After nearly a year of languishing in the on-deck circle, the Tamiya P-38F finally makes its way to the bench. In this first installment, the focus is on getting the cockpit painted and chipped before moving on to detailing, decals, and weathering in Part 2.

Just when I've convinced myself I really don't need the Tamiya P-38 yet, Doog drops the series. Thanks Fucker lol

Started model building in the 70s Monogram & then Tamiya made me a builder for life... Blame them!🤗

What I am continually reinforced watching your videos is the necessity of a deft, light hand at applying paint. Reintroducing myself to the hobby, I am reminded that I carry unrefined techniques from previous modeling eras, like slathering unthinned paint on a model. Thanks, Matt.

Yep! Go as light as you can get away with. You can always add more paint. But removing too much is a tedious task.

Solo glad your doing this kit, mine arrives today, and also your attitude seems back on track, especially after the trumpeter cockpit where you seemed to be frustrated as hell.

Niece work on the pit. Was hoping and anticipating you using the Quantos set after watching the 32nd project with the Red Fox set. I have the Quantos set, and looking forward to seeing how you approach other sections of the Tamiya kit.

Try getting Mr Hobby Weathering Brushes. They have short stiff bristles which are prefect for controlling chipping when you use the hairspray technique. Extra small set is MB35:600 which has two brushes: soft and hard. Other set is MB30:700 Hard large and small brushes. Great work on the cockpit! Will you still be riveting the wing around the cockpit pod?

I'm a sucker for more tools and brushes, so thanks! And yes, I've got HGW's rivet set and am planning on at the very least using them on either side of the cockpit.

@@DoogsModels Love HGW's stuff. Rivets should really help add interesting realistic texture. I got my brushes from Hobby Link Japan pre-pandemic . . . Domestically Burbank House of Hobbies carries them. Great shop for pros. They're near Disney, Warner Brothers and Universal Studios and they get a lot of business from the practical SFX guys. Gotta have tools to weather the Razor Crest! You can call Burbank House of Hobbies if you need to special order them. Shipping for brushes should be $4.00 + tax. The MB30 is out of stock right now. When you did the chipping, you used hairspray then several color coats. Dan you please tell me what you used to get the paint to chip? Was it plain water? Thank you.

When, oh when, is someone going to do an aftermarket decal sheet for the Tamiya P-38H? The limited edition kit only has one marking option.

What kind of brush do you use for the chipping through the hair spray? I thought maybe you were using a stencil brush but after looking again just looks like it's just an old worn out brush?
