Social distraction and life. In a reality that's flooded with fake news, identities and false realities, design ethicist James Williams argues that we need to redefine the way we use social media if we want to be more, well, social. James Williams is a design ethicist and a co-founder of the Time Well Spent campaign, an effort that aims to evolve the design ethos of digital technologies to help them be more respectful of our time and attention, and more supportive of our deeper human values and goals. He is currently completing doctoral research at the University of Oxford, where he is focused on questions of attention and persuasion in technology design. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I think James Williams is right to sound the alarm, highlighting the critical danger that we're in as human beings. I hope we can find a way to wake up before humanity completely succumbs to the control of the attention economy....scary to think there have been fewer than 2000 viewers to-date.

Johann Harri mentioned him in the book "Stolen focus," so I read James's book and watched his video. Time and attention are well consumed. 16 days in a row and screen time is less than 30 minutes, Attention regained❤

I'd like to see some data to back up this hypothesis. Not because I think it's wrong, but because it seems too convenient to me.

Attention hacking by media companies only works when a person’s will is desiring distraction. Desiring distraction is the essence of addiction, and addiction is a strategy to avoid feeling uncomfortable emotions. Facing the heart rending traumas that result in addictive behavior is the only truly effective way to address the cause of our self harming behaviors. Normalized addictive behavior helps us to justify our addiction…it is an “addiction slipstream” that pulls us along in paths that result in lives of quiet desperation…pungent with the odors of binge watching tv, tik toks & podcasts. The traumas inflicted upon us while in the womb are the most damaging…and least understood by society at large. The documentary “In Utero” (2015) does a good job explaining our predicament.
