The SvBony SV171 is an 8-24mm zoom eyepiece. That's quite a few focal lengths in one unit. SvBony was kind enough to give me this eyepiece for review and in this video I'll describe what it's like. I have used this with my Evostar 80ED and a StellaLyra 8" F12 cassegrain, which was fun!
I have done my best to remain as impartial and unbiased as possible in this review, but being transparent with you about where my kit has come from is important for me as you deserve as much information as you can get before making a purchase. I haven't been paid for this review, I was given the eyepiece as compensation.

Very doubtful concerning zooms but after your review, and the mention of price, decided to give it a go and purchased the 21 to 7mm. Used it last night with a Startravel 80. Very impressed, particularly as I did not have to alter focus going through the range. Colours seemed o.k. as well when swapping with a 21mm Baader Hyperion. With a 2x barlow impression was the same. It will come in handy for doubles and planets on my 200mm reflector. Always a bonus to think money has not been wasted. Without your review I would be none the wiser. Thank you indeed.

Honest and a good review Ruzeen! I would add that with a single focal eyepiece you will not only get a bit sharper image but batter contrast as well, but for $60 US it's just 1 eyepiece to carry around . Over SvBony don't make the highest quality products but usually for the money and for a newbe or a semi user a very good products at lower cost.

Thank you Christopher. Yes that's what I think is a beneficial and gold thing about SVBony. They make (what I reckon) is decent gear at a good price point for the beginner fleshing out their initial toolkit

Good review Ruz, I enjoy watching your channel! I'm more of a visual guy myself who enjoys taking images now and then. Personally I like the prime (fixed focal length) eyepieces because they are lighter and have much wider field of view. The Svbony red line EPs are almost 70 degrees and individually smaller, lighter and under £30 each.

Thank you Zarkuon, I'm glad you enjoy my content. I don't think I have many mainly visual users who watch my content especially as it's mainly geared towards photograph. Agree primes have a big place to be, lighter and such so I can imagine as a visual yser the SV171 isn't exactly up your alley?

Hi Ruz great video and nice to see you working on the SvBony product; underexposed in the UK & US reviews. This looks to be a nice product, but I think it lacks the T-adapter option, I would find that useful for FOV control on my DSLR I primarily use with my Altair Starwave 80ED. I have the SvBony 305, and their helical focuser on my SCT (SE 6) these are good products too.

Great review Ruz! Looks like a nice zoom eyepiece, not parfocal I guess based on what you said about refocusing after changing zoom. Just a quick question - does it have threads for attaching to a t-adaptor under the rubber sheath at the viewing end? The comparable celestron zoom does and it is a really useful feature to have.

I don't do a lot of visual, but as you say it is nice sometimes just to do that, or let the kids see things. I have the Baader Hyperion Zoom IV 8-24mm, with it, I can unscrew the rubber eyepiece and attach a camera as well, which allows for taking images of the same object and different zoom. It also has 1.25" and 2" noses. Almost 4x the price of the SVBony though!

I keep a celestron zoom eyepiece on my refractor. it's great for the moon. I think svbony make affordable and yet decent products so I would buy that eyepiece if I didn't have one. It's nice to have a selection of prime eyepieces but for a beginner or for occasional astronomy a zoom eyepiece is ideal as long as you don't mind refocusing a little.

If you want to picture planets with your phone zoom eyepieces are a blessing. Spot the planet at 21 mm then zoom to 7mm and 2x zoom with phone. With a Dobsonian setup that's all you need to picture planets. Best thing is you can just take out your smartphone adaptor and view the planets yourself. It never gets boring.

Glad that you admitted that they gave you this, its very obvious in your review. I don't own this and I would not get it simply because of the extremely narrow FOV of 38-56. Also your 80ED using this at 20mm (which is roughly ~42FOV) you would most certainly cutoff the edges of Andromeda, clearly not the picture you posted in the video, so I call BS on that one. I've read this has decent optics for it's price point, but I consider it way too constricting on the FOV Also how do you not know what an eye relief extension is?
@AstroFarsography
@AstroFarsography 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not really a visual user so I wasn't 100% sure whether the sliding eyecup was for eye relief extension, I thought it was but confirmed it before I committed to it. As for the field of view, that's what I remembered seeing. I don't always write the review the same day as using it so I was going from memory to a degree, and using the figures posted and that I could find in the specs of this eyepiece. Yes I've heard zoom optics usually have narrower fields of view compared to their prime counter parts which was a downside I was made aware of after the review unfortunately. Also I aim to be as transparent as possible. So if something is loaned or given, then I'm owning up to it and letting everyone know about it from the get go :)

Thanks Ruz, that's pretty cheap for a zoom considering it covers a bunch of focal lengths. As you say well worth a look if you're an imager who wants to observe occasionally. It's a shame zooms tend to have a relatively narrow apparent field of view at the wide end although the flip side is they have a relatively wide AFOV at the short end which is handy, so good for high mag work with non tracking mounts. It's something like only 40 degrees at 24mm though which is a touch narrow for me being a bit of an eyepiece snob lol. For the price it's going to be good for travel setups too!

It turns out that SvBONY produces 5 zoom eyepieces. A $150 3-8mm 6 element zoom eyepiece SV215 with a 56 degree field of view (FOV) and 10mm eye relief. A $40 7-21mm 6 element zoom eyepiece SV135 with a 57-40 degree FOV and 18-16.3mm eye relief. A $40 10-30mm 5 element zoom eyepiece SV170 with a 51-33 FOV and 17-18.5mm eye relief. A $64 8-24mm 7 element zoom eyepiece SV171 with a 56-38 degree FOV and 18-19.5mm eye relief (this is the one you tested). And a $80 7.2-21.6mm 7 element zoom eyepiece SV191 with a 65-42 degree FOV and 18-20mm eye relief (this is the one I bought). The zoom function is a little different between the last two. I notice you can change zoom by rotating the barrel. On mine (SV191) you hold the barrel and turn the eye cup all the way to one side or the other to rotate the zoom which is odd but I found that is the easiest way. You can adjust the eye cup without affecting the zoom.

I considered it. The best I could have probably done is a mobile phone image through the eyepiece and when I considered the image quality, it seemed like it wouldn't have added anything to the review - so I opted to leave it out. That is assuming you wanted to see astronomical images and not photos of birds or trees. If I review any other eyepieces in the future I'll reconsider my options on how to take a photo through the eyepiece.
