I bought this on the steam summer sale, I´ve been playing for a couple of hours (recently arrived on the third floor) and all I can say is....this game has aged very well and is freaking amazing, even today!

I like both SHODAN's speech at the beginning, and the distress call at the end. The latter makes your imagination work, mainly due to the contrast with TriOp advertisement. Optimistic message about new, revolutionary ship - and right after, that voice in the void (no video, just sound), disrupted by static. Sends chills down the spine.

In 30 years, I never caught the announcer saying "the recently relicensed Tri-Optimum" til now. Took 40+ years for the world to get over that incident, huh?

Well for the last 30 the UNN bombed the rest of the megacorporations and their private armies into the stone age after the incident on Citadel Station. They then formed a world government with an insanely bolstered military and Navy, and passed so many technological restrictions and AI bannings that its a slog to get any scientific progress on tech done.

I love this intro because it serves two purposes. There's the standard part in that its introduction to the Von-Braun is an on-the-nose way in telling you ahead of time the stage you will be playing on. But the second purpose is the more hindsight one when you learn exactly what you were facing against, an alien species that Shodan created that had only managed to live on its own for no more then 42 years. When you get this intro telling you how next level this spacecraft is and realize this young and constantly evolving race of worms managed to slaughter its crew and take full control in short time lets you know how utterly boned humanity is if it ever gets back to Earth.

Exactly. Some say that SHODAN is not really deserving of a reputation as a dangerous villain, but those people are often the ones who haven't played the first game, and didn't get what the second game was about. SHODAN almost destroyed earth, and managed to create a species so dangerous that even she wanted them dead.

@@Certifiable Some consoling news: He's currently working on a new, unannounced game that he describes as deriving much from the principles of the immersive sim he contributed to codifying with Deus Ex in particular. This information is as recent as last month (March)

Those years.. The first one was a classic and sadly misunderstood at the time. The second one was better in so many ways, but in mid-to-late stages of gameplay, level design was so bad that it was amazing how it passed quality control. But Shodan, you can't beat her. Amazing voice and design.

thats what i was wondering the disstress call makes very little sense. since everything started happening after the von bon left earth. but honestly a bunch of stuff makes very little sense in this game when u think about it.

I think the ships’s designer knew it wasn’t ready for prime time but the company pushed the issue. This is hinted at in audio logs.

The message may have been intended for any rescue ships sent after them...or a warning should the ship return to earth.

De La Croix was likely trying to reach other survivors on the Von Braun or Rickenbacker. That the ship can't be allowed to leave Tau Ceti V's orbit, so that the unknown threat is contained there, rather than risking it spreading to Earth or other colonies.

She said "has been hijacked by an unknown force, security has been compromised", she must be broadcasting to possible nearby ships or the whole von braun in general if there is any survivor, and when she said "do not allow the ship to leave under any circumstances", she probably meant that whatever that hijacked the ship is a danger for human kind.

The mayday broadcast by the Von Braun at the end was none other than "SHODAN" using deceit to confuse Tri-optimums rescue efforts by making them believe humans still had some kind of control when in fact she had already eliminated most of them. Once she integrated into the Von Braun's mainframe she could imitate anyone's voice or identity. P.s. As a side note she meant don't let the ship leave under any circumstances, she was referring to Tau Ceti V

@@worshipvaltieldo not allow the ship to leave under any circumstances Mainly because of the two threats that are currently present and aboard inside the Von Braun (SHODAN and The Many). We know that the many wants to use the ship to get into Earth and spread their biomass while SHODAN wants to use the ship to alter the reality and even worse, use it to gain back her conquest on destroying Earth. Delacroix is broadcasting this in order to warn anyone about the current situation and that this message must be followed until everything is under control.
