Swapping a 470HP 5.0 Coyote into My Old Mustang (Former Magazine Project Car)

3 жыл бұрын

While I was still writing for Car Craft magazine, one of my last big projects was a 1999 Mustang GT buildup. This is the story of swapping in a new 5.0 Coyote V8 into the SN95 Mustang with the help of Pro Dyno (www.pro-dyno.net) in Fort Mill, SC. Dan DeSio and Paul Connor at Pro Dyno were instrumental in helping me avoid the usual pitfalls from such a project, and I cannot recommend Pro Dyno enough. And the end result? We went from 225 horsepower at the rear wheels from the tired old 4.6 Modular to 432 and a car that's an absolute blast to drive!
Please note: I got ahead of myself a bit doing the narration and misspoke. The transmission is a T45, not a T5. And the clutch and flywheel are ACT, not ATI. Thanks!

@@TheHorsepowerMonster and thank you! It's guys like you and Richard Holdener that fueled my interest and desire to learn engines as a teenager. 25 years later I have a business tuning and diagnosing vehicles. Not to mention I also own an 18 Camaro SS sporting a Magnuson 2650 supercharger that I tuned myself. BTW, i like how you mixed in the coyote swap, you don't have to do just full engine builds to gain my view. Keep up the good work!

Current owner of this beast checking in. Picked him up about 8 months ago. Was in the market for a project and had been heavily looking for something.... Saw this pop up on FB Market place and while doing some research on the Coyote/New edge swap, found all the articles & videos on Project Fake Snake and almost couldn't believe my eyes. I couldn't get over there to give the guy my money fast enough. This thing is a total beast and I love it. It's been to a couple Autocross events, I'm booked for a track day (road course) in March, is going to be in a few shows this year, is a member of the Mustang Club of America and my local chapter and I cant take it out without getting thumbs up, compliments, and nothing but love. Freaking Awesome.

That's awesome! Thanks for the update! If you have had the car for eight months ago, did you purchase it from the father and son that lived in Georgia that bought it from me? That car was so much fun, but it was 90% complete when Car Craft went under and no other magazines were interested in it. So I figured it was time to let somebody else enjoy it and move on to another project that will take way longer than expected and cost too much (only partly joking there!). I'm really glad the Fake Snake is in good hands. If you have any pictures I'd love to see them. KZfaq doesn't allow that but if you are on Facebook maybe you can send some there to facebook.com/HorsepowerMonster ? Anyhow, thanks for the update!

👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾I been watching your channel for a while and is the 1st time I hear about your work with CarCraft. I am 36 now, but I remember like yesterday being 14-15 here in Miami, and waiting for the AutoZone to open in the morning to pick up Car Craft, Chevy Magazine and popular hot rodding, I read them all but I enjoy car craft because it was very down to earth print and not fancy. I still have articles in my closet. My wife asks me to throw it out and I just hide them somewhere else. Great days. 🤣👍🏾👋🏾

I took Car Craft for years and really miss it.......I don't know what pencil-necked geek file-13'd the magazine but he deserves as much bad luck as he can get. This swap is absolutely great and even before it started I wondered, "Why not?'. I'm subscribed and I hope that you'll bring us the good stuff the mag used to get into. I am impressed by this swap and I will bet it feels way beyond great behind the wheel. Back in the day I did a few 429/460 swaps into Mustangs and felt I'd done my time in hell but looking at the swap convinced me that there was no way I could pull this one off with ending up in a rubber room in a straight jacket. Keep the Faith, Tom

Not sure about now, but around $3K was what my brother was quoted about a year and a half ago. Then $6500 for the 2nd gen Coyote egnine. Pretty dumb spending that much when you can just do a Vortec supercharger on 4.6 or 5.0 and get even more power and torque. That's what he did, and it's faster than a stock Coyote

those are Procar by Scat Sportsman 1610. Lots of bolster. Good for short trips but a little bit much for long distance cruising. Hope that helps.

Love the videos long time subscriber. Since Car Craft was pulled are you still planning on a FI build with a 6 speed? Have you thought about reaching out to Motor Trend and become apart of their On Demand services? I have a subscription to them and while I'm not a Ford fan but they could use some Ford content.

I guess people don't buy magazines as much as they used to. Here in the UK there was a mag. called "Cars&Car Conversion or CCC for short. First published in 1964, it stopped in 2003? Times they are a changing. Not for the better 😩 but hay thanks for the interesting upload👌

What did you do for power steering?
@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 3 жыл бұрын
I used a Frontrunner kit from Vintage Air. It requires a little grinding and drilling and tapping a couple of holes to make it all work, but it is a really nice kit. The pulley kit incorporates a traditional power steering pump (I think it's Detroit Speed) that hooked right up to the power steering rack. I did have to come up with a remote resevoir for it, which is the Moroso tank bolted to the strut tower. Thanks for watching.
