the passengers side
As stated in How to Back in a 5th Wheel (Demonstration for backing all types of trailers), practice is critical to successful backing, and big empty parking lots make excellent practice areas.
Possibly the most important fact in How to Back in a 5th Wheel (Demonstration for backing all types of trailers) is it does NOT matter how long it takes you to back or how many times you must pull forward and back again as long as you end up backing into the site you want.

I've noticed that other rv owners don't get upset when someone is taking too long. They generally offer to help them. That's my experience anyway.

Although it's true that most RV owners are patient and understanding, it adds to the stress level to have anyone (even a patient person) waiting on you. My skill level has increased quite a bit since I made this video so I don't worry about it as much anymore.

That’s really good to know as we’re about to pick up our first RV a rockwood and go to France in it. We’re in the UK so our roads aren’t as big as the states neither are our camping grounds.

I love this video!!! It reminds me of how hard it was to learn backing a trailer in truck driving school. It's amazing that there aren't more videos about this subject. I don't think people really appreciate how hard it is to get backing right. For most people, backing skills don't come naturally.(myself included) Thanks for the vid. Love you guys.

Nicely done! I've been pulling a 5th wheel for years and have gotten pretty good at backing. But I always fly by the seat of my pants. More intuition and guess work than anything else. This gives me something to think about. I recently purchased a new (much longer) 5th wheel. I think I'm going to go get a couple cones and find an empty parking lot. Thanks for the time and effort you put into this! The next time I back this thing, I'll look like a pro!

I definitely know the value of getting in some practice at a parking lot with the cones! It's just a good idea even for someone like you that has loads of experience. A new rig may handle a lot different from what you are used to. I have learned a great deal since making this video but I know that I could still use a little practice! Thank you for the kind words and for watching!!

I've been pulling a 33ft 5th wheel for 3 years now and have become moderately adequate backing into most sites. Although I tend to use as much space across from the spot as I can. I watched your video after several exhausting attempts backing into a camp site or our storage location. It was very helpful!! I'm on the way to pickup our new rig that is several feet longer and finally found your video again. After watching it several times I feel like I'm ready.

I just want to take the time to thank you for this video. I’ve pulled a travel trailer my whole life and we just got a 5th wheel a few months ago, and I’ve struggled to back it in a lot correctly. I’ve searched and searched for videos that gives a proper instruction on how to back a 5th wheel, and none were as good and helpful as yours. This is a great tutorial that you’ve taken the time to provide for a lot of people, thank you. I went out and practiced today and got my trailer in the spot correctly the first time following your instructions. 👍🏻

I’m going to be starting out this year with my 20’ bumper pull, but I’m starting my research now so I can upgrade to a fifth wheel in a year or two (depending on finances of course). I learned years ago that when backing a trailer “right is left & left is right” and that has served me well over the years. However I have never pulled, or backed, a fifth wheel. So I appreciate very much that you are sharing your knowledge with us. I’m starting my education with hitches at this point. Brands, styles, weight ratios, stability, etc. so maybe some day I can thank you for encouraging me “way back when “. Bless you and your family. May you always have safe travels with great adventures.

We pray blessings to you and your family as well!

Great video! One thing that I learned when I was in the military was to place my hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and then turn it in the direction I wanted the trailer to go. This precludes the driver from having to think of which way he/she needs to turn the steering wheel to make the trailer go in the direction needed.

Lining up the distance forward with the cone and the rear edge of the 5er on the tighter turn into the 12 space seems to have helped a lot. - Thanks for that pointer. The issue I usually have is that the road in front of the site is not wide enough to make the turn or to pull forward, especially if there are campers with trucks parked directly across from the spot I'm trying to back into!

Recently upgraded from a 36 pull behind to a 40 fifth wheel. It certainly is a different adventure from the 10,200 to the 17K in the weight but the backing of the two different style coaches seams to be a bit different as well, which brings me to you tube this morning and needing to get it into my RV driveway with only a couple feet width to spare. Started my adventure last night after dark. Then decided to head over to the local parking lot and "give it a try". The reaction from one to the other is pretty extreme, it seems so far. Now th sun is out and I need to make this happen. Your video has given me some great information. I appreciate you. I'm no beginner in backing up a trailer, just a fifth wheel. I think I'm dealing with the space difference behind the wheels as my obsticle at this time and practice always makes the perfection.

I did learn something here.... is when you turn your wheel all the way to the left and started to back up... I learned by looking at your video when you turn the wheel to the right was pretty much when the right front peek corner of the RV was pointing at the center of your window and I thought that would be an excellent marker to use the pointy corner of the RV and we're at mines up on the window and then get used to it like shooting pool over and over again, I would also recommend only practicing with a 12-foot wide, because that covers all places

Hi, Thank you so much for providing this awesome video. I've looked at several other video's on youtube and found yours to be the easiest to understand. You put everything into perspective by just saying everything in plain everyday English. I just purchased a 33 ft. travel trailer and the experience I had with my wife bringing it home and backing it in the driveway really gave me a lack of confidence about future trips to RV camps. With watching your video and time and practice, I think that I will be ok. Once again, I really do appreciate your video. I liked it so much, I clicked on the subscribe button.

Thank you so much for the kind words and for subscribing!! It brings me great joy to know that you found this video to be helpful! My greatest hope in making this video is that it would be useful to newbies like me! My skills have improved greatly in the 7 months since I made this video and I know that yours will too! I can totally relate to that feeling of incompetence when things aren't going well and the tension that can arise between you and your wife as a result--been there! I would certainly recommend finding a church parking lot or another good place to practice. You will be amazed how much your confidence level rises with a little practice and no stress. You'll be a pro before you know it!

Before you start backing place both hands at the bottom of the wheel if you want the trailer to go left your left hand goes up and to go right the right hand goes up. Simplest way to remember.

I watched this video 8 months ago and practiced a number of times. I had bought a lot in a RV golf resort that requires 90 degree backin on a narrow street. I have a long bed 4 passenger Dodge dually and 30’ 5th wheel. Dynamics a little different because of longer truck and shorter RV. I did a good job of getting it in, had to dodge a tree, and neighbor spotted me but I would have been fine anyway. I use cones for guidance even if I can use a curb or driveway for site line. I guess it’s a comfort factor. I live in a cul-de-sac, I have to complete a circle before I can line up and back up and I continue to you use cones even after 2 years. BTY I LOVE my DODGE dually!

I'll always be a Ford man but Dodge trucks (aren't they called "RAM" trucks now?) are pretty awesome and have won Motor Trend's truck of the year like 6 times in a row now I think. Thanks again for watching and for the feedback!!

Very good video. I have struggled with the back in procedure, blind or strong side, for some time. I'm not terrible at it but I just don't have that one, two, three ... step process in concrete. This video gives clear insight, with markers, as to the whole process. Looking forward to scripting my own process based on this. Thanks!!!

This is a great informative video. You didn't try to give out too much information. I was most curios about how you determined when to start your turn. I would also like to see a video on making turns at intersections, mostly right turns as they are usually tighter if turning onto a single lane road.

Thank you so much for the kind words and for watching!! I positioned my rig about 3 feet forward of the spot and turned my wheel all the way to the left to begin my turn into the spot. That part is pretty straight forward but when to roll out of the turn depends on a number of different factors like: the turning radius of your rig, the size and length of the spot, and any obstacles that may be in the way. As far as turning at intersections, I'm afraid I can't really give you any more wisdom other than to make as wide a turn as you can. I'm still a newbie at this and I'm learning as I go along! I plan on putting together more future videos on the subject as my knowledge and experience grows.

Thank-you for this video. I’ve had my 33 ft 5th wheel 3 years. We take it out at least once a month. This past 2 months I’ve lost all confidence I had built up, backing into sites. Even the easy ones. Last month after 5 failures in a really tight campsite and getting frustrated, I drove around the park 5 times to let cars pass. I was finally rescued by a truck driver. He put it in in one try, perfectly between 4 trees. He gave me some tips that day that I have found are very much in line with your video. The wife and I have taken the trailer out twice this week and my confidence is returning. One more practice in a few days should do it! My hats off to you and your step by step instructions. It works!

Outstanding! I'm so glad to hear that your confidence is returning and that you found this video to be helpful!! My father-in-law is a truck driver and I've gotten some help from him over the years as well!! I can certainly relate to the frustrating day that you described--That is the whole reason that I made this video a few years ago--I had a very similar day to yours at a state park where the camping loop was one-way and as soon as I started trying to back in to one of the most difficult sites I've ever attempted before, there were 3 or 4 RVs that pulled in to the one way loop behind me and were waiting on me to back in (as if I didn't have enough problems!! LOL!) I've learned a lot since making this video but since I am not a full-timer and only camp once a month on average, I often times still feel like I'm out of practice when I get to the campsite.

@richardmccrary819
@richardmccrary819 2 жыл бұрын
@@lloydthomas2896 basically same as the video. …Learn the turning ability of your truck (my steering wheel turns 1 3/4 turns), practice different scenarios, have spotter use agreed upon hand signals. Have spotter watch the tail swing. Make small adjustments so you don’t over steer. Figure out how sharp you can turn your rig. (I can do 90deg with my Pullright sliding hitch) Get out and look, several times if you have to!

BTW, a funny thing happened when I was practicing the last time. Some guy showed up and was distracting me with pointers on how to back in. He stayed at my drivers window making suggestions. (just like when camping!) When he saw me nail it in one shot with 12 ft wide cones and an 85deg back in, he got real quiet, then asked how I learned that. I turned him on to your video!!!

New Sub.here. We have a 38' Montana with a SD 350 crew cab long bed one very long rig😂 I look forward to backing in (once I got more confident in my ability). We find that the back in spots are usually nicer in most parks! Now that I have been schooled by you I can't wait to get back out and get after it!👍🏻You my friend are a very good teacher! I think a lot has to do with the distance from axle to rear of rig. We did have an issue at a state park where the road was too narrow with trees on the driver's side and couldn't make the turn in. Had to find another spot that flooded after it rained the next day. We still had a great time!!! Keep the instruction videos coming!✌🏻️🎅🏻🎅🏻🎅🏻

Awesome vid! Great details. Have had a bumper pull the last three years and am pretty good at backing her up. Picking up the 5th wheel in a couple of weeks and my understanding is that they are easier to back..once you figure them out. First trip out is 2 weeks after we pick it up so your info is spot on for my timing. Thanks for putting it out there!

When I went from a travel trailer to a 5th wheel, I discovered that the actual towing on the road was much smoother, but there was a learning curve to getting around at the campground. This video really does help grasp the concept. One thing I noticed with the 5th wheel is you have to be a LOT more concerned with the height of it and overhead obstacles like tree branches, etc. Don't ask me how I know this...lol

You are correct on the terminology " Blind Side backing" The shorter the trailer the more responsive it is when turning into a parking spot. I will only suggest Blind Side backing once you have driver side backing down packed. It's ok to have someone spot you when doing Blind Side backing. Better safe than sorry. I'm a class A Commercial Driver. I drive a triple axle tractor and only pull 53' trailer's everyday. Some places I pick up at I can only backup on the Blind Side. I can only suggest practice, practice, and practice! I like your video, great information.
