After skating on & off for 25 years, I just learned You don't have to leave that wiggle room between each wheel if you use bearing spacers. They're not pointless after all lol. This is one of the best videos I've seen for cleaning bearings, rubbing alcohol is also a good solvent.
@demondevin1710

i didn’t know that i’ve always used bearing spacers and left that wiggle room i’ll try tightening it more thanks man
@mrgee918
@mrgee918 3 жыл бұрын
The spacers are only effective if they're in contact with both bearings. Then they'll all move as one unit. Have speed washers on both sides. Now you should be able to reduce the wiggle room and the bearings wheel will still spin freely.

I think it’s important to note that if you decide to use rubbing alcohol, PLEASE make sure the percentage is high. Let’s say you use 70% rubbing alcohol. Your wheels will rust from the 30% water. 91% and up is the best for cleaning bearings.

Basically get a wrench unscrew the nut take out the bearing and stuff and remember how it was placed so you can do it the exact same, then you’re going to get a piece of tissue rub the bearing on the inside and the outside and you can put in olive oil or motor oil to speed the board up and yeah you put everything back in it’s really easy and it takes about five minutes for every single bearing!

I'd recommend to not use a plastic container for your acetone. its likely to dissolve it if highly concentrated or in contact for long enough. Also, any alcohol like ethanol or methanol will probably remove oil and grease much more easily. In the lab we often use alcohol, then water, then acetone. And a little tip is that blowing on it or any other Nitrogen source will speed up the drying of the acetone. Good luck. :)

With Bones reds (what I do is....) take out the dust covers with a pin. Then use the pin to very carefully lift out the clasp holding all of the ball bearings. Push all of the ball bearings together in one spot and they, and the centre, will dop out . Now all parts can be cleaned more effectively. To put them back together again reverse the process. Put all ball bearings together at the bottom of the outer ring, sit the centre on the top and push the balls apart to lock in place. Space them out to match the clasp and click back in......job done 😊

if there's one thing i've learned from working in maintenance, it's that cleaning a bearing doesnt fix the damage already done to the bearing. I personaly perfer to just swap my bearings out since they arent all that expensive anyways. if you'd really want to clean the bearings you would have to clean them a multiple times to get rid of most filth which to me doesnt seem time efficient. also, if im going to spend money on cleaning utencils i might aswell get new bearings :^)

If the bearings have metal guards do you need to leave them to dry longer to make sure all the solvent got out? And can you use any solvent on the bearings, or will some solvents damage them?
@tacticsboardshop
@tacticsboardshop 2 жыл бұрын
You'll be alright with any kind of solvent like isopropyl rubbing alcohol, acetone, lacquer thinner, carburetor cleaner, etc. They wont damage the steel bearings or races. But don't use any chlorides or highly corrosive acids like hydrochloric or sulfuric acids. As far as letting the metal shield type bearing dry longer, I'm not really sure. Most solvents evaporate on their own relatively quickly, so it probably wouldn't take much longer. I hope that helps! - Tim

I'm curious why you load the bearings into the container with the exposed side facing up. Wouldn't you want that side facing down so it's easier for the solvents to flush out while shaking (the same way you smack them onto the paper towel afterwards)?

My kids just got some $40-$60 skateboards off amazon. Good reviews. I went to spin the wheels after opening and they only spin for a second or two! They can't be dirty yet. Any advice? Do you think the axel nut is just too tight or do I need to add lubrication?

Well, it's either the axle nuts are too tight, or the bearings are just garbage. The bearings that come stock in most department store completes (I know you got it from Amazon, but the same thing applies) are absolutely terrible. Did it say what kind of bearings it came with? Try loosening the axle nut just a smidge, and if that doesn't work, then just replace the bearings with some cheap but still good bearings like Bones Reds or Bronson G2s. 👍 Cheers! - Tim

@@tacticsboardshop Thanks for the response. Here is the link to one of the boards: smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01L6GAKQ0/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_3?smid=A3JHC5JKLEVOCB&th=1 It says "7 layer maple. 31*8 inches. 54*37mm Wheels ABEC-9 bearings. I loosened the wheel nuts a bit on all 3 of our kids' skateboards bc one of them came with a tool to do that. It appears that did help...but only a bit. They now spin a couple seconds longer. I could not loosen one of the wheels on this board for some reason...maybe the nut was a bit too small for tool and it was too big for all the options on my ratchet set. Weird. Also, I found some spare bearings that came with another board. I tried spinning them in my hand and they did not spin long at all. Is that typical when ur just spinning the bare bearing? Maybe that's evidence of low quality. Interestingly, after loosening the wheel nuts, the boards seems to lean left and right better to get sharper turns. Maybe I just didn't realize before. Finally, do I need to worry about the loosened nuts coming off and the wheels falling off? P.S. Is there a better beginner priced skateboard you can recommend? Thanks!

@@dsha2006 Well, usually prebuilt completes from reputable brands are around $90 - 100. It's totally fine though to start out on a cheapo board just to find out if they like it or not. I've gotten my nieces and nephews nice skate completes just to have them decide skateboarding isn't their thing after one or two sessions. 😄 Since you already have the amazon completes, you might as well just replace the bearings and use them until one of kiddos decides they want to take skating little more seriously. Loosening the axle nuts shouldn't effect the turning radius, so it probably was already like that. And as for the wheels falling off, there should be a locknut on the axles, so you shouldn't have any problems with it falling off. I hope that helps! Happy New Year! - Tim

hey. many thanks for the cool video, but just one question. What to do if the bearing is so rusted that it can't be removed from the axle? In my case, the inner bearing got rusted so badly.
@tacticsboardshop
@tacticsboardshop 2 жыл бұрын
You'll probably have to use some chemicals like CLR or some kind of rust dissolver to loosen it up so you can remove the bearing. It might work too to try and smack it off with a hammer. 🤷‍♂️ I mean, it's worth a try! I hope you're able to get the bearing off! 🙏👍 - Tim

Yeah I used a rubberized hammer and soaked the bearings in WD-40. Just get a paper towel and wrap it around the axle below the bearing to protect it from dripping. Soak it a few times and hammer them out gently. GL HF

How long should I be swishing bearings around in the container of cleaning solvent and should I let them soak for a couple of minutes?
@tacticsboardshop
@tacticsboardshop 4 жыл бұрын
You don't need to swish them for very long. On the Bones Cleaning kit it says to swish them for about 20 seconds but I always did it for a minute or two to really let the cleaner get in there and rinse out all the gunk. Cheers! - Tim

I might, as long as it's thin and not thick and goopy it should work fine. If you give it a try, let us know how it works! Cheers! - Tim

About a year ago I tried cleaning my bearings for the first time. But for some reason all of the ball bearings just fell out the bearings it self. Was there a reason for that?
@tacticsboardshop
@tacticsboardshop 3 жыл бұрын
If the balls just fell out, then that bearing was already broken. If the internal cage breaks, then there's nothing holding the ball bearings in place, and when you take the bearing out it just falls apart. So you didn't do anything wrong, sometimes you can be skating a busted bearing and not even realize it. Cheers! - Tim

You can remove pressed in dirt shields but only by destroying them. Then just replace with a removable shield. Also shouldn't you grease instead of lube? Or maybe both? I wonder what the difference is between lubed and greased bearings.
@mauritsvw
@mauritsvw Жыл бұрын
Valid question. All kinds of new bearings I've come across have always been greased at the factory, not lubed/oiled. Came across this from JE Bearings: For most linear guide and drive applications, grease is the better lubrication option. It adheres to bearing surfaces better than oil, lasts longer, and is less likely to run off or be ejected from rotating parts.

Pressed in metal shields can be taken off too although more tedious, u can clean the bearings and use them without shields just fine. I skate like 2$ aliexpress bearings like this just fine
