In this episode of "Symposia," The European Conservative’s documentary series with Sebastian Morello, Sebastian is joined by philosopher and chairman of the Latin Mass Society, Joseph Shaw, and Charles Coulombe, American Catholic author, historian, and lecturer. Together, at one of England’s most historic pubs, the trio discuss the merits of monarchy, re-enchantment, the causes and consequences of the abuse crisis in the Church, declining birthrates, GK Chesterton, and animal-centric sentimentalism.

Been reading Coulombe’s books, have enjoyed every one. I was, prior to my recent conversion to Catholicism, a very well read Americanist Protestant. I have much to unlearn. Chesterton and Lewis healed me from modernism (and evangelicalism) Coulombe has helped me recover from Americanism.

I remember a few years ago a BBC TV producer telling me, only half jokingly that following the Brexit result people over 65 should'nt be allowed to vote and maybe by extension people who were 'too' working class as well......

Thank you for letting us come along for your conversation, it’s very important for us who value our Western/Christian tradition to get a true reckoning our current state and how we arrived there.

Joseph Shaw 17'40" - 18'20" - agree completely! Anyone who has had dealings with 'trads' brought up before the 2nd Vatican Council will notice this difference; the older ones are far less inclined to what Dr Shaw describes. It is worth remembering something Ronald Knox wrote in 'The Belief of Catholics' which was that Protestants (back then) thought of the Catholic approach to morality as lax!

I enjoyed this very much, but the beat down on Chesterton took me back. I don't go to him for philosophy or theology in any deep sense, but for his vitality!

Agreed. Very insightful conversation, but in Chesterton - whom I've only discovered a year ago - I've found a prolific anti-modernist Catholic voice that has truly helped me see the joy in Christianity. Completely unproductive to dismiss him. He is vitally needed if anything.

A most interesting conversation. As a monarchist I agree with the premise that the monarch is the ultimate check on the politician, which these days probably ensures constitutional monarchies' place as the majority governance system in the list of the most stable of the world's nations. The succinct summary of the work of Temenos, surely made graphically abundant in these days of unwisdom, confers rightful awareness of its work. And as for the location of the conversation - somewhere in or near Amersham and ideal for such talks.

I teach A Level Philosophy! It is a remarkably difficult subject to understand at that level, and I find students who can just learn set answers do quite well. I'm not sure it's impossible to teach to that age group though. For many students its the first time they've encountered anything like this and that can be very liberating for the way they think.

Try my books of satire. Every short story has a useful message. Start with Quantum Nipples, whereby a man visits a cafe inside his brain, and move on to Titanium Sushi, where galactic auditors ask the gods if they have a license to create, and move on to Selling Holes, where an Indian chief sells deep winding holes in the ground...(amazon kindle) 😊

The first step of the civilisation we havent come close to founding is as follows: 1. Free food for everyone on the planet 2. Free housing for all 3. Free medical treatment 4. Free REAL education 5. Proper care and respect for the elderly Everything else is just waffling deceit...

St. Paul says if a man will not work, neither shall he eat. God gave us a self sustaining world. It is our job to steward it. The work of the Garden of Eden preceded the Fall.
