Жыл бұрын

It's 1985 and I'm riding my Schwinn bike down to the Leisure World to grab the latest copy of White Dwarf Magazine. Obsessed with models, I fully overlooked Battletech with its Cardboard standees at the time. Almost forty years later and finding the original rules at a Flea Market, here I am giving the classic 1st (2nd) edition boxed set a try.
MASSIVE thanks to Austin Cole and his insane bitz box for helping find period Ral Partha minis and the UNSEEN Falcon Mech from 1985!

Been gathering up my old stuff lately, had a Battledroids box set but only have the rules and maps left (may have the plastic models they gave you somewhere). Dug out my Ral Parth minis and realized I have over 80 including vehicles, infantry, and aerospace fighters. Just picked up the new boxed set and am organizing all my printed material. Been enjoying these replays almost as the BFD ones. After a 30 year break am looking for a group again. Not so easy for a senior these days.

When I played back in the day I wrote stuff down on the mech sheet- hex number, movement type, and facing. That way when I messed up, like you did around 17:40, I could look at my sheet and reset myself. But really, the hex numbering system is a left over from the old counter and hex wargames that were the hobby in the US from like the 60's to the 80's. Miniature gaming wasn't a thing in the US just yet. Most players played table top wargames or RPGs. Miniatures, even in D&D, were just super rare for most players, so hexes and counters it was.

@19:17- His mech used movement points, so he counts as walking. You can only get stationary if you don't spend movement points.

I've actually played BattleTech by email back in University. I had printed a huge paper map that I had put of my room's wall. I'd pin paper tokens on it while keeping track of movement via an Excel spreadsheet. Took us about a year to complete a Company vs Company game. Fun times! :)

Ah, dice on the table for movement modifiers...just like we used to do it. White for walk/run, red if jumping and if you didn't have a modifier you got a d4 (we had a bunch of transparent ones that were hard to read so they worked well as a marker). Also putting the mech sheets in a clear plastic protector and using a grease pencil to mark the damage makes things easier.

I started in 85 . game wasn't even on the shelf yet :) I picked up everything from that point on. That back shot was actually defender choice as it came in on a hex line. Heat levels affect the walking speed of a mech. so if your at minus 2 to speed your new speed is 4/6 and jumping speed is not affected by heat.

So I have this 2nd edition set as well as a mint Battledroids set with the unbuilt models. I have to be honest I prefer the Battledroids set since it included rules for infantry, jeeps, and some armored vehicles and just feels like a more complete battle experience. If there is anything Battletech is actually missing is strategy given the low number of units you play with.

So many great Battletech memories from Saturday afternoons of yore. I stopped playing for about 10 years but the recent new releases kicked off the BT bug again and now I'm playing in a campaign on the weekends. It's great that the game has remained mostly unchanged and the changes that have occurred are for the better (cleaned up and clarified rules for the most part). Thanks for posting these throwback videos as they are a blast to watch and just reminisce.

@@GuerrillaMiniatureGames To be fair I was like ten, but I thought maybe they were supposed to sort of booklet your mech sheets together or something...? I had of course totally forgotten about them, but had a very strong sense memory when you pulled them out. I think they sort of floated around in my stuff for years, never finding their purpose. ...Probably a metaphor in there somewhere.

The hex numbers let us record the mechs' positions when Mom made us pick the game up off the kitchen table. "Ah, dinner time. Already? That sucks." I cut my teeth on Battletech in the eighth grade, 37 years ago. Then we advanced to Steve Jackson's pocket games (e.g., Battlesuit and Car Wars.) Then after that in the ninth grade: Starfleet Battles. We played at a different pace back then. We had a lot more free time. It was really fun (and often really methodical).

It is cool how little the game has changed. We had all that stuff as kids but has been lost to the sands of time ( or sold off by my brother in the early 00s because he did not have room for it in his apartment). I think one of the changes you see moving from 3025 through the lost tech is more deadly combats with more weapons, heat sinks, but still the same max armor and easier to critical xl engines.

At 24:00 could the Griffon not torso twist to the right, and the use the PPC because it was on his arm to still shoot? The LRM would not be in arc though. EDIT: same thing at 30:00 the Phoenix Hawk should be able to Torso twist to his right and use the large laser on his right arm to fire behind him.

The guy on the far side needs to learn your TMM in Battletech is based on hexes moved, not MPs spent. Also, when the cameraman was -2 movement, it effects your base/walk speed, them your run speed is readjusted to +50% of your current walk speed. So he should have been 4/6, not 4/7. Also, the cameraman was at 17 heat I think at one point, didn't roll for shutdown, walked the next turn, and somehow dropped to 0 heat with only 10 heat sinks, unless I missed a turn in there somewhere. Other than that, fun little match of a game you guys obviously don't play often. Thank you for sharing. 😊

Im finding the tactics of that griffon highly questionable, like you were setting up to show off certain things like hand to hand combat and rear shots.
