Possibly my most requested topic - my thoughts on the Supro 1622RT. I've owned this amp for over two years now and in that time it's become my go-to gigging platform pretty much every single time. Today I'm going to share a bit of insight into how I use the amp as well as plenty of playing samples to show it off with different guitars and pedals.

The 1622RT Tremo-Verb is a feature-rich update to the coveted late-60’s Supro 1 x 10 combo platform. This compact, Class-A, 6973-powered bruiser pushes a LOUD 25 watts through our custom-made 10” speaker to capture the old-school Supro magic in an amp you can easily haul around to gigs. Tremo-Verb is, without a doubt, pound-for-pound the most potent tube amp in the Supro line.
The Tremo-Verb’s feature set, blue rhino hide tolex and compact physical dimensions are drawn from the original combo of the mid 60s, with its power plant borrowed from its larger brother, the 1624T Dual-Tone. This modern incarnation of the Supro Tremo-Verb has been enhanced with enough Class-A power to gig out alongside a pounding drummer and bassist.
Following traditional Supro fashion, the new Tremo-Verb’s power-tube tremolo comes after the reverb pan, lending an ethereal shake and wobble to the enveloping wash of tube-driven spring reverb. This amp has ample headroom to use with pedals, maintaining exceptional clarity and sparkle even above 12-o’clock on the volume knob as the amp rolls over into glorious all-tube overdrive.

I was looking forward to this! Great review Alex. It's cool to hear an authentic tube overdrive for once. I think as guitarists a lot of us get so used to using pedals these days. The tube drive is REAL

Ricky Gomez I had only ever turned this amp up once before, and it had to be in a different room. I’d say it was educational for myself to experience that. You can hear I was a bit uncomfortable haha. It’s always good to put yourself in those situations from time to time.

@@AlexPriceMusician Hey im shure it would, but after searching for different options i came acros the Vitory V40. Its based in the blackface and tweed Fender sounds. 40w o headroom and the great thing is i found one locally and not that expensive. Would like to try a Spro do, i will go to a store and try it.

I've had my Supro tremoverb for a few years now, amp sounds great, built like a tank and no issues. Very reliable amp.

6 years with mine and no issues. I can’t say that about the Fender amps I’ve had.

Awesome demo. I have been looking for Supro amp for a long time but worry about the reliability of this amp. But look like it held up great in your case.

Glad it was helpful! One thing I wanted to mention in this video that I forgot to was the criticism about the tube ports being mounted directly to the PCB. It sounds worrisome, but in my own experience I've toured and played probably 200 shows on this amp at this point and haven't had a problem. I don't even keep it in a road case. Thanks for watching

Nice playing. Came to see if you would mention any ampnoise from the reverb? But forgot all about that and just enjoyed the playing. I have the 1642 RT version. Atb Sofus, from Denmark

Yeah the spring reverb puts out a fair bit of hiss unfortunately. I can’t recall if it came from the factory like that or if it developed at some point. It’s a great spring tank though and I don’t mind it.

How did you end up going with the Trem-o-Verb instead of Comet or other model? Any experience playing the other models? Good demo man!

I had played the Blackmagic model the day I bought this, just because that was one of the other amps in the store at the time but obviously I went with this one. My local music shop was closing sadly and this was one of the last amps in the store so I got it for a good price. I really didn't put any research into this decision haha. It sounded good, so I bought it!

@@AlexPriceMusician sounds amazing, I am huge Supro fan. I have 2 Comets and the Neptune. Had the Saturn mkII which was a great amp but returned it and grabbed the Neptune for the 2x12. How'd you like the Black Magick ? Almost grabbed a BMR twice but really dig the Comet, easily my fav. Supro

@@richardjames6623 I think I remember that the clean tone just wasn't as nice and full as the Tremoverb. It did have onboard overdrive as a plus but I wasn't looking for that really. It was still a good amp though! Really I would've been happy with either but the Tremoverb suited my situation more.

@@AlexPriceMusician Thanks Alex for the info, just subscribed! Trying to just stick with what I have but the Tremoverb is calling me. Btw, I just got the DrZ attenuater sounds fantastic with both my Supros. Like the Tremoverb, the Neptune is 25 watts so it tames it. To me sounds better then a Master Volume like on the Black Magick Reverb.

hello, great review man ! i have the same amp and i have a question... on the back of the amp there is a jack output (or input?), i dont know if this is for an external cab or for a footswitch? what do you think ? thank you

Hi Leo - actually, there are too 1/4" jacks in the back. One for each of the reasons you asked. You should see the further one back has the internal speaker already plugged in, though you can unplug that and use an external cab if you want. The one closer to the outside is for the TRS footswitch. Tip controls the reverb and ring controls the tremolo.

Izzy A Not sure how the 1642 is different than the 1622 in this video. I haven’t heard of that model. If it’s anything like this one, it’s a great amp.

Onion Pierogi yep! I’ve often fallen in and out of liking that sound but it’s what I have right now and it gets the job done. Maybe some day I’ll have a devoted amp for my archtop

Amazing bedroom tone! I struggle to imagine this amp cutting through the mix. DO you play with a band? any feedback on that?

Hi Antonio, This amp has been great for low volume practicing and for gigs. When you turn it up it takes on a bit of a different character than it does when you're playing quietly though. I've played with many different ensembles with this amp and haven't had any problem being heard. If your drummer is totally unreasonable and playing really loudly though I could see it being an issue not having enough headroom for a clean sound.

Ehhh, hard to say. The best thing you could do to get more volume out of this amp is to get a second extension cab. Honestly though this amp has always been plenty loud enough to run wet effects into the front of it with a reasonable drummer. It’s a great clean platform.

Awesome vid! Definitely not 25 watt Class A though. A pair of 6973s can theoretically generate about 10 watt in Class A, but it'd take a relatively speaking huge transformer, and the great sound you're getting when you push it is the sound of an overdriven class AB amp, which is what most people would want anyway. Practically no commercial Class A amp over 10 watt (and very few over 5-6 watt) has ever been marketed, and that's for a good reason: Class A amps produce less than half the wattage than a similar Class AB, it will draw more power, and it will need a much bigger and more expensive Output Transformer. The main reason to go Class A is that you can use a single power tube, and for (very) low wattages the added cost of the transformer is less relevant. Also, a 25 watt class A amp will only be perceived as about twice as loud as a 2.5 watt amp. So basically for anything bigger than a Champ style amp it makes no sense to go Class A. Doesn't change the fact that your amp sounds great though! :-)

A lot of people confuse amplifier classes with sound quality, but the three relevant classes for tube amps (class A, class B and class AB) relates to electronic efficiency: in class A the tubes are on at all times, in class B each tube in a pair amplifies only half the waveform and is off halv the time. Pure class B causes massive crossover distortion, so is not used for audio. Class AB means that each tube is on for more than half the time, but less than all the time. This allows for a much higher wattage given the type of tubes, but also less power consumption (and thus smaller power transformer) and more efficient cooling of the output transformer and lower risk of core saturation (and thus a much more compact and non-airgapped output transformer, saving a lit of money and weight). For more on the wonderful worlds of tube amps I'd recommend the great Valve Wizard website, specifically geared towards guitar amps...
