Suspiria is a powerful experience and it stays with you for a long time! It's a shame that not many people got to see it because of poor distribution...

I think a lot of people are accustomed to a storytelling style that I would describe as efficient, or optimized. They want every scene to contribute to the plot. They don't want anything extraneous. They have shit to do and that's understandable. But I think it cuts off a lot of possibilities. If a movie has time to breath, like 2018 Suspiria (and the director's previous movie Call My By Your Name for that matter), the creators of the film can spend time building mood, making you feel present in the time and place, giving a bit more intimacy with the characters. In a horror movie, this means that the scare scenes have this penetrating quality where a status quo is being disrupted, and you become overwhelmed with a sort of looming dread and anxiety that you just can't communicate in 1 scene. In a romance, it lets you feel familiar yet difficult to rush feelings like longing, bittersweetness, or that twist in your stomach when you fear you're wasting every second you aren't spending with someone. I'm a full on Luca Guadaignino fan now. He provides something that's hard to find, and he always leaves me a little haunted even when it's not a horror movie.

I think that a lot of people is accustomed to be spoon fed, most things explained, not a lot of space to imagine or feel the movie

Confession: I've not seen this movie, but I'm absolutely in love with seeing you just sitting down and discussing movies. It's surprisingly engaging and interesting; I actually really want to see this movie because I really love kind of trippy, doesn't fall into the dichotomy of "good or bad," "like or dislike" when it comes to movies. You're doing great May ^-^

I noticed you were feeling kinda down on twitter about your KZfaq stuff, so I wanted to list some of the things I like about this particular video. (I’m sleepy so I hope this isn’t too disjointed.) -how you incorporate your education, experience, and your passions into how you think about movies and how you present those thoughts -your sense of humor -You come across as genuine. I like the ~parasocial~ intimacy of just sitting in front of the camera and talking to us -you just have a really nuanced approach to stuff and I feel like that separates you from some other videos -ok so I’m not into horror, but I’m into how you talk about things. And how you talk about the ideas that are going on in the movie and stuff -you have nice lighting, background, and color stuff I’m sorry you’re in a slump. I hope things pick up for you soon! Healing and progress isn’t always linear so please don’t beat yourself up or anything

Any movie that’s just super campy, crazy, metaphorical, confusing, complicated, and overwhelming I just love. I love seeing things that are different and weird that most mainstream audiences wouldn’t enjoy or understand. I did not expect to love this movie as much as I did. I mean, I usually hate most remakes and reboots. But this one...... this movie was it's own whole vibe and I've become obsessed. This movie moved me and made me feel things that I haven't from a movie since, idk when... It was seriously a work of art in my eyes. Everything about this movie was so perfect and unexpected. So hunting, horrific, beautiful, and brutal. It was "slow" in the best ways, which made the brutal moments so much more intense. Mixing dance, music, and witchcraft just speaks to my very soul. Ugh, it's so so so good!!!..... It almost has a Lynch feeling to it, but in it's own way.

I'm a bit late commenting on this, sorry. Just wanted to say that there isn't a nonsense/irrelevant scene in this film. It's long (some might say boring), it's unconventional, and I know a lot of people have had trouble interpreting its themes - but those themes are there, and the seemingly peripheral stuff is intimately connected to the primary narrative by these themes. It is a film of many layers though, so it's understandable why folks don't always pick up on everything that's going on under the surface right away.

I found it amazing that in the scene with [I wanna call her Brunhilda, but no way that's her name] is in the mirror room while the main character is dancing elsewhere...if you've seen the movie, you know the one I mean. They DID NOT USE ANY PROSTHETICS. The actress was just both an amazing dancer and a contortionist and she DID THAT to her own body. I mean, there was a very deliberate use of lighting and makeup etc. but all the shit was the actress contorting her body.

For about 4 years now when people ask me if a movie is good or bad, I've been saying "I can't judge movies right now, I just sort of experience them, and this was an X experience" (often X = confusing, which I save from being a total cop out by saying what I thought was interestingly confusing. I am as of now formally removing the 'right now' part... because this was an elegant expression of what's been getting at me. I don't like art as a product, and I don't like it as a class/education demo, and I don't like it as a proof of any membership. I don't like breaking things down by 'sins' or tropes. I like feeling what it did to me, what it seems to be trying to do, what it's doing to others, and digging into what that all tells me about us and art, as much as I am capable. And I hope this starts to be a thing. And I think 'lately' might have been right, at least in some sort of ebb and flow of trends? I do think when I was a wee thing in the 70s & 80s there was some analysis that was more like this, more about 'what just happened?!' and less checklisty, and it's what started me caring about movies (that and cheap art-house showings and having free time). Awesome vid. I am off to get your new trax. Much love, and here's to your life flowing back into a richer, better state!
@DarlingMissDarling

All this time later, I really enjoyed this comment and I often feel the same! I sometimes think that the "checklist-y-ness" (what are words?! lol) of how movies are often being judged may have to do with how the use of "tropes" have tended to become standard over time? I hope I made any sense at all, I just really loved this comment and having spawned from the late 70s myself, I can totally appreciate this viewpoint! Thanks for the brain stimulation even 2yrs later, ha! 👍🏾

So we had a unique experience on our first viewing and had no subtitles for any of the scenes spoken in German, and as such my girlfriend had a really cool take on another theme of the movie: Elitist isolationism leads to rot. The feeling was rather more pronounced when not being able to fully understand everything that was being said, to be fair.

as someone who has watched the movie a lot (with subtitles), I'd say you're absolutely right! I mean, the Berlim wall is literally hidding the view of the world outside from the academy entrance hall and I think some of Thom Yorke's lyrics for Suspirium might be referent to that.

I really get what you're saying about art here, like sometimes it's really hard to explain why you enjoy something so subjective and full of various moving parts and things you can pick out. I even went to art school and still find it hard often times to describe why I enjoy something. Everyone's unique experience with media/art is almost impossible to articulate with someone else because they'll never understand and can't because they aren't you. Only you will know what you mean. Even if you didn’t understand everything, You just genuinely love movies and the art of film making and it’s so refreshing to see someone just honestly and openly praise films sometimes.

These cold openings are getting progressively hotter much like yourself. EDIT: This film sounds like a very well done game of Vampire the Masquerade. And I mean that in a positive way.

I was kind of put off by this mostly because the lack of color. Not like I was thinking it would be a garbage fire or something like that, but whenever I looked at posters or trailers I just kept thinking "Oh, it's a horror reboot". Like, I couldn't think of a reason why I would be interested in seeing it as much as the original. Mostly because the striking visuals and colors felt like it was part of what made it a classic, despite the narrative being pretty straight be forward. I'll probably watch it at one point after watching you talking about it, and I think that's mostly the only reason I have, which feels kind of bad now that I think of it.

The thing is, Argento isn't really about visceral when you say this was "more visceral"...he does incorporate gore, but it's not "visceral" really, more an artistic statement. Particularly in that era, his gore is brutal, but it's almost kind of beautiful and it's aimed more at the intellectual than visceral experience, you're watching these horrible things happen but his art is in making them so beautiful you can't look away. Suspiria's skill was in presenting something akin to a fever dream, nothing looks or feels like it should in that movie, colors pop too crisply, the acting just feels disjointed and surreal and it's kind of like Eraserhead in that manner just on the other end of the spectrum than the black and white horror of early Lynch. Please don't think I'm suggesting one is "better", saying "oh, the original is more intellectual" in a pretentious way...both approaches work very well in art, they achieve the same basic result, in horror to terrify for example. Take as another example something I'd consider intellectual horror, Jacob's Ladder, The Mist or a movie I've always considered horror that people kind of look at me odd for Requiem for a Dream, and compare them to something I'd think of as more purely visceral like...Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer or Halloween. All are movies I'd consider seminal, utterly incredible cinematic experiences and I can't really say any are inherently "better" but they act on really distinct aspects of my person, all end in the same place, horror but the punch is kind of in the long term, the latter make me feel on a visceral intuitive level like I've been sullied, I come out feeling uncomfortable and like I need to "take a shower" and they stick with me that way. The former last, just the same, but it's more about involuntarily replaying scenes in my head because I feel like I'm unraveling new bits of horror over and over again. It all works, and it's all horror, and all takes it's own genius, it just plays with different parts of us to get to that goal point. It should also be noted I can think of some films that do both quite well, Salo for example is shot beautifully, it has an intellectual level but still left me feeling just awful after the fact because...well...it's Salo lol. Same with the more recent Martyr, not the remake but the original, just a nightmare to sit through, uncomfortable and awful in it's own right but it has this kind of spiritual bit to it with the madam and all that tugs on other parts of my brain too...all work brilliantly, they just have a different way of working. And no, I totally never intended this to be this long lol

I pretty much feel the exact same way as you haha. I left the theater angry saying "Why was that old man in it??" but at the same time, that scene at the end that you were discussing moved me so deeply that I was just sitting there after the movie ended in awe knowing that I just experienced something powerful.

So true in media arts Dario Argento on general was a huuuuge inspiration even in highschool. Tim Burton was my childhood, Argento for my teens. Sion Sono as I got older and more.

When people ask me if a movie is good or bad and I say "somewhere in between," they often assume I mean mediocre and boring. No, there is something else. There are movies that are frustrating and inconsistent and have moments of brilliance and moments of banality. I recently felt that way while watching the 1980 Canadian horror "The Changeling." Dario Argento's "Inferno" would be another example. It sounds like this remake of "Suspiria" can be added to the pile.
