Several different rhythms going on there. Really cool. 😎 The guitarist, Adrian Belew, is using feedback from the amplifier, to make those sounds. The band has four members. They added extra musicians for their touring band.

The guitarist doing the distortion at the beginning was Adrian Belew who was a member of the 1970s prog rock group King Crimson.

Yes this was their 1980 tour at the time of their revolutionary smash Remain in Light. Their next tour ~1983 included Speaking in Tongues and was filmed for Stop Making Sense.

Appears on you tube i believe, as a grainy live performance. Frikkin superbly layered song. Love the bass pieces, the tink tonk of the percussion oh....of course the wackiness of the lead singer byrne.

Great band, this isn't a track I'd choose to ease folks into them though, not their most accessible for sure. This is a good live version though, lots of energy and funk. The lead guitarist at the beginning was using feedback to create those sounds, by moving his guitar real close to his guitar amp speakers he creates a controlled sound loop of distortion and sustained sound, improvising and reacting to what he hears back. As you said every band in this era had their own thing, they may have had their imitators sure, but no one was really like Talking Heads. Their front man, David Byrne, made an asset out of his quirkiness, and a lot of his inspiration and lyrics are pretty out there, don't try to figure them out just go with the groove. Check out any song from their live show 'Stop making sense' .

psycho killer,stay up late,take me to the river,this must be the place, girlfriend is better...would all be better first songs to listen to by talking heads.good luck
