I headed off into a Northumberland Forest for a much needed chilled camp,
My Exped mat failed and I also ended up soaked through and having to don Gortex rain gear to get through the night in my sodden sleeping bag.
In the video I said, I have had not mat problems, I meant total failure, I have had 2 previous Exped fails, one a synmat 7 which had Chambers fail and my last fail was a ultra 3r witch developed a leak, all replaced under warranty but the warranty is now out on this one, but given the serious failure I will contact them, update to follow.

I also enjoy the videos without music, keep them the way they are. I had the same damp experience as you under a tarp, I then used a tent and it was fine. It was 9 degrees C and 98% humidity that night, plus the grass was wet with dew before I went to bed.

@@northumberlandmountainhopper I didn’t want to say but I also had a slow puncture in my new inflatable mat . Sleeping bag was soaked through like yours, I exchanged the air mat for a new one ,and the last camp in a tent was fine. Min temp at night was 16 degrees C. Just brought a ready to heat meal from the Steak Detective for just over £5. !!!! Cannot wait to try it out. Steak, carrots, and dumplings.

Nothing wrong with your content. I’ve found when it’s really damp I get less problems when I cover as much ground as possible with membrane. Polycro etc. It prevents moisture from ground condensing in your space. You usually only have to contend with the moisture in the air. You can handle that with the configuration of your tarp. Not my idea. Seen it many times watching tarp campers in the USA. And there years ahead of us using tarps and hammocks.

Wow midges! I borrowed a couple of foam sleeping mats, bought a bivy and sleeping bag off Amazon, though I may have over egged the pudding some what as it claims to have a comfort rating of -10% to 10%c for the sleeping bag. The sleeping bag looks fantastic now but let's see what a few nights out does to it! I would have liked the British army Goretex but my budget was £50, so in June 2024, I got a Mountain Warehouse bivvy and a Trail 3 season sleeping bag for under £50, and in the middle of the night I ordered a 3x3 tarp to be delivered today! I love your videos, they have the information I truly need presented in a way I can enjoy and understand. Great stuff!

Bloody hell Adrian that was a mare , that foil mat must have been holding the condensation and the bag lying on it was making it a perfect storm . And the bivi bag has just been sweating away. I had similar weather conditions last week but thankfully only a slight bit of damp at the foot box of the bag. And no heat lost as it was a synthetic bag. Cooler weather and wind for these camps to stay condensation free. Unlucky with the mat , it’s just one of those things so wouldn’t dwell on it too much . Well done on surviving the night 👍

Hi Adrian, what a nightmare that was. I really don’t rate the exped mats, I’ve had two fail on me now. I always carry a puncture repair kit, obviously yours was beyond repair. Good point made regarding extra kit, that did get you through. The only back up mat I’d carry is the foam mat. I’ve never seen condensation like that tbh, maybe that mesh net didn’t help? But with zero wind etc, that certainly didn’t help. A good educational vid this, it goes to show what disasters can happen, but you were more or less prepared. Please don’t change your style of vids, this channel is one of my favourites lol. Garden project looks fantastic btw. Atb mate, Dave.

Hi Dave, thanks for watching, you would have thought the foam mat would have worked, perhaps in a tent it would have, it’s an odd environment under a tarp sometimes, time to bring out the army bag now the damp is back, my coat around my lower legs was what saved the camp, if you go for a bivy remember only gortex works in most weathers if not all, did you ever see my other failed bivy camp, that was wet in the bag, Cheers Adrian

Forget anyone complaining about your videos, Adrian. Your channels growing quickly, and nearly everyone enjoys what you make, so that's more than enough proof that what you're doing works. That sunset was phenomenal ❤ Proper stunning stuff. TrustFire make great torches to be fair to them, I love my one. We've all been there with air mats, sorry yours broke, could easily have been a small stick on the floor that prodded it but that's one big tear. Jeez that was a lot of condensation, sure you didn't piss yourself 😂, sorry I couldn't help myself. I have to admit I don't use that specific bivvy in autumn as its not the warmest or thickest material, I feel the army issue ones would not have absorbed the water through and are simply more superior as a bag. At least you managed to survive the night and adapt, it's what it's all about sometimes. I noticed someone say in the comments that a wet sleeping bag should still keep you warm... nope! It'll give you hypothermia 😂 Very enjoyable video mate. And a great build at the end 👍👌👊

@boyzinthewood1
@boyzinthewood1 9 ай бұрын
@northumberlandmountainhopper there's not much you can do about mats tbh. I had 4 fail me in one year not so long ago (all different makes and price ranges). For any real comfort, you need air mats, so it's always a compromise. The sponge ones are useless for comfort, but dont pop. You can however use them with a cot for a guaranteed puncture proof night, but then your pack weight goes up however you dont need a chair if you utilise the cot (i have the Naturehike cot and love it). Cots are great, but they have no thermal properties at all. But a foam mat on a cot works well. Although in peak winter it probably wouldn't be good enough.

Well that was interesting…At your expense! An air mat is a weak link for sure if it busts but you would have been ok if it had been only that. I don’t think that was the only factor creating the huge condensation. The so-so breathability of the Hunka + high humidity area+ clear skies+heat loss because the mat failed…Maybe even the shiny surface of the foam mat? Always enjoy the videos Adrian. Hi there... I will echo the comments made about your videos. Nothing wrong with what you are doing, if someone doesn't like it then they can simply move on.... their loss... The Alpkit Hunnka bivy bag isn't obviously breathable enough to prevent excessive water vapour building up. The temperature must be dropping lower than the dew point for that amount of build up, leading to condensation inside the bag. Perhaps use a hand warmer sachet at the foot end to raise the temperature of the material? Might work. Also, mabey keep the foot end under the tarp, the warmer micro climate might be warm enough. The British army bag is far more breathable, I love mine. Ah, the fun of bivy bag camping!
