I am totally surprised by this upgrade, in a good way. I was half expecting some fire breathing monster but instead got a DR with the same stock but with a lot more power everywhere (emphasis on the mid-range!). with the Cogent Dynamics suspension and Warp 9 wheels this is one amazing bike. Quick video of my first ride on a local road. almost all high gear and an eazy ride on waves of torque. I'm playing with the throttle to feel it pull and seat the rings.

Cool build. I miss my 05 DR650 very badly. I went with full suspension, stock bore to keep higher rpms,,that was the idea at least to rev out further. The webcam and the JE piston and the Mikuni TM40,,should of gotten the FCR for better tuneability. What I did so transformed that bike though. The look on my buddies with their big V twins when we left the red lights in those little impromptu drag races was priceless...Them watching a big thumper pull away in seconds. It wasn't about top speed being a big thumper..Just the torque and quick acceleration up to 90-100mph. Very fun bikes to work on as well as ride and very dependable as well.

I bought my slightly used 15 DR650 with your Cogent suspension front and rear already installed and I am amazed at how well it works off road! What is the latest on the DR 790? How many miles have been put on it? Is the vibration increased a lot from stock bore and what kind of gas mileage on the highway?

Thanks for the vid! Any more recent update on those higher temps? Do you think you may be reaching the upper limits of air/oil cooled? I commute(sometimes in stop/go traffic) about 200 mi/wk. Higher idle temps in between lights might be the thing that would keep me from doing this mod.

Lee H , I got the bike sorted jetting wise and it pulls better on the higher rpms now. The bike is a hoot because of the wide torque range. It isn't that high of HP. It really is everything I like about the DR "amplified". With the FCR, the throttle response is good. Tires are hard to keep on the bike. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for the kind words! I just changed back to the stock 15:42 final drive vs the 14:43. I think the bike is faster on acceleration and now is super comfortable cruising at 70 mph (calibrated trail tech indicated). Really not too bad up to 80. The bike wants to be over 50mph on mountain roads before fifth gear is selected. Not the "performance" shift point at full throttle to 5th gear is in the high 60s to even 70 mph. I'm liking it. I need to ride it more. May make another short video.

Changed to stock 15:42 and like it better as the engine is able to pull gears much longer and better. Thing woods riding with clutch slipping needs to be relegated to my KTM! @@user-tc2hu1mr3k yep, I fell faster! Still goes. It runs out of high gear in the video. My impression. I have done dyno testing of both DRs back to back. An issue is that the clutch gives up the grab at some point… I need to add extra clutch plates. New EBC plates and heavy duty Barnett clutch springs made a big improvement but only really strong for a couple rides before limiting the power. To be clear, I am not recommending this modification I like it and makes my own bike cool. A friend has built and owned the 900cc DR. Two friends have had the same bike. Lots of effort and expertise in that bike. Was it worth it? Each rider decides. I do love my DR.

@@codyf8511 I haven't found enough information for me to make an educated judgment. Straight up and not so educated I have to say, yes I'm concerned. I am running a very restricted exhaust which I just changed to a more free flow stinger in the LEO Vince and one ride makes me think it helped but more rides would be needed to be conclusive. I can't ride it this loud. I hate it loud, makes it no fun. I like it fun! I'll be experimenting with an FO40 titanium GSXR can. @@SmalltimR My calculation were bad. Should be more like 10hp. Quite abit of money for only that much more horsepower?
@SmalltimR
@SmalltimR 2 жыл бұрын
@@authentic4225 According to ProCycle's dyno chart, a stock DR puts out roughly 36hp, whereas the big-bore puts out 54, for a difference of about 18hp. Though I think it's important to note that HP is not as significant as torque in such applications, and that 52 ft/lb of torque is rather intense for a 370lb bike. With that said, I'd love to see the hp from a big valve kit, cam and larger carb coupled with the big bore. I'm guessing closer to 60hp when all is said and done :) ps. for contrast, the Tenere 700 which is a much heavier bike, puts out around 44lb/lb of torque at the wheel

Side by side it is enlightening. For sure the CC expansion without multi cylinder, rpm limits and valve area (along with mechanical durability) have not going to have a ton of horsepower.

Does this engine have the oversized valves?
@cogentdynamics
@cogentdynamics 2 ай бұрын
@@TheTroopertruck nope, I went with the stock valves. It would be interesting to see how the bike would perform with 650cc with high compression piston, a little hotter cam and the bigger valves with port improvements. In any case, in my opinion the engine HP will be a limited by the reliability. Power equals heat and stress on parts.
@TheTroopertruck
@TheTroopertruck 2 ай бұрын
@@cogentdynamics thanks for the reply, I just acquired a 2009 dr650 with 112000km and am considering the 790 as it probably needs an engine rebuild, I was reading through your responses and wondering if the bigger valves may have helped with the heat problem as you said the free exhaust helped, I am not decided on spending the money on the cam. But also considered the high compression 650 build as well
@cogentdynamics
@cogentdynamics 2 ай бұрын
@@TheTroopertruck keep in mind that your stock cylinder can be refinished like new for a couple hundred bucks. That and a high compression is a nice setup at a much more reasonable cost. The first video was (like a year or so) ran with a restrictive exhaust (I prefer quiet). Hot was an issue. Also, the clutch was slipping also as the big engine pushes everything. My other DR650 is still running stock and do still like that one fine also but without the worry.

@savagele

More power at the same peak RPM doesn't add top speed. You need more RPM to make more top speed, or regear.

Top Speed?
@cogentdynamics
@cogentdynamics 2 ай бұрын
Don’t know. I suspect the top speed will be very much the same as stock. Up hill and in a head wind it will improve. Gearing is a limitation as is the poor aerodynamic shape of the dual-sport. The 790 is designed for mid-range power. Top end hp becomes somewhat limited in the valve and port limits. The bike will go near 100 mph. That’s about it.
