Like with many things on the show, there are a lot of exaggerations and misinformation. Like Daniel telling his family that as a kid, Cobra Kai pushed him off a cliff on his bike, when in reality Daniel was exaggerating because it was only a hill. Or, like how Daniel told Mr. Miyagi that Ali crashed his car, when in fact Ali warned him that the brakes were going out. Or, like how Johnny told Miguel about Daniel stealing his girlfriend but embellished/distorted the truth.

In Season 4 there are a lot of Easter egg references to Ralph Macchio movies. The drive-in scene and the later switch-blade reference are nods to the 1983 film The Outsiders that Macchio appeared in. Macchio's character gets into a gang fight and kills another teen with a switch-blade.

The great thing about this show is how shades of grey the characters are. At many points in episode 4 I was thinking "why am I rooting for Cobra Kai to kick their asses". Kenny right now is innocent and is not caught up in the karate war, so Miyagi-Fang just sees him as a Cobra Kai douche and bullies him.

Even Terry Silver as he was living a better life after Part III and seems to want to help his students and keep Kreese in check like reminding him why he is still doing somethings when they didn't work last time and he will get the same result if he does it the same way again.

Yup. That's what I like about Kenny's character path. He doesn't get the clichéd corruption arc. He's still a sweet kid that would rather be left alone, but reserves all his rage for the punk that tormented him. His threat at the end was a bit much, but I'd argue Kenny is way higher on the karma ladder than Anthony. Why? Because I'm not convinced that Anthony has learned anything. Danny yelling at him was a good start, but that just had him saying what he figured they wanted to hear. That apology to Kenny was some of the fakest crap I've ever heard. He wasn't apologizing. He was just trying to say the right thing to dig himself out of the hole he put himself in.

The thing about Sam is, at this point in the story, she's broken. She's scared shitless of Tory and has PTSD from the school fight, and at home she doesn't feel her parents understand the extent to which she's broken. At the same time, she can't look weak, Tory smells it. This makes her overcompensate so she can feel, just for a little bit, like she's in control of the situation (that's what that fight in the fair when Hawk broke Dimitri's arm was all about), but she is not equipped to deal with such stress - she was just a popular spoiled rich girl in high school living her best life, less than a year ago). Because of this, she comes across as arrogant and belligerent. Many don't like Sam's character, but if we understand these nuances, we see how Mary Mouser is doing a terrific work lending this kind of credibility to the character, one you feel sorry for in one episode only to despise her actions right in the next one. I do urge you to watch carefully Sam's facial expressions throughout the show, especially in key moments - you'll know which ones when they show up. Mary does a fantastic job communicating with her facial expressions what the character feels, even if no words are said. Sam still needs to face her fears. She needs to trust herself (which she doesn't even if she tries to hide it), and also needs a reality check, because Tory, as psychopath as she was just a few episodes ago, also has problems and is also dealing with a lot of heavy stuff.

I agree. Plus Sam is a kid so she does not think things through like an adult. It is easy for someone watching to come down on Sam but we are not the ones that Tory cut with a knife or had our homes broken into.

@3:17-@3:42 this may seem like a simple dinner, but Miguel is putting in the effort to impress Sam's family for the long run. He's also grateful for being invited to a nice dinner, and he doesn't disrespect like Kyler would. Going to Stanford isn't just talk, and he may have a good chance at getting in since he comes from a low-to-middle income household and gets good grades in school. Contrary to Johnny's beliefs, Miguel knows what he's doing. @19:34 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Not to mention that Miguel is really learning a lot from Daniel. Not just Miyagi-Do, but also potential career choices and words of advice that will help build his moral character.

Same thing with Johnny and Sam bonding when he’s teaching her, cause Sam is more like Johnny, and Johnny understands her life perfectly well than Daniel. @gigo518
@gigo518 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great point. Once again, Johnny is only considering his own feelings. I just finished writing a comment where I said Johnny is not ready to be a father figure to Miguel until he matures and starts behaving and thinking like an adult, and that includes thinking of other's feelings before your own and trying to understand others feelings. He doesn't even try to understand why Miguel wants to have a good relationship with Daniel. And even if it wasn't about Sam, Johnny should respect Miguel enough to let him be close to Daniel for whatever reason he wants. In future episodes we're going to see a similar situation with Daniel not feeling the idea of Sam spending time with Johnny. But his feelings come more from a place of concern about what she's learning (here we have to remember that Daniel is all too familiar with how the aggressive teachings of Cobra Kai can corrupt if not taught carefully) rather than about jealousy.

Sooo... Why was Johnny jealous? Well let's see, Sam has Danny in her life, so Johnny will only ever be his sensei, not her father. Miguel is like a surrogate son, but he doesn't have the security of Miguel being his bio kid. Also Daniel obviously thinks he can be a better role model and father figure. Also, Danny played father figure and sensei to Johnny's ACTUAL bio kid

Guys Sam told Johnny exactly what he needed to hear. He was acting dangerous and Sam was protecting her group but in the end Johnny got to her and she listened to him and they were both successful in the end. Also Tory broke into her house and tried to injure her twice with weapons. Whatever stupid mind tricks she's did to Tory at her job is nothing compared to Tory seriously trying to injure her.

Also Johnny calling out Sam was kinda ridiculous considering that Sam was not driving the car that ran into him but yet he still places the blame on her. It's like he only sees things the way he wants to not the way they actually happened.

I want to point out what u said about cobra kai beating them. Ima side with my boy miguel on this one. Miguel was right him and sam would have defintely whooped robby and torrys gang. Miguel won the tournament beating robby and miguel had robby pinned at the school fight. It would have been great to see them fight. But clearly miguel being the adult in the room was smart enough to avoid the fight just like how mr. Myagi says the best defense is "no be there"

What was sad is when Kenny showed up to the dojo Kreese just expected him to fight right away without even teaching him any basics like Daniel would have done.

21:40 Good point, I'd rather have revenge driven hothead bad guys. Adding someone calm and calculating, even more than Kreese, is a definite negative development for our protagonists. Chaotic evil is far easier to deal with than neutral, focused evil.

I feel like you guys in that Terry Silver is teaching good lessons so far, is trying to be the voice of reason to Kreese, and is trying to get the best out of the kids, but we know what he could be capable of if one wrong thing happens. Thomas Ian Griffith has been great so far. People liked his performance in The Karate Kid Part III, but we knew it was in an over the top way. On Cobra Kai, he is being a great actor in a serious performance. No one else could be Terry Silver.

@@bobroma other than the alcoholism I know a lot of people that are a lot like Johnny. There are more people than you know that have no idea that Facebook, KZfaq, Twitter etc are a thing. These people are just busy living their lives in the real world and not glued to a device. They are working jobs, raising families, and just busy with things that matter. Kreese is completely relatable as a character and is going to have the greatest redemption ark

Love watchng your reactions but damn there are so many subtle 80's references that seem to slip right by you - not your fault of course but they are definitely part of the charm of the show. 21:49 the drive in switch blade fight is a nod to The Outsiders, the 1983 Coppola movie about teenage gangs in the 50's where there is a scene at a drive in that involves a switchblade - I wish I could point out all the 80's refs that you miss
