This week on the GCN Show, as the Tour de France action is heating up we take a look at whether it might be possible for any cyclist to get good enough to ride the Tour just by training hard. They say hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard, but is there any truth to that? This week, Si and Dan mull it over.

Of course pro athletes put in tremendous amount of work and have great discipline and work ethic, but without their genetics and natural talent they wouldn't be there.

I once coached a guy who had the DNA but his parents didn't support him training hard so he quit while lesses athletes I coached went on to become Olympians. So it not just talent and training, it's also the environment.

OMG can't believe I just heard my name on the show thanks guys! CHEERS! Don't worry my development only got improved by encouraging me to cycle and stay active, watching you guys only helped to grow my love for cycling and I still do it every single day I can... Over the past years I've definitely grown as a person and cyclist and no matter where I find myself in life I'm glad I can always count on you guys to consistently put out great videos. I'm extremely lucky to have grown alongside the channel and you guys and to have been along for the journey which hopefully is just getting started. So many good memories have been made watching you guys. Sometimes I can still faintly hear the sound of Matt not clipping in first time, Dan missing the bean bag (or having too many mineral waters) and Si cleaning his bike and using WD40 (I've done it too...maybe the only bad thing you've taught me). But obviously can't forget all of the amazing presenters... Manon, Hank, Ollie, Emma, Conor, Tom, Chris and Jeremy. Love all you guys keep up the amazing work it affects people's lives more than you can imagine.

I discovered GCN at the beginning of 2019 when I was in the process of choosing a gravel bike. Since then I've been watching all 400 GCN shows one by one and today I finally caught up. It's been a great and incredibly funny ride! Also I have to say that while I still love taking my gravel bike into quiet forest roads I recently bought a proper road bike and I'm riding that much more than any other bike I own. This is definitely at least partly thanks to the GCN channel which keeps inspiring me. Thank you guys!

The general discussion from about 6:00 minutes to 9:13 was some of the best you guys have ever done. Very enjoyable to hear the insights from experience. But remember, guys - you both made it to the professional levels of team cycling, and that's not to be disregarded. Most of us still look up to the GCN presenters.

I've only embarked on my cycling journey last year but, thanks to your help and advice, I'm now the owner of a decent road bike with an indoor smart training set up. I'm also training for my first century ride which I'm hoping to do on the 22nd of this month, spurred on by doing it for Cancer Research. Today at the TdF (Stage 10) at the second crash of the day, about 10 riders went down and most of them were waiting for there team cars to show up and the Mavic neutral support car just goes by and doesn't stop. It they don't give out the bikes after crash, what are they for? Is the Mavic neutral support car just a rolling commercial or does anyone every use one after a crash?

Great discussion. As a former licensed rider I will like to add mental toughness in addition to genetics and training. Maybe this is the most important skill to become a pro. I remember Mads Pedersen, the current world champion. During his young years on the TTs he would push him self so much that he actually threw up after the finish line. He recovered rather quickly and by the end of the day he was usually still no. 1.

I had it with swimming. I improved massively from the ages of 11-14 and then after that I only made marginal gains. I was always the one trying hardest in every session and couldn’t really have put anything more into it and yet others who barely tried were still faster than me. Once you get to a certain level almost everyone is trying just as hard so it’s pretty much just natural ability that decides who’s best.

a TON of professional athletes were born just after the age cutoffs for youth sports, because they stand out amongst the rest of their peers due to being older and having developed more, and are therefore awarded better opportunities and training thanks to being perceived as a better athlete, even though they could be even below average compared to where their peers will be at their age. slightly harder to translate to cycling, but it's certainly worth a look given its prevalence in other sports. edit: there's also probably the inverse effect, in that seeing someone beat you constantly due to being older could deter you from playing, since your training will probably only put you up to where they naturally are due to the age advantage. here's an interesting collection of this data from the USA's college sports regulatory organization www.ncaa.org/about/resources/research/birthday-effect-college-athletics

I'd also be interested to know what difference getting into cycling at a young age makes. I was relatively active as a kid, but spent 7 years being sedentary before taking up cycling at 21. Figured I had average genetics, got to 270w FTP (4W/kg) quite quickly, in about 6 months, but proceeded to sit around there for 2.5 years on 8-10hrs a week training. Figured I wasn't going to get much further (peaked briefly at 280w in early 2019), perhaps a few more watts with very disciplined training and increased volume. However, to my surprise, since lockdown (past 5 months) I've gained 40w (310w FTP @ 4.7W/kg - confirmed with hour test) which has blown me away. Interestingly, my volume has actually gone down to an average of 6-8hrs a week but is far more consistent, hard and balanced. I've now re-evaluated my potential, it feels great going from feeling stuck, to actually feeling like I could push even further. My best 20 minute power was 330w, and based on how I felt from that effort, while I was dead at the end of it then, given I only cracked 20 minutes @ 300w for the first time in March, it feels like my hour power could be brought up to that and hopefully beyond :) Obviously still leagues away from the top guys, but I think a lot of people blame their potential on genetics, but I now see there's a lot to be said about training smarter. I would say that it certainly takes good genetics, but training should get you decently far. Age is another interesting equation, as by the time pro's reach my age of 24, they may already have 10 years of training in the legs, which will likely give them an incredible base, meaning that when resting and during off-seasons, they lose proportionally less fitness and thus can push higher after.
@chrisgilligan4968
@chrisgilligan4968 3 жыл бұрын
Stay with it if you feel like you have some potential. You are still very young. Some of the physiological changes do take a number of years of consistent training to develop. If you carry on pushing yourself you will probably hit your genetic peak around year 7-8 of consistent training. I was a distance runner in my early masters years. I had run a little in high school, but not much after that until 21. I trained specifically for the marathon and found that there were a few proper leaps in development. The first one happened quickly like yours. The second on was probably around the 5 year mark and the last one was around the 7 year mark. After that there were still some gains to be had...but in much smaller increments and requiring a great deal more training and effort to achieve. My best times were in my mid-30's.

Agreed, some fitness adaptations take some time to happen, and enough rest also plays a great part in it. I came from a very unhealthy overweighted background before I started serious cycling, though I was relatively fit at high school and college playing basketball, but the office job and bad diet had destroyed everything... The “base” build for me is not very easy, and it’s not quick. For a long time I just couldn’t hold 30kph for a few minutes. But one day, it suddenly feels I can hold that for some time. And then the gains become quick, it feels like a barrier has been broken, everything becomes quicker and more noticeable... I now can average at 270 real watts at a local climb for 42 minutes, however it would take 1 hour a year ago. The physiology is a strange thing, it’s non linear and happens differently across people. Also note for us not “well-trained” cyclist, the strength of cardio-vascular part and muscular part is not always synced with each other, one may limit the other, you have to work both. Before I always hit max HR (near 200) easily and hold there for a long time, but legs are not exhausted, but now it’s the opposite, it’s hard to hit the higher end HR but the leg muscle becomes the limit, it always get tired before cardio. You have to dig into it and train smart, for us common “not well trained” folks there’s always some room to get there.

I feel like starting age is super important. I know too many good cyclists who were just hopeless at other sports.

Thanks for this solid and near philosophical dissection of the question. It’s not exactly a conclusion you find at the end of a Disney film is it?
