It’s especially frustrating because Taylor’s at a stage in her career where she no longer needs hits, so she should be making the most interesting music of her career. But ever since Folklore and Evermore she’s become stagnant to the point of parody. Her songwriting on TTPD and even Midnights wasn’t as strong as previous records. Meanwhile her colleagues are all making objectively better music than she is and yet I’m supposed to accept that their songs and albums aren’t as worthy of that number one spot as Taylor? Be serious.

I agree with this, mainly, but do you think it's at all possible Taylor just told her merch/distribution team to go all out with the variants in order to keep her at the top of the charts? In a way, that would put her at fault too, but I doubt she's making every single one of these calculated sales decisions herself when she's in the middle of a world tour right now. Meaning, she's probably not trying to target artists like Billie and Charli personally, but her 'blocking' them on the charts is an unfortunate byproduct of Taylor and her team wanting to keep her album at #1 as long as possible.

There should be controls on releasing multiple variants of the same album. Some ways I can think of, there are probably better ways - any album containing a track from a previous studio release in the last year or two should be disqualified from charting - the original version album should be disqualified if another version of the album is being promoted. - each version of an album should be treated as a separate album or only the best selling version of the album count - a figure worth an old track’s contribution to an album should be penalized. For example a 16 track album containing 3 new tracks would only be worth 3/16s of sales - not allowing music stores or streaming services to market/sell more than one version of any album

Bit late to this. But I do live in England and Swift is touring here at the moment as she has been doing for the past couple of weeks in the UK. I would think the UK version of her album was dropped to coincide with the tour rather than be 'petty' to Charli.

As in, as an artist, if you want to compete with other artists, you put out good music that people want to listen to. And if you put out good music, then let the charts reflect that. Of course, I am aware that at the end of the day, the music industry is still a business. Artists and their labels will ultimately want to sell their records. With Taylor’s manner of releases for TTPD, it is undeniably evident that she wants to stay on that #1 spot. Is there a problem with wanting to stay on that spot? Is there a problem with wanting to sell as much records as you want? Absolutely not! People have said it here. It’s not “unfair,” nor is it “cheating,” because she is playing by the rules. But does it frustrate me that TTPD is back at the #1 spot because she released a new variant with an exclusive track available only until midnight, a month after initial release and not because it reflects the general public’s affinity to the music? Yes. TTPD now joins Whitney Houston’s “Whitney” as the only female albums in history to spend their first 8 weeks of release at #1. Do I think they’re the same? Absolutely not! (I actually felt so stupid typing ‘How many versions of the Whitney album are there?’ just to make sure it didn’t achieve the feat the same way Taylor did). Does it worry me that Taylor’s version of exclusivity marketing takes away something organic about music? Absolutely. There is no denying that Taylor Swift is “just competitive”. She really has changed the game with this one. But it’s sad that this is how she sees this all - a competition. She really does put the word “industry” in the “music industry.”

But now at least I learned that from here on forward, just because it stayed on the charts, doesn’t mean more and more different people heard how good the album was and decided to buy it (which is traditionally what would indicate what the general public decides is a good album). It can also most definitely mean that the same people are buying the same album in different versions.

This trend reminds me a lot of what happened with CD singles where you’d release 5 different versions of the same song with slightly altered track lists to try and boost their position in the charts through collectible appeal (Björk circa Post is a great example of this). If you want *everything*, even if it’s not that great, you have to buy another unit.

i know swifties who HATE this album, while personally feel like the writings and the metaphors on it are fantastic. the base version is better than the anthology because of some things, but the title track needs work and there is cringe that goes along with it. i’m a critique and i haven’t full dived in to this album yet because it’s still new, but i really enjoyed it and like most of the songs! i’m not brain dead though, have your own opinion. Tell me why i’m wrong, i could not care less.

Funny thing is as a Swiftie, I think there’s a huge sect of Swifties that understand that Taylor is petty and cut throat in this industry. One of her nicknames is literally Capitalism Barbie. That said it’s important to mention that Taylor has been on a UK stretch of her tour for the past 2 weeks so it makes sense that she would release something exclusive there. So it may or may not be a coincidence. Also I think most Swifties would agree that the first half of the new album has some of her most mid songs but that the second half is some of her best music to date. At the end of the day it all has the same journal entry emotion that Swifties come back for and that ultimately is the important thing that puts an album on top. Love the new Charlie XCX album tho.
